Rochdale murder investigation underway after woman found dead

Police were called to a block of flats at the Freehold Estate and arrested a man

A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a woman at a property in Rochdale. Police and forensics were called to the scene at the Freehold Estate, off Tweedale Street, at around 4pm on Monday (May 25).

Upon entry to the address, officers found an unresponsive woman, believed to be aged in her 40s, who was pronounced dead at the scene. It followed a concern for welfare call. She has not yet been formally identified.

A man, aged in his 30s, has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, Greater Manchester Police said.

Pictures and videos posted online showed a significant emergency response at the scene, including forensic teams and paramedics. The incident is being treated as ‘isolated’ with no wider risk to the public.

Temporary Detective Chief Superintendent Jamie Daniels from GMP’s Major Incident Team said: “We appreciate this incident is likely to cause some distress amongst the public and local community. I would like to reassure you that we believe this to be an isolated incident, which does not pose any further risk to the wider public.

“Our priority at this time is conducting formal identification of the victim and informing her family as soon as we can. Specialist officers will be available to support them during this difficult time. We understand the severity of events such as this, and whilst we are in very early stages, our officers will work tirelessly to establish the full details of this tragic death.

“A scene will remain in place at this time, and there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days. Thank you for your patience as our investigations continue.”
