Stand-in captain Ollie Pope says ‘England still Stokes’ team’

England’s temporary captain Ollie Pope says the team is still very much under the reign of Ben Stokes, despite taking charge for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

Stokes has been ruled out of the event after injuring his hamstring for the Northern Superchargers during The Hundred this month.

It means 26-year-old Pope will become the nation’s 82nd Test captain, although Stokes will still be with the squad throughout.

Speaking ahead of the First Test on Wednesday, Pope said: “He leads us and he’s still in the changing room. It’s great to have him around.

“None of the messages are going to be different, we’re not going to play any differently. I’ll just be getting similar messages across, in my own way.

“He’s going to let me go do my thing over the course of this series, which is good for me.

“At the same time he’s obviously going to be watching, so I can have those conversations in the intervals if I think anything needs to change. It’s only a positive having him around.

“Having the vice-captaincy role has given me the opportunity to get my head around it if this opportunity came about.

“I’ve thought about it on the pitch, watched Stokesy closely as to how he manages the bowlers and the way he goes about it in the changing rooms.

“There are a few little bits I’ll take from him. It’s not a massive issue that I haven’t captained a lot in first-class cricket.”

Pope will become the fifth man to captain England for a Test series since 2009.

But alongside the absent Stokes, Pope will be without opener Zak Crawley, who broke his finger last month.

Sri Lanka have said that they may have a better chance of winning the Test due to Stokes’ absence, but Pope will be determined to prove he has what it takes to step up to the task.

Jake Paul: Tyson ‘getting knocked out’, says star in heated press conference

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson engaged in a war of words and shoving match at a febrile New York press conference ahead of their boxing match on November 15.

Rookie pugilist Paul, who has won 10 of 11 professional bouts largely held against faded athletes from sports outside of boxing, told the crowd to “boo yourself” amid jeers and chants for former heavyweight champion Tyson to knock the 27-year-old out.

“You’re like Tyson – you were good 20 years ago,” Paul retorted, insulting New York. “People think I’m going to get knocked out by this strong, powerful guy.

“There are people in my comments saying ‘look at his power, you’re going to get KO’d’. But what happens when I put this man to sleep?

“It’s not a joke. He’s saying it’s going to be my funeral. I love Mike, I respect him but we’re not friends anymore. I’m knocking [him] out and we’re going to see who’s dead.”

Jake Paul ‘ready’

The officially-sanctioned bout of eight two-minute rounds had been scheduled for July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Texas before Tyson withdrew at the end of May as the result of an ulcer.

“I was ready before but you needed a little break,” taunted Paul, who shot to fame as an actor and social media star.

“Your tummy hurt. Every time, these fighters sit opposite me and say I’m a YouTuber and from the Disney Channel.

“You’ll see, you’ll end up on the f****** canvas. I’m going to discipline you like a son. ‘He’s vicious, he’s a killer.’ I know all of these things. ‘He has one-punch knockout power, he’s the greatest heavyweight of all time.’

“I will prove all the haters wrong, and that’s what I’ve always done. I’m going to put on the performance of a lifetime.”

Mike Tyson: ‘Painful’ for Paul

Tyson, who will be 58 when he steps in the ring and has not fought in an official bout since 2003, was the quieter of the adversaries but laughed and looked bemused as Paul ranted, although the pair became physical during a face-off.

“He will come with the same intention, but the actuality? No,” said Tyson, predicting a “very painful” night for his opponent.

“As soon as I catch this guy, it’s going to be totally over. He’s going to run like a thief.”

A quarter of British drivers can’t travel without a sat nav, study finds

New research from private plate supplier Regtransfers reveals almost on in four British road users are now reliant on technology to navigate the UK’s roads.

A survey of British road users has revealed that almost one in four (23%) say that they would not be confident navigating without the use of a sat nav or traditional road atlas. Further, the survey shows even more reliance on the use of navigational technology when driving, since only half of all road users (47%) reported keeping a paper road atlas in their vehicle.

Survey respondents were presented with a fictitious scenario, in which they were 100 miles from home with no working digital sat nav or phone, and no “paper” road atlas to hand. Given this scenario, only a third of respondents said they would be “very confident” in their ability to use nothing but road signs to navigate their way home.

The use of sat navs has been part of the UK’s practical driving test since December 2017, with learners expected to demonstrate they can use one without it becoming a distraction. With apps like Google Maps and Waze offering free navigation through mobile devices, it’s not surprising that previous studies have found that 92% of British drivers use one.

Regtransfers CEO Mark Trimbee raises the question of whether or not we are becoming too reliant on technology to navigate our roads.

He said: “The convenience of sat nav technology can’t be ignored, and having live traffic updates can be a lifesaver when it comes to cutting down commute times.”

“Even so, it’s important that road users – young road users in particular – are conscious not to become too reliant on them when getting around. You never know when you might find yourself stuck with no phone or signal and unable to use these apps, and being able to follow traditional road signs is a vital skill that’s needed as a driver. I would also advise investing in a good road atlas as one of your ‘emergency provisions’ and leaving it in your car, along with a bottle of water, first aid kit, a blanket and a warning triangle. You might think these items are unnecessary, but there may come a time when you wish you had them!”

Sat nav apps on mobile phones may also be presenting another risk to drivers, as it’s illegal to use a phone’s satnav without it being properly fixed to the dashboard or windscreen. Drivers falling foul of this regulation could receive six penalty points and a £200 fine, and could risk losing their licence if they passed their driving test in the last two years.

Sisters jailed for helping a murderer evade capture

0

Husna Khan (29) and Farah Khan (28), both of Hyde Road in Manchester, have been sentenced to two years and six months in jail for their role to help a murderer evade capture.

In August 2020, Cole Kershaw was fatally shot.

He had been pursued in a silver BMW by Bury men – Mohammed Izaarh Khan (25), Kamran Mohammed (23) and Khayam Ali Khurshid (32). Mohammed then fired a shot that killed Cole.

The three men were found guilty of the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Raheem Hall (22), of Hardfield Street, Heywood, pleaded guilty to assisting an offender prior to the trial. He was sentenced to four years in a young offender’s institution.

As the investigation developed, information came to light that Khurshid had fled the country with his two sisters, Farah (pictured left) and Husna Khan (pictured right), in an attempt to evade police.

Pivotal role

The sisters had a pivotal role in planning his escape by booking hotels, hiring a car, and travelling on the Eurotunnel. They then travelled from Calais to Belgium, where Khurshid was booked on a one-way flight to Pakistan.

However, Khurshid had forgotten to get a COVID test and was unable to board the flight. A short time later, he was arrested by Dutch police in Amsterdam.

Sisters Farah and Husna were arrested and interviewed by police, but they denied their involvement and their knowledge of their brother’s involvement in the murder of Cole Kershaw. Their excuse was that they were simply going on a family holiday.

They were subsequently charged with assisting an offender in a murder and following a one-week trial at Manchester Crown Court in July 2024, they were both found guilty.

Extensive investigation

Detective inspector Marc Barker said: “It has been just over four years since the fatal attack, and our goal has always been to provide answers and some sense of justice for Cole’s family and friends.

“This was an extensive investigation, but I am pleased that all those involved in this cowardly attack are now behind bars.

“Khurshid’s arrest in Amsterdam shows that law enforcement’s collective capability is far reaching, and regardless of the steps you take to evade us, there is no place to hide.

“Proactive investigations into firearms enabled criminality in Greater Manchester and across the region have resulted in record breaking hauls and some of the UKs most harmful offenders being put behind bars for decades. Over the last twelve months alone, we’ve dismantled several criminal networks and secured convictions and jail sentences which have put criminals behind bars for over 300 years collectively.

“Whilst most firearms incidents are targeted and do not pose a threat to the wider public, we know the fear and anxiety these incidents cause amongst our communities. Our focus therefore remains on intensifying action, and we will continue to make crucial arrests, execute warrants, recover firearms, and hold those involved in the use, supply, and conversion of firearms in Greater Manchester to account.”

One killed and two stabbed in Longsight knife attack

0

Three people were stabbed in a frenzied attack in Longsight on Sunday night.

Officers found a 17-year-old girl, a 43-year-old woman and 64-year-old man had all suffered serious injuries.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, a 43-year-old woman passed away from her injuries at the scene. The two others remain in hospital for treatment with life-threatening injuries.

A 22-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is in custody.

Family liaison officers are providing support to the family at this time.

Neighbourhood sergeant Adrian Girtchen said: “We can feel the shock waves that this incident has sent through the local community, who either witnessed this attack, or woke this morning to hear the tragic news. Many of you may know the family, and our thoughts and wishes remain with them and everyone who has been affected.

“We have additional officers in the area who are there to support you and provide a strong and visible presence. If you have any concerns, or you need someone to speak to in confidence, please do so to one of our many officers who are there.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their support and understanding whilst we continue to carry out enquires at the scene. This is not something we take for granted, and we will continue to do all we can do support the family.”

“We continue to appeal for any information; we would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident to please come forward. We are also interested in speaking to anyone who was in the surrounding area near to Barnard Road at around 11pm on Sunday. If you have any dash cam, doorbell, or mobile phone footage, this could help us in piecing together what happened.

“Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 2027 or 101 quoting reference number 3371 of 18/08/2024 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

Holt Town development consultation now open

Feedback is being gathered for the proposals on Holt Town’s developments, with a consultation now open.

Holt Town presents an opportunity to create a new town within the city, developing 74acres (30ha) of underused, brownfield land that has the potential to deliver thousands of new homes – including significant affordable housing – alongside an exciting new cultural offer, new high quality green and play space, and new commercial space.

Bound by the city centre one side and Sport City and the Etihad Campus the other, major investment in this area will finally create a link between these two key economic drivers for Manchester and continue the long-term regeneration of Ancoats and New Islington into east Manchester.

Manchester City Council is also exploring how digital technologies can be embedded into the fabric of urban regeneration projects to modernise the way residents can access public services – from traffic management, waste collection and neighbourhood management to health and social care.

The Neighbourhood Development Framework (NDF) has been produced by a multi-disciplinary team led by Studio Egret West that will help guide investment in the Holt Town area over the next decade.

Councillor Gavin White said: “We have big ambitions for Holt Town and it’s not an exaggeration when we say we are creating a new town in our city, transforming an underused part of our city centre to create a new community, thousands of new homes, new commercial space and new jobs – all within a sustainable, green and safe neighbourhood.

“As ever, we need the insight from local people to feed into our long-term vision. Feedback from local people is really important as it helps guide our investment in neighbourhoods, with perspective from the people who know the area well.

“It’s easy to take part online – or drop-in to one of our in-person events. We look forward to seeing you.”

Consultation dates

The consultation will be open until September 29.

Respondents can provide feedback via www.holttownwoodtown.com

Local people can also attend two in-person drop-in events at Church of the Apostles & St Cuthbert’s, Ridgeway Street, Miles Platting, Manchester M40 7FY: Wednesday, September 18, 1 – 5 pm and Thursday, September 19, 3 – 7 pm

They will be taking place in the Great Hall, which is arguably the most impressive part of an already stunning building, so they will be particularly special.

“The dances cater for different skill levels and ages, so we would love to see new faces joining in the fun, alongside more established dancers.”

The tea dances will take place on the first Wednesday of every month, from 1 to 3pm. Tickets are priced at £6.50 each, with refreshments included.

Legal considerations when starting a company in London

Setting up a company in London requires careful attention to legal requirements. Whether you’re a local or an international entrepreneur, understanding the necessary steps and compliance standards is key to a successful start.

From choosing the right business structure to meeting UK tax obligations, every decision is vital to your company’s foundation. Registering with the correct authorities ensures that your business operates legally and efficiently from day one.

Navigating the legalities of company formation in London

Starting a company in London involves several legal steps that must be carefully followed to ensure compliance with UK law. Understanding the documentation required for international entrepreneurs, such as proof of identity, a UK business address, and a Memorandum of Association, is crucial. For example, company formation for non-UK residents must ensure they have the correct visa or work permit before establishing a company. Legal advice is often recommended to avoid pitfalls and ensure all necessary documents are in order.

Once the basic requirements are met, it’s important to draft Articles of Association outlining how the company will be governed. These articles are a legal necessity and must align with UK regulations, reflecting the company’s objectives and management structure. For instance, a company may include specific clauses about shareholder rights and decision-making processes. Failure to prepare these documents accurately can result in delays or legal challenges.

In addition to these foundational documents, it’s essential to understand the specific industry regulations that may apply to your business. Certain sectors, such as finance or healthcare, have additional licensing requirements. For example, obtaining authorisation from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is mandatory if you plan to operate in financial services. Ensuring you meet all these legal requirements helps establish your company on solid ground.

A registered office address in London is a legal requirement for all companies. This address must be a physical location in the UK where official documents can be sent and must be accessible to the public. Many businesses use a registered company address service, especially if they do not need a physical office. This service ensures compliance while also providing a professional image for your company.

Meeting UK compliance standards

Compliance with UK standards is a critical aspect of running a business in London, involving various obligations that must be met. One of the first steps is registering for tax with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), including obtaining a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) for corporate tax purposes. For example, if your business employs staff, you must also set up a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) scheme. Regular tax reporting is required; staying on top of these obligations is essential to avoid penalties.

In addition to tax registration, businesses must comply with the UK’s anti-money laundering (AML) regulations, particularly those in finance, real estate, and legal services. For instance, if your company handles large sums of money or offers financial advice, you must implement strict AML procedures. This includes conducting customer due diligence checks and maintaining proper records. Adherence to these standards can result in severe fines or legal action.

Another key compliance area is data protection, where the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) plays a central role. Companies operating in London must ensure they handle personal data responsibly, with clear policies to protect customer information. For instance, if your business collects customer data online, you must obtain explicit consent and secure the data against breaches. Non-compliance with GDPR can lead to significant fines and damage your business’s reputation.

It is important to maintain up-to-date records and file annual returns with Companies House. These records include details of shareholders, directors, and financial statements, which must be submitted each year. For example, failing to submit your annual confirmation statement on time can result in your company being struck off the register. Keeping accurate records and meeting filing deadlines is essential for maintaining your company’s good standing.

Choosing the right business structure

Selecting the appropriate business structure is a fundamental decision influencing how your company operates, its tax obligations, and its legal responsibilities. In the UK, common business structures include sole traders, partnerships, limited liability companies (LLCs), and public limited companies (PLCs). For instance, a limited liability company offers the advantage of separating personal assets from business liabilities, which can be crucial for protecting your finances. The choice of structure should align with your long-term business goals and the level of risk you’re willing to take.

Individuals who want complete control over their business often choose a sole trader structure with fewer formalities involved. However, this structure also means personal liability for business debts, which may not be suitable for those planning to scale their operations. On the other hand, forming a partnership allows multiple individuals to share ownership and responsibilities, which can benefit pool resources. For example, a law firm might operate as a partnership, with each partner sharing profits and losses.

Limited liability companies (LLCs) are the most popular choice for businesses in the UK due to the protection they offer owners. In an LLC, shareholders are only liable for the amount they invested in the company, reducing personal risk. Entrepreneurs often choose this structure to attract investors, as it provides a clear framework for ownership and profit distribution. Also, LLCs can benefit from various tax advantages, making them attractive options for new businesses.

Public limited companies (PLCs) are more complex and are typically chosen by larger businesses planning to raise capital through public shares. This structure requires higher compliance and transparency, including having at least two directors and a qualified company secretary. For example, a technology startup aiming to go public might opt for this structure to attract significant investment. However, the additional regulatory burden and reporting requirements make this structure suitable only for businesses with substantial resources and growth ambitions.

Registering your company with the proper authorities

Registering your company with the proper authorities is critical in establishing your business in London. Companies House is the primary authority for company registration in the UK, where you must submit your incorporation documents, including the Memorandum and Articles of Association. For example, registering a limited liability company requires providing details of the company’s directors, shareholders, and registered office address. This registration process legally recognises your business and allows it to operate within the UK.

In addition to Companies House, certain businesses must register with other relevant authorities depending on their industry. For instance, a financial services company must obtain authorisation from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) before commencing operations. Similarly, businesses involved in the sale of goods may need to register for VAT with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if their turnover exceeds the threshold. Ensuring all necessary registrations are completed is essential for legal compliance and smooth business operations.

Once your company is registered, you will receive a Certificate of Incorporation, which officially confirms your company’s existence. This document is important for opening a business bank account, signing contracts, and conducting other official business activities. For example, many suppliers and clients require a Certificate of Incorporation before entering into agreements with your company. Keeping this document safe and accessible is vital for ongoing business operations.

Maintaining your company’s registration involves meeting ongoing obligations, such as filing annual returns and updating any changes with Companies House. This includes notifying Companies House of any changes to directors, shareholders, or the registered office address. For example, if your company moves to a new location, you must update the registered office address within 14 days. Staying compliant with these requirements ensures your business remains in good standing with the UK authorities and avoids potential legal issues.

Growing utilities contractor selects Vanaways as vehicles partner

0

A rapidly-expanding North West utilities contractor has selected Vanaways as its vehicle provider for its ongoing growth journey.

CKR Utilities, which is based in Heywood in Greater Manchester, has purchased seven Iveco Daily MWB vans, having previously hired all of its 52 fleet vehicles.

As the company continues to grow – turnover is up to £8m in 2024 from £5m last year – CKR is now looking to expand its offering, starting with a traffic management division.

Meanwhile it continues to look to maintain cost-effectiveness of its operations, including vehicle expenditure.

Fleet manager Darren Wheatcroft met Hannah Pearson, Vanaways’ regional business development manager for the North and the Midlands, on LinkedIn.

She suggested that a bespoke funding method for vehicle purchase would provide significant cost savings. Mr Wheatcroft said the ratio purchased to hired vehicles at CKR was likely to increase over coming years.

“Like any business, we are susceptible to a fluctuating workload,” he said, “so we need to be careful that we don’t buy more vehicles than we need.

“However it’s become clear that there are major advantages to buying vehicles both in terms of availability and long-term cost, so it makes sense logistically and financially.

“These won’t be the last vehicles that we buy. We’re looking to grow and we’ll need to continue to add vehicles to the fleet.

“Our vans have particular requirements as they need to be able to tow 3.5 tonnes, with a 7 tonne gross train weight. So it’s great to have a partner like Hannah who understands our business and its requirements.”

CKR was started by director Craig Broadhurst in 2009, as a two-man team working on a private leakage contract. Since then the business has grown to a team of 96 staff working across multiple contracts in the North West.

The company portfolio of works includes private leakage, plumbing works, repair and maintenance on the North West water network, as well as developer services, fibre installation, electricity network maintenance, civils projects and traffic light installation.

Vanaways is itself undergoing spectacular current growth, having moved into new offices in Ham Green near the M5 at Bristol early last year.

Company turnover has risen dramatically in 2023, while the business is on track to deliver sales on more than 6,000 vehicles in 2024.

Working with a vast network of suppliers across the UK, the company offers free delivery with a digitalised sales process which enables quick fulfilment of the customer’s fleet needs.

Ms Pearson said: “It’s great to be able to bring our full range of deals and suppliers to companies like CKR Utilities so we can genuinely offer them the solution that works best for them.

“There are some amazing fleet opportunities out there for companies which are able to think outside the box, and we enjoy helping open up those avenues.

“Whether it’s the cost benefits of electrical vehicles over diesel, or various finance packages which we can bring to the table, we get a real buzz out of partnering with customers who are looking to grow.

“Like any growing trades business, Craig, Darren and the team at CKR rely heavily on their vehicles so it’s a pleasure to be here for them on the company’s growth journey.”
