Neighbourhood officers from Little Hulton have been spreading the festive cheer by sourcing gifts for people in need this year.
In total, they’ve gathered 200 Christmas packages which they will deliver throughout December.
They will also be visiting care homes and vulnerable victims of crime in the area to host Christmas dinners, providing a friendly face and a hot meal.
This week, officers chipped in to help the dedicated staff prepare and serve food, before joining in with a range of festive activities with all in attendance.
Sergeant Helen Matthews from the Little Hulton neighbourhood team said: “Christmas can often be a lonely time of year for some people in our community, so it is important for us to do all we can to try and change this.
“It was a pleasure for my team to be able to deliver these gifts and join local residents for a Christmas dinner. It was a great way for us to reach out to different parts of the community and build stronger connections with people we might not otherwise come into contact with.
“Ultimately, this is what neighbourhood policing is all about, so it was time well spent for the team, and I hope we managed to make a difference to their day.”
Children are being safeguarded in Manchester thanks to training delivered by police officers to hotels and businesses.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has been recognised as one of the forces leading the way with the implementation of Operation Makesafe.
The national initiative aims to prevent child sexual exploitation from occurring within the hospitality sector through engagement, education, and test purchasing.
Chief superintendent David Meeney attended the launch event in Birmingham to showcase the effective partnership work GMP is doing to tackle child sexual exploitation in front of senior government leaders, senior police officers from other forces across the country, and representatives from the hospitality industry.
Under Operation Makesafe, the bespoke training sessions seek to support business owners and employees to identify potential victims of child exploitation and, where necessary, how to alert police officers so they can intervene before any young person comes to harm. By increasing awareness of the indicators of exploitation, officers believe they can better prepare businesses to recognise the signs and empower them to report their concerns.
At one hotel in the city centre, police received a call from an employee who, after receiving the Operation Makesafe training from GMP, identified that he did not feel comfortable with a older male guest who had tried to check in with a young girl who appeared to be in duress. This employee followed the training and asked all the right questions. As a result of his quick thinking and instinct, police safeguarded the young girl and made a crucial arrest.
Similarly, at another large hotel in the city centre, staff were concerned about an underage girl who had checked into a room with an older man. As directed by the Operation Makesafe training, they called the police, who were at the scene in minutes.
Operation Makesafe is in effect across all eleven Greater Manchester districts.
CS Meeney said: “To date, we’ve been able to make significant steps to protect young people in Manchester as a direct result of these training sessions and I would like to thank the local businesses for their commitment in joining our fight against child exploitation. Their support is crucial.
“We endeavour to support employees to identify potential victims, ensuring they report it police so we can effectively safeguard people, improve partnership information sharing, and upskill staff to specifically prevent vulnerable young people from becoming victims in the first place.
“We’re committed to making sure as many people in our communities are aware of the signs of child criminal and sexual exploitation and these case studies highlight the importance of effective partnership working; by having more people alive to the signs of exploitation it means we can effectively safeguard vulnerable people quicker and protect them from harm.”
Garry Bridges, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Safeguarding children is a priority for the council and its partners and we do that most effectively when the public, businesses and public services work together. Operation Makesafe is a good example of this approach and commitment to bring to justice those who seek to exploit our children”.
“The safeguarding of children’s welfare is everybody’s business and it’s important that people in the hospitality industry are equipped to spot the signs of child sexual exploitation and know what to do when something isn’t right. Together we can make it much more difficult for abusers to operate.”

The findings, unveiled by SALT’s 2024 Music and Attraction Survey, provide unprecedented insights into how musical preferences reflect core values and reveal what your playlist truly says about your personality.
Indie fans value a sense of humor above everything else, while fans of K-Pop rate faithfulness as their number one priority.
Honesty fails to make the top three wishes for lovers of Folk, Christian or Soul music while ambition makes the top three desires for lovers of Pop, Rap and Dance.
Fans of Acoustic, Pop and Alternative Hip-Hop include charisma in their top five wants, while lovers of Contemporary Country, Classical and Alternate Rock rank calmness within their top three most valued attributes.
The study also highlights how your favorite music genres can influence your chances of landing a date, revealing the most and least attractive genres to potential partners.
Indie fans claimed the top spot as the most popular singles, followed by K-Pop (2nd), Pop (3rd), Latin (4th), and Folk fans (5th). At the other end of the spectrum, Big Room (38th), Drill (37th), Dubstep (36th), Hardcore (35th), and Metal fans (34th) are least likely to find love.
‘Today’s research underscores the universal power of melodies to shape and reflect identity’ said Paul Rider from SALT. ‘Whether it’s the heartfelt lyrics of Soul or the energetic beats of Dance music, each genre carries a unique set of values which reveals our innermost desires in a partner. ‘These insights are a testament to music’s ability to bring out the best in us, offering a deeper understanding of how what we listen to shapes who we are.’
Other key insights from the research reveal that:

K-Pop enthusiasts prioritize faithfulness, commitment, and honesty. Their cheerful and approachable nature reflects emotional maturity and empathy.

R&B fans want to be with someone with good communication, ambition, and emotional authenticity. Their playlists reveal a strong focus on faithfulness, honesty, and intimate relationships.
The improvisational spirit of Jazz resonates with those who value ambition, emotional maturity, and commitment. Jazz lovers are known for their honesty and adaptability.
Dance and EDM fans thrive on calmness, ambition, and commitment, complementing their passion for energy-filled experiences and meaningful goals.
Fans of Hip-Hop and Rap are ambitious and bold, cherishing honesty, faithfulness, and the drive to achieve their goals.

Paul Rider, Co-founder at SALT, continues, ‘The genres we gravitate toward mirror the qualities we hold dear as individuals. Music is an extension of our emotions, values, and personality, different genres align with our core traits and values, painting a picture of the personalities behind the playlists. Organisational development consultancy h2h has secured a new contract with rail engineering firm LUR to deliver a leadership transformation programme to more than 50 managers within the Manchester and Doncaster-based business.
h2h is working with LUR to deliver the Leading with Impact programme, which will build leadership capabilities for the organisation’s managers through a programme spread across four key modules.
Sessions will be delivered through a combination of face-to-face and facilitated learning, led by four of h2h’s specialists, with the aim of creating a cultural shift in leadership experience, performance and impact across the business.
h2h’s founder and managing director, Susan Binnersley recently delivered a face-to-face bespoke module for LUR’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at Trafford Ecology Park in Manchester (pictured), outlining the goals of the partnership and hosting interactive sessions to share the core concepts of the programme.
Susan said: “We are proud to be partnering with LUR on this ambitious project to transform the capabilities of its leaders and ultimately create a more efficient, capable and fulfilled workforce led by skilled managers who understand their role and its importance within the business.
“It was a pleasure to host a bespoke session at Trafford Ecology Park in October, working with the SLT on a training day to ensure they fully understand the goals of the programme and can support their own team members who will be completing their training over the next six months.
“It also means that the SLT can role-model the leadership and management behaviours that the upcoming programme will equip the business with, maximising its benefits for the entire business as we roll it out across all three Manchester sites and in their Doncaster facility.”
Phil Chilton, managing director, LUR, said: “We chose to work with h2h because Susan and the team have a proven track record in delivering organisational development within the engineering sector and understand the unique challenges we face.
“The recent SLT session that h2h hosted was a resounding success, ensuring the whole team understands why our managers are taking the Leading with Impact training and the vital skills that they will gain. Having already seen some fantastic outcomes in the first phase of the partnership, I am looking forward to seeing the results as our colleagues complete the final modules over the next six months.”
LUR is a joint venture between Lucchini RS, Italy and Unipart Rail Ltd, providing wheelset and wheel machining and wheelset, gearbox, and bogie overhauls for the UK rail industry and has UK facilities in Doncaster and Manchester.
Experts have shared their tips for uncovering “free” money this month to ease the financial strain of Christmas spending.
On average, Brits spend around £650 during the festive season on presents, food, and celebrations, often leaving them feeling the financial pinch and stressed in January.
However, two specialists have revealed how you can turn things you already own into cash—sometimes over £100—just when you need it most.
Among the top items to sell are Lego and old holiday currency, which can provide a welcome financial boost during the holidays.
She said: “It depends on what people have in their houses. For some it’s toys – especially if they have children – while for others it’s clothes or maybe figurines. It really can be all sorts.
“It’s worth remembering it doesn’t have to be large items, it can be lots of little things that have a decent resale value.”
Sian says items being in good condition is important while boxed goods, or those that have a box with them, are “much more saleable”.
One banker in the toys department, according to the decluttering guru, is Lego – even if it’s not grouped in the original packages.
She said: “Lego is great – it always sells. Even if you have a box of old pieces that are all mixed up, it’s pretty much a failsafe when it comes to reselling.
“People might be after a certain piece or pieces, but very often they are prepared to buy a job-lot and sift through it.”
Clothes don’t earn as much, but there is a healthy market for certain items and styles on online platforms such as Vinted, Olio and Facebook Marketplace.
Sian says there are some good habits to adopt that will help you earn some extra cash while avoiding your wardrobe bursting at the seams.
“If you’re someone who likes to buy new items, look at what they could replace,” she said. “Whenever you bring things into the house, think about what you could let go of.
“Start out by doing this once or twice a month and see how it goes. It’s worth noting that selling isn’t for everyone, but once you start trying to implement these habits it becomes a lot easier.”
After you’ve identified the stuff to go, there are a few simple steps to take to make sure you see it through.
Sian said: “Have an area in your house where you can put items you want to sell, and then give yourself a deadline.
“If it hasn’t gone within a month, for example, then maybe think of donating it or getting rid in another way. Using and connecting with the local community is a great way to buy, sell and gift.”
These are not the only things that you can use to boost the coffers in time for Christmas. Any unused holiday money gathering dust in a drawer can also lead to a handy payday.
Research by Leftover Currency revealed that this amounts to a staggering £2.7billion across the UK, or around £67 per adult.
Mario Van Poppel, founder and owner of Leftover Currency says this is a simple way to organise and earn at the same time.
“The good news is even the out-of-date currencies that are no longer legal tender can be easily exchanged and boost your bank account,” he explained.
“Something we hear all the time is that pre-euro currencies are worthless, but that’s simply not the case – even if the central bank of the country in question has stopped exchanging them.
“That also goes for withdrawn banknotes from outside the eurozone, so it’s well worth having a look to find anything you have lying around.”
Families turned out in their tens of thousands on Sunday for Manchester’s magical Christmas Parade which brought an extra special sparkle to the city’s streets – despite the weather.
Now in its third year, the fabulous family favourite parade was even bigger and better this year with well over 400 participants taking part in a route that was packed with families and children.
Filled with a Santa’s sack-full of magical moments the memory-making parade delighted the crowds from start to finish.
Led by Father Christmas, who was hitching a ride to the North Pole on the spectacular Elf Express joined by a band of mischievous elves, the parade saw cheeky segway skiers swooping and sliding their way along the parade route in vibrant retro ski gear, whilst blasting out festive Christmas classics in a flurry of fun.
A fabulous toy procession, giant snow-coloured yeti, oversized polar bear with playful giant paws, mistletoe dancing mice, Christmas robins and a toe-tapping hip hop elf had everyone clapping and cheering.
Everyone also loved the enchanting Snow Queen inside her giant snow globe, Aurora Borealis stilt walkers and the airborne puppetry of Cloud Travellers Nimbus and Cumulus who from their illuminated clouds cast magical raindrops from the tips of their fingers.
Elton Wrong piano man and his portable stadium stage, playing the piano and crooning his way through a top ten of pop hits and show tunes had everyone singing along, whilst the Global Grooves Nutcracker Bloco Band brought the festive vibes playing Santa’s favourite Christmas songs.
The day also saw plenty of pop-up festive fun around the city and Christmas themed giveaways along the parade route – including a Christmas crafting marquee for children who were invited to get crafting and then join Father Christmas and his band of mischievous elves and walk with them in the parade.
An extra-special treat was also in store this year to help spread a little more Christmas cheer courtesy of the same naughty elves who gave away 1500 vouchers for free hot chocolate winter-warmers as part of ‘Santa Sunday’ to any Santa wannabes who turned up dressed head-to-toe as Santa or sporting a Santa hat.
Councillor Pat Karney said: “A big shout-out to all our Christmas hero parade participants for braving the cold and the wind today to help make sure this year’s parade went ahead and was such a stunning success.
“Seeing the absolute joy on the faces of all the children and families who turned out to watch it was fantastic and made it all worthwhile.
“Our Christmas Parade is one hundred per cent made for memories and bringing families together to enjoy special times together like this is what the festive season is all about.
“There really is nowhere quite like Manchester at Christmas and this has proved once again why Manchester is Santa’s favourite city.”
This year’s Manchester Christmas Parade was sponsored for the first time by Manchester-based company Rosgal Ltd.
Kerry Breheny, director of Rosgal Ltd, said: “Founded in Manchester 25 years ago, we’re proud to support the city during the festive season. As a local business working on major infrastructure projects across the region, we’re committed to giving back to the community and making this Christmas memorable for families across Manchester.”
