Premier League clubs have voted to implement tougher restrictions on associated party transactions, with Manchester City reportedly threatening legal action against the competition over the changes.

Transactions and sponsorship deals between Premier League clubs and associated parties have come under the spotlight in recent months.

The debate has partly been driven by fears that Newcastle United – who are owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) – could do business on favourable terms with Saudi Pro League clubs controlled by the PIF.

Clubs failed to vote in a ban on loan deals between associated clubs ahead of the January transfer window, with City, Burnley, Chelsea, Everton, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and Wolves joining Newcastle in voting against the proposal.

City are the flagship club of the City Football Group, and debates around multi-club ownership models have resurfaced this week after the Premier League champions reportedly agreed a deal to sign Brazilian wonderkid Savio.

The winger is contracted to Ligue 2 side Troyes but has excelled on loan at Girona this season. Both clubs are part of the City Football Group and the Premier League is set to investigate the deal.

In a statement released on Friday, the Premier League said: “Following a full review of the existing Associated Party Transactions Rules and Fair Market Value assessment protocols, clubs agreed to a series of amendments to further enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the system.”

The Premier League also reiterated its commitment to agreeing a new financial settlement with the English Football League [EFL], as well as saying positive talks had taken place regarding a new set of financial rules and revealing the details of an Environmental Sustainability Commitment agreed by clubs.

Widespread reports then claimed Premier League chief executive Richard Masters had informed clubs that one member was threatening legal action over the changes to associated party transaction rules.

That club is believed to be City, who are also being investigated over 115 alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules across a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

Everton had already been deducted 10 points after being found guilty of breaching the competition’s Profit and Sustainability Rules before joining Nottingham Forest in being charged with another separate breach. The outcomes of those cases are set to be revealed in mid-April.

Masters recently revealed that a date for a hearing on City’s alleged breaches has been set, though he declined to say when it will take place.

Brothers sentenced for selling counterfeit homeware in Cheetham Hill

Mohammed Jamshid Ayoubi (50) of Westbourne Road, Eccles, and Mohammed Tamim Ayoubi (42) of Windsor Avenue, Whitefield, pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates Court last May, to the acquisition of criminal property and distributing articles infringing trademarks.

At Manchester Crown Court on February 2, Mohammed Jamshid Ayoubi was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and must complete 180 hours of unpaid work.

Mohammed Tamim Ayoubi was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and must complete 180 hours of unpaid work.

Counterfeit goods

Fraudulent designer homeware, including picture frames, blankets and rugs, worth an estimated loss to the industry of £827,000, were seized by officers from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) at the City of London Police, during a raid of the shop in November 2021.

Confiscation proceedings will now begin to recover the money that the two men earned by selling counterfeit goods.

Detective constable Daryl Fryatt, from the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) at the City of London Police, said: “Counterfeiting is often a gateway to other forms of criminality like drugs supply, money laundering and human trafficking, causing real harm to the communities where these shops are based.

“Mohammed Jamshid and his brother Mohammed Tamim Ayoubi sold low-quality imitations of designer products. Like many counterfeit goods, their stock was made with cheap materials, meaning it was prone to faster damage and needed to be replaced more often than legitimate products.

“It’s vital to remember that buying counterfeit goods can have significant consequences – and selling them can land you with a criminal record, as this case shows.”

Tolo Décor Ltd

Mohammed Jamshid Ayoubi was the director of Tolo Décor Ltd, which sold both unbranded and counterfeit homeware from two adjoining units, Tolo and Best Deals on Derby Street, Manchester. A wall that separated the two premises had been knocked through to create a larger sales floor.

He employed Mohammed Tamim Ayoubi, who worked on the shop floor, where customers could buy sets of counterfeit designer towels for £20 and sets of counterfeit placemats for £25.

PIPCU officers raided Tolo and Best Deals on 30 November 2021. They seized 4,342 counterfeit items, worth an estimated £827,000 in losses to the industry, from a stockroom at the back of the shop and arrested Mohammed Tamim and Mohammed Jamshid Ayoubi.

Both men’s mobile phones and a laptop seized from Tolo contained conversations with a number of clients where it was apparent that counterfeit items were being sold from the shop.

Cheetham Hill

Miles Rees, deputy director of Intellectual Property Enforcement at the Intellectual Property Office, said: “Criminals are seeking to exploit consumers and communities for their own financial gain by targeting them with illegal counterfeit products – with little or no regard for their quality or safety.

“This is anything but a victimless crime. Overall, it is estimated that the sale of counterfeit goods contributes to more than 80,000 job losses in the UK each year, diverting funds away from legitimate businesses and into the hands of criminals. This helps to sustain criminal lifestyles, as well as causing genuine harms to the workers often exploited during their production.

“We welcome the ongoing action to disrupt this criminal activity in the Cheetham Hill area, as we continue working with our partners in industry and law enforcement to help protect the public and raise awareness of the damage counterfeits cause”.

Their promise was neatly captured last weekend with the three sitting arm in arm on an advertising board at Old Trafford after Garnacho scored in the 3-0 win over West Ham.

Ten Hag is aware of their capabilities but wants to see it every week.

He told Sky Sports: “We have some very high potentials in this squad. And now we have to perform to high levels.

“We do it now in some games but on Sunday, for instance, we get an opposition who have a very high level. So that’s a challenge to perform there and to get an end product from those players on Sunday. So they are the next steps, which have to come.”

Ten Hag has been encouraged at the way the trio have worked together, and also how the more experienced players have enhanced their development.

He added: “They [the youngsters] bring energy.

“I think it’s always a combination of experience and high potentials. And when they respect each other, and they want to strengthen each other, then you have a team and that is always the objective because every player knows when there is a team you can achieve higher performances and higher levels and so achieve more.”

The big frustration for Ten Hag this season has been a persistent injury list that was added to last weekend when Argentina World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez suffered a knee injury that will keep him out for at least two months.

“It stops the progress” said the Dutchman.

“Every time you have to adjust you don’t have routines, you don’t have partnerships and that is what we have seen.

“I think we have had nine different set-ups in the centre-half positions. In other positions we have to swap a lot and that was forced by injuries so we hope now we can keep a consistent team.”

Yousaf Ahmed (24) of Plaza Boulevard, Liverpool has been charged in connection with the murder of Sadiq Al-lami (pictured).

Mr Ahmed has been remanded in custody ahead of a schedule appearance at Stockport Magistrates today.

Abdul Wahab Babar (18) of Ashdale Drive; Sikander Babar (24) of Ashdale Drive; Noraiz Kamal (18) of Highbank Drive; and Sultan Bakr (22) of Hyde Road, have all been charged with murder and remain in custody.

Sadiq (30) died in the early hours of January 23 following an incident at the junction near Parrs Wood on the A34 Kingsway in Didsbury.

A murder investigation was launched by Greater Manchester Police.

GMP’s Major Incident Team still want to hear from anyone who believes they may have CCTV or dashcam footage or who witnessed anything which could assist officers with their investigation by calling 101 and quoting log 166 of 23/01/2024.

Line-up revealed for 2024 Rochdale Borough Festival of Ideas

The line-up has been revealed for the new Rochdale Borough Festival of Ideas, which is being staged from March 4 – 9.

Around the themes of imagine, create and discover; visitors to the free festival will be able to experience more than 20 events, including visual arts, music, live performances, thought-provoking talks, interactive installations and more, as originality and imagination are celebrated.

The festival opens in eye-catching style on Monday evening with a bold and colourful light show at Rochdale Town Hall to mark its re-opening.

The light show will be set to a new soundtrack created especially for the event and afterwards visitors will be able to explore the building and be among the first members of the public through the doors of the re-born Victorian Gothic Grade I-listed masterpiece.

During the festival the world famous Black Dyke Brass Band will be performing two special evening concerts at Rochdale Town Hall.

In a mass act of celebration of young people’s ideas, the festival is working with 1,850 school children to generate 10,000 brilliant ideas. Embracing creative thinking, every one of the ideas will nurture ingenuity and innovation with hands-on workshops led by local artists before all the ideas will be displayed as part of one giant sculpture on display at Rochdale Town Hall that will be available to view.

The festival will also see a world premiere of a stunning outdoor installation – ‘The Living Dress,’ a large-scale naturally-dyed, handmade dress worn by a beautiful huge five-metre high sculpture. Using sustainable dyeing processes, the dress will be made with the help of local women using a hybrid of ancient techniques and modern practices.

Fluid Motion Theatre will present their performance installation in four locations across the borough. ‘Take Ten’ invites you to relax and take a moment on colourful swing chairs, guided by a soundtrack that encourages you to sit comfortably, swing gently and breathe deeply. The ground-breaking artistic performance is created in collaboration with Lorna Rees of Gobbledegook Theatre, around the idea of mental wellbeing, underpinned by the ‘Five steps to mental wellbeing.’

Muslim Hikers, the largest community in the world for Muslims interested in the outdoors, will be holding a Beginners’ Hike, aiming to improve the diversity in rural spaces, while tackling loneliness and connecting communities. Trained guides will lead you on a gentle hike through some of the borough’s beauty spots, connecting you to each other and the surrounding green spaces.

Power Up – a fast-paced and engaging event where you can try your hand at an exciting range of ESports games will be hosted in partnership with Hopwood Hall College, while Move Manchester will presents ‘Zugzwang’ – a dynamic dance performance (pictured) set on a giant chess board.

Last year festival organisers asked local artists and groups to submit their ideas, with five selected. These ideas have been commissioned in partnership with The Culture Co-op, Rochdale borough’s Creative People and Places Programme, funded by Arts Council England.

Manchester Airport and Timpson as well as Bethell Construction, SSP, the Manchester United Foundation, Amazon and others.

The event was jointly organised with business charity BW3, which was founded more than 20 years ago to connect companies wanting to support the economic and social wellbeing of Wythenshawe.

Manchester Airport talked to people at the event about the range of apprenticeships it runs, including in corporate social responsibility and engineering.

MP Mike Kane said: “Taking the first steps on your career – or even changing direction when
you’ve already started out – can be really daunting. But here in Wythenshawe and the surrounding area we’re lucky to have a whole range of employers offering innovative apprenticeships.

“That’s why I take great pride in hosting this annual apprenticeship fair in partnership with Manchester City Council and BW3 – because it brings these organisations and the people who could benefit from the opportunities they offer together.

“So whether you’re an aspiring engineer who wants to work at one of the country’s biggest airports here in Manchester or you want to learn about the business of football through the Manchester United Foundation, you can find the right Apprenticeship for you.

“I’m grateful to Manchester Airport and Timson for helping make this event a success, and to all the exhibitors and people who attended today.”
