Haaland unlikely to face Crystal Palace but should return at Club World Cup

Erling Haaland is unlikely to be fit for Manchester City’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday, but Pep Guardiola hopes the Norwegian will feature at the FIFA Club World Cup next week.

Haaland has missed City’s last two games – a 2-1 Premier League win over Luton Town and a 3-2 UEFA Champions League victory against Red Star Belgrade – with a foot injury.

City welcome Palace to the Etihad Stadium for their final Premier League game before Christmas on Saturday, before jetting off to Saudi Arabia to take part in the Club World Cup for the first time.

Guardiola’s treble winners will face Mexican side Leon or Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds in a semi-final in Jeddah on Tuesday, with a potential final to come three days later.

Quizzed on Haaland’s condition at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Guardiola said: “He will arrive today and we’ll see. The doctors will see him, and we’ll see how he feels. He’s had treatment away.

“Hopefully he can travel to Saudi, he can arrive tomorrow after the game and travel with us. Afterwards, we’ll see if he’s able to play the first game or just the second game.”

Asked whether there was any chance of Haaland featuring against the Eagles, Guardiola added: “I don’t think so. Maybe the doctors will tell me something surprising, but I don’t think so.”

Guardiola then played down fears that the injury could have any form of long-term impact on Haaland, who has 19 goals in 22 appearances for City across all competitions this season.

“It’s not structural, it’s just a stress [fracture],” Guardiola said. “Sometimes players recover from those quicker, sometimes it’s longer. The doctors say we have to take it day by day, week by week.

“At the moment he doesn’t have pain, he’ll be ready to play again.”

West Indies v England, 3rd T20I – Preview, expected line-ups, how to watch and prediction

The State of Play

England’s white-ball misery continued in the 2nd T20I, the West Indies winning by 10 runs. Jos Buttler’s men have now lost 10 of their last 14 limited-overs games in what continues to be a remarkable fall from grace having relinquished their ODI World Cup crown so meekly in India.

England’s woes are typified by their captain, who looks hopelessly out of form – Buttler has passed 50 just once in his last 17 white-ball contests. The team have missed his big hitting in particular in the Caribbean with England’s push-and-run tactics making them look powder-puff compared to their powerful hosts.

Manchester United would take a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool, says Michael Owen

In contrast to England’s obvious troubles, the Windies look a good side, particularly on home pitches. There’s nothing subtle about their batting approach. Hit it and whack it is the order of the day; not a bad philosophy in T20. Their bowling line-up does offer variety and subtlety, though, particularly through spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie.

England have an awful lot of work to do to get back into the series. Two down with three to play, it’s win or bust in Grenada.

Team News

England’s sole change for the 2nd T20I – bringing back Moeen Ali for Ben Duckett – didn’t really work, albeit the veteran all-rounder performed better with the ball than poor Sam Curran, whose two overs went for 38. Curran did respond with a half century with the bat but there remains more questions than answers for England.

The Windies have no need to make changes, and will look to wrap up the series up before it moves on to Trinidad.

Expected Line-ups

West Indies: King, Mayers, Hope, Pooran (wk), Powell (c), Hetmyer, Russell, Holder, Hosein, Motie, Joseph

England: Salt, Buttler (c, wk), Jacks, Brook, Livingstone, Curran, Ali, Woakes, Ahmed, Rashid, Mills

What they said

West Indies captain Rovman Powell on his team’s muscular approach
“The world knows that we, as Caribbean batters, are power-hitters.
“We try and keep working on our game to see if we can be a touch better than the world in terms of power. Because they are a lot better than us at getting singles and that.”

England coach Matthew Mott on the 2nd T20I defeat
“We played good cricket again for 90% of the match. We will try to come up with more solutions. We are trying hard, we are close, and today we were a couple of good hits away from a win. They have just executed a bit better than us in the last two games.”

When and how to watch

The 3rd T20I takes place on Saturday in Grenada at 1730 (UK time). You can watch it on TNT Sports with the programme starting at 1700.

Prediction

England look totally bereft of form and confidence. It’s hard to see anything other than another Windies win and an early series triumph. England have the players and the ability but the hosts have the momentum.

PDC World Darts Championship, Day Two – Preview, how to watch, order of play and predictions

The Main Event

The first Saturday at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship is headlined by a two-time winner as Gary Anderson looks to kickstart his bid for a first title since 2016.

Scottish legend Anderson, who has reached five PDC World Championship finals and clinched back-to-back triumphs in 2015 and 2016, fell in the third round of the tournament to Chris Dobey last year.

Having been written off by many after that defeat, the Flying Scotsman has enjoyed a resurgent 2023, winning a hat-trick of Players Championship titles before making the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam of Darts last month.

Once there, Anderson pushed eventual champion Luke Humphries closer than anyone else in the knockouts, losing a classic encounter 16-14 after building leads of 5-1 and 8-4.

Anderson admitted his age and declining mental stamina played a part in that loss, and that has to be a concern ahead of this three-week tournament, but few players boast his combination of strong recent form and experience on the biggest stage.

The 52-year-old will certainly fancy his chances of a deep run, and PDC president Barry Hearn thinks he has at least an outside chance of going all the way.

“Gary’s come from nowhere. He’s got a fishing lake, he leads a nice life,” Hearn said. “These last six months, he’s really discovered his love of darts, and he has the stage experience.

“He’s a strange type of competitor as far as he gives the impression that he doesn’t really care.

“There’s nothing quite like that rush of adrenaline when you’re competing at the sharp end. I think he’s rediscovered that recently. He won two Pro Tour events in a short space of time recently.”

Anderson will face the winner of Friday’s meeting between Simon Whitlock and Paolo Nebrida in his second-round contest, and should he progress through the bracket, Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright and James Wade could lie in wait in a stacked quarter two.

In the afternoon session, 2021 semi-finalist and this year’s 11th seed Dave Chisnall will face Cameron Menzies or Rusty-Jake Rodriguez for a place in the third round, having been tipped for a strong run after capturing five ranking titles this year.

Order of Play

Afternoon session (from 12:30)

Lee Evans v Sandro Eric Sosing (round one)

Connor Scutt v Krzysztof Kciuk (round one)

Jules van Dongen v Darren Penhall (round one)

Dave Chisnall v Cameron Menzies or Rusty-Jake Rodriguez (round two)

Evening session (from 19:00)

Jamie Hughes v David Cameron (round one)

Keane Barry v Reynaldo Rivera (round one)

Scott Williams v Haruki Muramatsu (round one)

Gary Anderson v Simon Whitlock or Paolo Nebrida (round two)

How to watch

The PDC World Championship is being screened on Sky Sports in the UK. Saturday’s action from Alexandra Palace will be shown on Sky Sports Arena from 12:30, with Sky Sports Main Event also carrying the evening session from 20:30 onwards.

Predictions

Evans, Van Dongen and Scutt will all be considered big favourites to advance in the afternoon session, with the latter of that trio looking to tee up a meeting with 2021 champion Price in the next round.

Barry will fancy his chances of setting up a clash with Michael van Gerwen when he takes on Rivera, then it’ll be all eyes on a legend of the sport as Anderson steps up to the oche.

Anderson could have a battle on his hands if world number 43 Whitlock is his first opponent, but we’re backing him to please the Ally Pally crowd on his way to round three.

UK hotspots for new businesses in 2023 revealed

Manchester is one of the top UK cities for start-up businesses in 2023.

In spite of the cost-of-living crisis affecting families and businesses, the tenacity of entrepreneurs across the UK has proved that there still very much has an appetite for new enterprises this year.

From home-grown ventures to side hustle start-ups, mumpreneurs to Dragon’s Den, there’s no doubt that we’re a nation of entrepreneurism – and this trend looks set to continue.

New research by BusinessFinancing.co.uk found that several UK locations have seen a boom in new businesses over the past 12 months.

Almost half a million new businesses launched around the UK during 2023 – despite the aftermath of the pandemic and ongoing concerns around the cost of living.

The new data shows that some towns, cities and regions in particular are benefiting from a sharp rise in entrepreneurial activity.

Gloucester, Manchester and Cambridge have seen the most new businesses launch per capita this year, with both cities even outperforming new businesses in London as hubs of entrepreneurism.

Increase in new business activity

All three locations are experiencing a significant increase of new business activity compared with 2022.

Gloucester has seen the launch of new businesses increase by 27.48% to 5,682 in 2023 compared to the previous year, Manchester has seen a year-on-year increase in new businesses of 33.82% to 21,099, while Cambridge has seen new businesses rise by a staggering 45.9% year-on-year to 3,999.

Experts at businessfinancing.co.uk looked at records posted on Companies House for newly-registered businesses since January 1, then analysed location data and local population size to determine their findings.

Ian Wright, finance expert at BusinessFinancing.co.uk, said: “The research clearly shows that UK towns and cities have an appetite for enterprise, even amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

“Entrepreneurs up and down the country are showing their willingness to invest their time and energy in bringing their business visions to life.”

Oldham teenager ‘missing for six years’ found in France

0

Oldham teenager Alex Batty, who had been missing for six years after a holiday abroad, has been found in France.

Authorities in Toulouse reported that Alex is currently at a young person’s centre and may return to the UK soon.

The breakthrough occurred when Alex used a concerned motorist’s phone to send a facebook message to his grandmother in the UK, expressing his desire to come home.

Alex had been missing since 2017 when he went on a holiday with his mother Melanie Batty, 38, who does not have legal parental guardianship, and his grandfather David Batty, 59, on a pre-agreed trip when he was 11.

He flew with them to Malaga Airport for a week near Marbella. However, the family did not return to England as expected in October 2017.

The pair are yet to be found and are wanted in connection with his disappearance.

According to a police source, the concerned motorist, identified as delivery driver Fabien Accidini, spotted Alex walking through the rain near Toulouse, and took him to a police station.

Mr Accidini shared that Alex had been walking for four days, starting from a location in the mountains, though the specific details remained undisclosed.

When he looked Alex up online and said that he had been reported missing he reached out for assistance.

The teenager’s plan had been to reach a major city with an embassy for assistance, but instead, Mr. Accidini’s intervention led to the involvement of French authorities in facilitating his return.

Despite international public appeals, Alex’s legal guardian – his grandmother Susan Caruana – has not seen him since he left the UK.

How to Choose the Perfect Kitchen Splashback

0

When it comes to kitchen renovations, the devil is in the details. A seemingly small element like a splashback can make or break your kitchen’s aesthetic and functionality.

If you’re in the process of selecting a kitchen splashback, you’re in the right place.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to consider, including size, shape, design, material, and colour.

So, to ensure you choose a splashback that not only meets your practical needs but also enhances the beauty and style of your kitchen, read on!

A Perfect Fit

Your kitchen splashback needs to fit perfectly. It’s not just about covering the area behind your stove or sink; it’s about creating a visual balance.

A splashback that’s too small in comparison to its surroundings can look out of place, whilst one that’s too large might overwhelm the space. Measure carefully and consider the proportions of your kitchen.

Kitchen Splashbacks in a Range of Shapes

The shape of your kitchen splashback can add a lot of character to the room.

Whilst rectangular splashbacks are undoubtedly timeless, why not think outside the box?

A curved or irregular-shaped splashback can add a touch of modernity and uniqueness to your kitchen.

Contemporary Kitchen Design

The role of your kitchen splashback extends far beyond its practical purpose of protecting walls from splashes and spills. It’s a vital element in the overall design aesthetic of your space.

Put some thought into your choice of kitchen splashback, ensuring it reflects the theme and overall style of the room. You could choose a splashback that complements and enhances the existing design elements, or one that stands out as a focal point, adding personality and flair to the space.

For a rustic theme, a kitchen splashback with natural tones or a textured appearance can add warmth and charm. Materials or designs that evoke a sense of the countryside or traditional craftsmanship, with a handcrafted look or earthy colours, can enhance the rustic feel.

For a more contemporary kitchen design, you might opt for a minimalistic splashback with clean, sleek lines. Consider using bold, solid colours or high gloss finishes that reflect light and create a sense of openness.

Alternatively, your splashback can serve as a statement piece, especially in kitchens where the rest of the décor is understated. Glass splashbacks featuring mirrored or glittered finishescould be the perfect fit here. You could also consider adding a pop of colour, an intriguing pattern, or a unique texture that draws the eye and adds a personal touch to your kitchen.

Choosing a Material for Kitchen Splashbacks

When selecting a kitchen splashback, the material you choose plays a crucial role in both functionality and aesthetics.

Traditional options like tiles, stainless steel, and acrylic each bring their own benefits. For example, tiles offer a classic look with a variety of patterns and colours, stainless steel brings a professional, sleek edge to the kitchen, and acrylic provides a cost-effective yet modern appearance.

However, glass splashbacks are currently trending in the world of contemporary kitchen design, and there are many reasons for their increase in popularity.

Glass splashbacks are not just about contemporary style; they bring a host of practical advantages.

Firstly, they are incredibly easy to clean – a simple wipe-down is all it takes to keep them looking pristine.

In terms of durability, glass splashbacks stand out, being resistant to heat and everyday wear and tear. This makes them a long-lasting addition to any kitchen.

Additionally, glass has a unique ability to reflect light. This can be a game-changer in kitchen design, especially in smaller spaces. A glass splashback can make your kitchen appear brighter and more spacious, creating an inviting atmosphere. The reflective quality of glass adds a dimension of depth and openness that other materials simply can’t match.

Wide Range of Glass Splashbacks

Look no further than Express Glass Warehouse for an extensive range of stylish and unusual glass splashbacks, perfect for any modern kitchen design.

They also provide a free colour matching service, ensuring you get the perfect match for your kitchen’s design, whether it’s a Dulux, RAL, Farrow & Ball, Laura Ashley, or Pantone colour. And if that wasn’t enough, they can add a bit of sparkle with glitter options too!

Don’t hesitate to reach out to their dedicated team by calling 0208 500 1188 if you have any questions. They will also be happy to help if you need a glass splashback in a custom size.

Haaland goes up against Mbappe and Messi for FIFA award

Erling Haaland has been nominated alongside Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi for The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award 2023.

The Manchester City striker enjoyed a prolific first season in England, netting 52 goals in all competitions as Pep Guardiola’s men claimed the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble.

He also won the European Golden Shoe, the English Premier League Golden Boot, and the rare double of being named English Premier League Player and Young Player of the season.

Not all 52 goals will count towards the award, however, with the eligible period for assessment not starting until after the World Cup final on December 18 and running to August 20.

That August date is significant as that was the day Messi led Inter Miami to their first piece of silverware, the Leagues Cup, with a penalty shoot-out win over Nashville. Prior to that the Argentina captain had played a diminishing role as Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 title.

As Messi’s influence in the French capital waned, Mbappe’s grew.

The Ligue 1 Player of the Year scored 17 times over the last 20 league games to get PSG over the line.

The women’s nominations are led by Spanish duo Aitana Bonmati and Jenni Hermoso with Colombia’s Linda Caicedo also in the mix.

Bonmati is the overwhelming favourite after playing a prominent role in Spain’s World Cup triumph in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Barcelona’s domestic and continental treble.

Individually, over the period August 2022-August 2023 (different to the men), she also won the Women’s World Cup Golden Ball, UEFA Women’s Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or.

Former Barcelona star Hermoso, who now plays for Mexican side Pachuca, was another stand-out for Spain, albeit her tournament was tarnished by the Luis Rubiales scandal that followed that triumph.

Caicedo, 18, is one of the women’s game’s growing stars.

She played in three World Cups in the space of a year, winning awards at both the U-17 and senior finals, and scooped the Copa America Femenina Golden Ball in between.

Pioneering the Future of Waste Management with AI

0

Reliable Skip, a leading skip hire company covering Manchester, is boldly embracing the future with a visionary £100,000 investment in artificial intelligence (AI). This strategic move aims to enhance business efficiency and address the escalating costs and environmental challenges in waste management.

A Legacy of Innovation at Reliable Skip

Since its inception, Reliable Skip has been a key player in Manchester’s waste management sector, earning a reputation for reliability and customer-centric service. The company’s consistent pursuit of innovative solutions has established it as a leader not just in efficiency but also in environmental stewardship, making it a preferred choice for both residential and commercial clients.

The Rising Costs and Environmental Challenges of Waste Management

The waste management industry is grappling with increasing operational costs and the need for sustainable practices. In urban areas like Manchester, costs related to waste disposal are steadily climbing, driven by higher landfill taxes, strict environmental regulations, and the complexities of waste sorting and recycling. Additionally, the environmental impacts of waste mismanagement have become an urgent issue, necessitating innovative approaches for reducing carbon footprints and promoting responsible waste disposal.

Artificial Intelligence: Transforming Waste Management

Artificial intelligence is revolutionising waste management by automating operations and improving recycling processes. AI solutions are essential in reducing operational costs and environmental impact. Their integration enables companies to optimise waste collection routes, decrease energy consumption, and enhance waste sorting efficiency, leading to greener and more cost-effective operations.

Embracing AI for a Sustainable Future in Waste Management

Reliable Skip’s £100,000 investment in AI is a testament to their commitment to future-proofing their operations. The AI technologies being integrated are diverse, encompassing machine learning algorithms and sophisticated automation software. These innovations are targeted to streamline several aspects of waste management, from customer interactions to operational logistics.

Machine learning algorithms are being employed to predict waste collection volumes and timings, enabling more efficient route planning for collection trucks. This not only reduces fuel consumption and emissions but also maximises the use of available resources. Additionally, automation software is being introduced to enhance the sorting process, ensuring more effective recycling and reducing the volume of waste directed to landfills.

This strategic integration of AI is expected to significantly reduce operational costs for Reliable Skip. More importantly, it sets a new standard in the industry for environmental responsibility. By reducing emissions and improving recycling rates, Reliable Skip is not only cutting costs but also contributing positively to Manchester’s environmental sustainability goals.

The move is a forward-thinking example for others in the industry, showcasing how technology can be a powerful tool in addressing both economic and environmental challenges in waste management.

Harnessing AI to Tackle Rising Costs and Enhance Eco-Efficiency

This foray into AI isn’t just about keeping up with technology; it’s a strategic response to the twin challenges of rising operational costs and environmental responsibility in waste management. The expected benefits of this substantial AI integration are multifaceted, promising significant improvements in both financial and ecological aspects of their operations.

Financially, the AI-driven enhancements are poised to streamline operations, leading to substantial cost savings. By optimising collection routes and schedules through AI algorithms, Reliable Skip aims to reduce fuel consumption, a major cost factor in skip hire. Additionally, AI-enabled sorting technologies promise to increase recycling efficiency, thereby decreasing the reliance on costly landfill disposal.

Ecologically, the impact of these AI systems could be profound. More efficient routing reduces the carbon footprint of collection vehicles, an essential step towards greener operations. Enhanced sorting technologies mean not only less waste going to landfills but also better quality recycling, contributing to a more circular economy. By reducing landfill use, Reliable Skip is directly addressing one of the most pressing environmental issues in waste management.

These anticipated benefits underscore Reliable Skip’s commitment to leading the industry not just in economic efficiency, but also in environmental stewardship. The implementation of AI in their operations is a bold step towards a more sustainable and cost-effective future in waste management, setting an example for others in the sector to follow.

Navigating the Challenges and Ethical Considerations of AI Integration

While the integration of AI into waste management heralds a new era of efficiency and sustainability, it also brings its own set of challenges and ethical considerations. Reliable Skip is navigating these complexities with a keen awareness of their implications.

One of the primary challenges lies in seamlessly integrating AI systems into existing operational frameworks. This requires not just technical adjustments, but also a cultural shift within the organisation. Employees need to be trained to work alongside AI-driven tools, which involves both technical upskilling and adapting to new operational dynamics.

Additionally, there are ethical considerations to be addressed, particularly concerning data privacy and job displacement. Reliable is committed to ensuring that the data collected through AI systems for operational purposes is handled with the utmost respect for privacy and security. They are taking proactive measures to safeguard against any potential misuse of customer or company data.

As for workforce implications, while AI can automate certain processes, the skip hire company recognises the invaluable role of its human workforce across Manchester and the rest of the UK. They are focusing on retraining and redeploying employees to new roles that arise as a result of AI integration, rather than replacing them. This approach not only helps in retaining valuable experienced staff but also ensures a smooth transition to more AI-centric operations.

Navigating these challenges requires a balanced approach, blending technological advancements with ethical responsibility and workforce welfare. Reliable Skip’s commitment to this balance demonstrates their dedication to not just adopting AI, but doing so in a way that aligns with their core values and respects the needs of all stakeholders involved.

Industry Perspectives: AI as a Benchmark in Waste Management

The initiative taken by Reliable Skip to invest in AI technology has garnered attention and sparked discussions among industry experts and analysts. Many view this move as a benchmark for innovation and sustainability in the waste management sector.

Industry analysts highlight how the investment aligns with global trends where businesses are increasingly leveraging AI for operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. This integration of AI in waste management is seen as a forward-thinking approach that could set new standards in the industry.

Experts also draw comparisons with similar AI-driven initiatives in other sectors, noting the potential for widespread transformation. The use of AI in waste management is not just about operational efficiency; it represents a broader shift towards more responsible and sustainable business practices.

Moreover, this approach is praised for its potential to inspire other companies within the industry. Their investment serves as a case study for how AI can be effectively utilised to address both economic and environmental challenges in waste management.

This industry-wide recognition underscores the significance of Reliable Skip’s investment. By taking a lead in adopting AI, they are not only positioning themselves for future success but also influencing the trajectory of the entire waste management sector towards more sustainable and efficient practices.
