SMEs can bid for a share of £6.4 million to train workforce in AI

0

From today, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can bid for a share of £6.4 million to help train their workforce to use artificial intelligence (AI).

Sectors set to benefit include law, accountancy, scientific research and human resources, with the government making up to £10,000 available for each business so they can boost productivity and efficiency.

SMEs in these areas will be able to tap into the power of AI to streamline tasks, boost productivity, and drive growth.

This could include accountants using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT to draft documents, develop new software which could help to tackle fraud, and legal professionals harnessing the power of AI to analyse lengthy documents such as contracts, freeing up time to focus on other critical areas.

By adopting AI technologies, SMEs will be able to improve productivity and drive down costs, and devote more time to identifying new areas of growth which will deliver new and improved services for consumers.

Expected to support around 2,000 SMEs across the country, businesses employing under 250 staff can now apply for the support, which will see successful applicants reimbursed for up to 50% of the cost of investment in AI skills training.

The move is to future-proof these businesses and incentivise investment in AI skills to ensure they retain a competitive edge through increased productivity and reduced costs, as they begin to integrate AI into their operations – building a pool of technological talent alongside supporting employee growth and development.

Whilst human supervision, judgement, creativity and empathy remain vital requirements in the workplace, augmenting AI into monotonous tasks like inputting data and filling out paperwork can increase speed and efficiency and play a major part in increasing business productivity.

Delivered through the UK Government’s Flexible AI Upskilling Fund, the pilot launched today will support SMEs in the Professional and Business Services (PBS) sector, with SMEs encouraged to apply between now and May 31 for grant funding to deliver training before March 2025.

Businesses specialising in professional services such as law, accounting and market research, alongside those providing business services such as HR, administration and leasing consumer goods are already seeing some of the benefits AI can bring to their day-to-day operations. This includes analysing large volumes of text, answering customer service queries and generating images and text for a variety of applications, including advertising campaigns, contracts and blog posts.

AI is also having a huge impact in specialised areas like drafting legal documents for law firms and creating virtual renderings for architects.

While smaller enterprises often acknowledge the benefits AI can bring to business operations, many require support when it comes to identifying the training employees should undertake to suit business needs.

The AI Skills for Business Framework, also launching today, will help businesses to grip the huge opportunities AI has to offer, driving innovation and future-proofing their workforce.

Technology secretary Michelle Donelan said: “Businesses of all sizes and across all sectors, from architecture to law and HR to advertising, are identifying the huge benefits that AI can bring in helping staff boost their productivity while cutting business costs.

“I have launched this new pilot to help SMEs interested in AI adoption make it a reality by contributing towards the cost of upskilling their employees – ultimately increasing efficiency so companies can retain a competitive edge in an increasingly digital world.”

Manchester United: Fernandes drops bombshell over his future

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has hinted he will consider his future at Old Trafford after Euro 2024.

The Portugal international has been one of United’s better performers this season with 15 goals and 11 assists in 45 appearances in all competitions.

However, the team’s wildly inconsistent displays under Erik ten Hag has led to speculation there will be a firesale this summer, particularly with new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos Group in control of the playing side.

Reports have suggested United would consider the sale of all but three players – Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund – but it would still require a major offer to prise Fernandes away.

Speaking to DAZN Portugal, the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder said: “I’m not thinking about other things at the moment.

“Obviously, it doesn’t just depend on me, does it? A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides.”

United are sixth in the Premier League and chasing a Europa League spot. They also face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25.

Fernandes added: “I’m not thinking too much about the future, not least because, obviously, this season hasn’t been at the level I’d hoped for, either individually or collectively, so far.

“We could still end the season by winning the [FA] Cup. After that, we have a very important Euros coming up.

“So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it won’t be until after the Euros because nothing will be able to take my focus away from the FA Cup final and the Euros, as there’s nothing more important than that at the moment.”

Rafael Nadal ‘didn’t want to cry’ in Madrid Open 2024 defeat… as tennis great says he is ‘super-happy’ with fitness

Rafael Nadal said he was “super-happy” with his fitness but could not have “important dreams” after his last ever Madrid Open appearance ended in a 7-5 6-4 defeat to Czech world number 31 Jiri Lehecka.

Former world number one Nadal – the most successful player in the history of the Madrid Open, with five titles – is expected to retire in 2024, having been plagued by injuries.

The Spaniard has had his best run of matches since a brief return from a long-term lay-off in January, winning three times at his home tournament and taking on Lehecka 24 hours after a three-set win over Pedro Cachin which tested his conditioning across more than three hours.

“It’s always emotional, playing here at home,” the 37-year-old told Tennis TV. “Having all the crowd giving me their last support has been unforgettable – a moment that will stay with me forever.

“This week has been very positive, with a lot of positive energy for what’s coming. I will never have the chance to thank everybody here enough.”

Nadal’s wife and parents were in the crowd who watched the 22-time grand slam champion receive a video tribute and commemorative trophy.

“I tried not to look at them because I didn’t want to cry,” said Nadal. “It’s not my last match and I’m not retiring yet, I’m just saying goodbye to a very special place for me.

“Things need to keep going and I don’t know when my final match will be. I don’t want to get too emotional because I want to keep going for a while.

“Yesterday’s match had been too long for me and my opponent played unbelievably. His serve was huge, which makes returns even more impossible in Madrid.

“I had my chances but I’m super-happy with the way my body held up after yesterday. That’s the most important thing for me.”

Rafal Nadal: French Open 2024 ‘exciting’

The focus will now intensify on whether Nadal will play at the French Open, in which he holds a record 14 titles. The 2024 edition starts on May 20.

“Last week I was able to play two matches but this week it was four at a decent level of tennis,” said Nadal, whose form has moved him 207 places up the rankings, to 305th.

“I can’t have any important dreams because I am not in a condition to ask for it. I am excited about the next couple of weeks on the tour.”

Dwight Yorke explains why Kylian Mbappe is ahead of Jude Bellingham in Ballon d’Or race

Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes Kylian Mbappe is ahead of Jude Bellingham in the Ballon d’Or race.

The Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid stars are two of the heavy favourites to win the coveted award after the dominant era of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo ended with the Argentina star winning his eighth trophy in 2023.

Both players now feature outside of Europe, opening the door for new faces to write their names in the history books alongside the very best.

Mbappe and Bellingham have both led their teams to domestic success in the 2023-24 campaign but will have their eyes on biggest prize of them all – the Champions League.

Yorke, who won the competition in 1999, believes the Frenchman has the edge over the England midfielder at the moment, but things could change in the next few months.

He said: “You can’t overlook Jude Bellingham as one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or.

“If he wins the Champions League and continues to score lots of goals, then yeah I can see him winning it.

“But Kylian Mbappe is ahead of him at the moment, he may not win the major competitions but his quality is out of this world.”

The pair could meet in the Champions League final should Madrid beat Bayern Munich and PSG overcome Borussia Dortmund in the penultimate round before facing off at Euro 2024 this summer.

Yorke added: “If PSG and Real Madrid meet in the Champions League final, and one of them wins the game for their club, that player will most likely win the Ballon d’Or.

“We also have to think about the Euros, the next few months will really tell you who deserves it.”

From Classic to Modern: Navigating Men’s Wedding Suit Styles for Your Special Day

0

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, and choosing the right suit is crucial to ensure you look and feel your best. With so many styles, colours, and fabrics to choose from, it can be overwhelming to find the perfect suit for your big day. In this blog post, we will explore how to choose the perfect men’s wedding suit by considering factors such as style, venue, and season.

  1. Style: When it comes to choosing a wedding suit, there are several different styles to consider. Traditional options include classic black tuxedos or three-piece suits, while modern trends lean towards slim-fit suits or even coloured options like navy or grey. Think about your personal style and what will make you feel confident and comfortable on your wedding day. Don’t be afraid to try on different styles and experiment with different looks until you find the one that suits you best.
  2. Venue: The venue of your wedding plays a significant role in determining the style of suit you should wear. For formal venues like ballrooms or upscale hotels, a classic tuxedo may be more appropriate. For outdoor or beach weddings, a lighter fabric like linen or seersucker might be more suitable. Consider the overall vibe of your venue and choose a suit that complements the setting while also reflecting your personal style.
  3. Season: The season in which you are getting married can also influence your choice of wedding suit. For summer weddings, lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen are ideal to keep you cool and comfortable in warmer temperatures. In contrast, winter weddings call for heavier fabrics like wool or tweed to keep you warm during colder weather. Consider the time of year when planning your wedding suit to ensure both style and comfort on your special day.
  4. Accessories: Once you have chosen the perfect men’s wedding suit, don’t forget about accessories that can enhance your overall look. A well-fitted shirt, tie, pocket square, cufflinks, and shoes all play a role in completing your ensemble. Consider coordinating these accessories with your suit colour and style for a polished and cohesive look that ties everything together.
  5. Tailoring: Lastly, don’t underestimate the importance of proper tailoring when it comes to your wedding suit. A well-fitted suit can make all the difference in how you look and feel on your big day. Be sure to work with a skilled tailor who can make necessary adjustments to ensure that your suit fits perfectly and flatters your body shape.

Conclusion: Choosing the perfect mens wedding suits involves careful consideration of factors such as style, venue, season, accessories, and tailoring. By taking into account these key elements when selecting your wedding attire, you can ensure that you look sharp, feel confident, and make a lasting impression on your special day. Remember that ultimately it’s about finding a suit that reflects who you are as a groom while also complementing the overall aesthetic of your wedding celebration.

Exploring the Energy Sources That Will Drive the Future

0

The primary energy source for many countries over the past century has been fossil fuels. These include oil, gas, and coal, which are burned to produce energy. The problem with these energy sources is how damaging they are to the environment, a realisation that is leading many countries to switch to new energy sources. These are either renewable or low-carbon options that have a much lower environmental impact.

Solar

Solar is one of the cleanest and cheapest energy sources. This is because, besides the solar panels and batteries, nothing else is required to produce and store it. You can set up solar panels for homes, schools, and even large industries and not have to think about energy production for at least 25 years.

Solar panels convert the sun’s rays into an electric current that either charges a battery or powers different equipment. This is an oversimplification, of course, but it shows why solar is so versatile as long as you have sun. While this can seem like a huge problem in areas that do not have much of it, we now have solar panels that produce power in all conditions, and the storage density of batteries is getting much better. This means we will need fewer batteries of larger capacities to store power in the future.

Wind

Large wind turbines harness the kinetic energy of wind. These turbines can be placed on land where there is a lot of wind or offshore where they will interrupt wildlife as little as possible.

While humans have been harnessing the power of the wind for centuries for activities like grain grinding, we are still improving how we leverage it to create electricity. We are just starting to leverage larger and taller turbines with more kinetic energy and can harness the wind much better for this purpose.

Even though wind speeds vary globally, the potential for wind energy generation surpasses worldwide demand. If we can learn how to harness more wind energy or invest more resources into it, we can theoretically rely on it for most of our energy production.

Syngas

The impact of burning fossil fuels and using them as an energy source has led to extensive research into low-carbon fuel alternatives that can be used alongside renewable energy sources. In recent years, many companies have become interested in syngas, a synthetic gas that contains hydrogen and sometimes hydrocarbons. Syngas is usually produced through a process known as gasification, which produces a product with impurities. These impurities can damage equipment and cause environmental pollution, so they are removed through a process known as washing. There are several syngas scrubbing processes, including the more popular wet gas scrubbing.

Ocean Energy

While it remains underdeveloped compared to other sources, ocean energy holds tremendous potential if we can harness the kinetic energy of our oceans effectively. That said, numerous prototypes that already harness wave and tidal energy hold a lot of promise and are showing the potential this energy source holds.

With more people realising the devastating effects of burning fossil fuels for energy, many countries are transitioning to cleaner sources of power. It will take some time to transition away from what we have used for the last century, but these new energy sources are much better for the Earth so there isn’t really a choice.

Declan Rice stands by decision to reject Man City for ‘more exciting’ Arsenal move

0

Declan Rice stands by his decision to reject interest from Manchester City when joining Arsenal last year, claiming the Gunners have a “more exciting” project.

Rice was targeted by both City and Arsenal ahead of the 2023-24 season, with Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions reportedly tabling a bid of around £90million to West Ham.

However, Rice ended up joining Arsenal for £105m and has spent his first season at the Emirates Stadium battling City for the title.

Mikel Arteta’s men currently hold a one-point lead at the summit, but with City having an additional game to play, they know a perfect end to the season will seal a fourth successive crown.

Though Rice’s first campaign in north London may end without silverware, he has no regrets over his decision.

“This project seemed more exciting and that’s why I chose to come to Arsenal, because I believe we’re on to big things here,” The Athletic.

Had Rice made a different decision, he would likely have formed a fearsome partnership with Rodri at the base of Guardiola’s midfield.

Excluding penalty shoot-outs, Rodri has gone 70 games for both club and country without defeat, and the Spain international has been touted as a contender for the Premier League’s Player of the Season award – as has Rice.

Rice believes the two have very different styles but is in no doubt about Rodri’s status as the world’s top midfielder, saying: “We’re different players, I feel.

“With Rodri, he was born in Spain, he’s always been a natural number six. You can just tell by the way he plays that he’s worked under Pep for so long. He’s a lot more structured than I am.

“I’d say I’m a lot more off-the-cuff. Obviously, this season I’ve been more structured, but in terms of the way I play, I feel like… being free a little bit more.

“There are different things that we complement each other on — but no doubt, he’s the best in the world.”

Arsenal are in action first as the title race resumes on Saturday, welcoming Bournemouth to the Emirates for the early kick-off, with City hosting Wolves later that day.

Wolff denies Mercedes are set to meet with Verstappen camp

Toto Wolff says there is no truth in reports suggesting he was planning to meet with Max Verstappen’s agents in a bid to lure the Red Bull driver to Mercedes.

Verstappen is still thought to be unhappy at Red Bull following allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards a colleague against team principal Christian Horner.

Horner, who has always denied any wrongdoing, was cleared by an investigation but Verstappen’s father Jos, himself a former Formula One driver, felt him staying would cause divisions within the team.

That has inevitably led to speculation Max Verstappen would leave and, with Lewis Hamilton already announcing he is to join Ferrari at the end of the season, there will be a seat free at Mercedes.

Wolff, however, poured cold water on reports he was to meet with the Verstappen camp after this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix.

He told Reuters TV: “No, that’s one of the rumours.

“People make up meetings, make up what’s happening with the drivers but these things should be behind closed doors and everything that’s been out there was not really the right thing.”

Wolff has previously admitted Verstappen would be his first choice even though the Dutchman, who is on course for a fourth successive drivers’ title, has a contract with Red Bull until 2028.

Wolff was also asked about reports all-conquering Red Bull were about to lose the sport’s top designer Adrian Newey.

He added: “Adrian Newey is an iconic engineer in Formula One with a great track record and again, also there are so many people talking about what he eventually might do and whether he leaves Red Bull or not.

“I’m just looking at it like a fan and watching that space.”

Police name man whose remains were found in Kersal Wetlands

0

Detectives investigating a torso found in Kersal Dale, now believe the victim is 67-year-old Stuart Everett (pictured).

The formal identification process is yet to take place but DNA samples have been sent away for urgent forensic analysis.

Family liaison officers from GMP are supporting Stuart’s family during this distressing time.

Greater Manchester Police say the investigation has been “fast-moving” over the last three days, with many lines of enquiry explored.

Remains found at three other locations are still to be tested, but police are confident they belong to the same victim.

Detective superintendent Lewis Hughes said: “My thoughts and the thoughts of officers and staff across Greater Manchester Police are with Stuart’s family at this traumatic time. Family Liaison Officers are supporting them through each update in our investigation.

“On behalf of Stuart’s loved ones, I ask the public and the press to please respect their wishes for peace and privacy while they process this most devastating news.

“My officers and detectives, alongside additional resources from across the force, have worked tirelessly over the last three days to secure charges.

“We are grateful for the public’s continued help and support throughout this case. We understand the shockwaves this has caused throughout the community and beyond, and we hope you are reassured by the pace of our investigation and also our large police presence in the areas as we continue to make enquiries.

“We have officers drawn from different teams and units in GMP who have helped us search and their efforts do not go unnoticed, and they have all played an important role to help us get to this stage in our investigation.

“We said right at the start that our investigation will not stop until we have every stone unturned, and this continues to be the case. Our investigation has been a huge process so far, and we will continue to push forward in our enquiries to find answers for Stuart’s family.”

Michal Jaroslaw Polchowski (68) and Marcin Majerkiewicz (42) both of Worsley Road, Eccles, have been charged with murder.

A provisional date for a trial at the crown court has been set for March 3, 2025.

T20 World Cup 2024: Archer and Jordan included in preliminary England squad

Jofra Archer has been included in England’s preliminary squad for their defence of the T20 World Cup title in the West Indies and the United States in June.

Archer missed England’s triumphant run at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia through injury, with a long-standing elbow issue keeping him out for the best part of two years.

His last international appearance came on a tour of Bangladesh in early 2023, though he has played club cricket in Barbados and pre-season games for Sussex in a bid to prove his fitness since then.

The other headline selection is that of fellow paceman Chris Jordan, who has been recalled after being omitted from Jos Buttler’s squad for December’s tour of the West Indies.

His inclusion comes at the expense of Chris Woakes, who had been a fixture in England’s limited-overs setup and played a key role in helping them become the first men’s team to hold the T20 and ODI world crowns simultaneously.

Nine of the 15 players included in Buttler’s party featured at the 2022 tournament, with all-rounder Tom Hartley the only uncapped player in the 20-over format and Will Jacks the only other squad member to have never featured at a T20 World Cup.

Changes can be made to World Cup squads until the final deadline of May 25, with England set to prepare for the tournament by hosting Pakistan for four T20Is between May 22 and May 30.

The England and Wales Cricket Board say those players currently participating in the Indian Premier League will be available for the first of those matches, with England set to fly out to the Caribbean on May 31.

They face Scotland in their Group B opener on June 4, then take on Australia, Oman and Namibia before the conclusion of the group stage.

Buttler’s team will be hoping for a far better title defence than the one they managed at the 50-over tournament last year, when they crashed out in the first round after losing six of their nine matches.

England squad: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, Mark Wood.
