Bifold Doors vs. Sliding Doors: Which Is the Right Choice for Your Home? Expert Insights from Matthew Leach, Director of Aluminium Doors Direct

Bifold doors, often praised for their ability to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor spaces, have gained significant popularity in recent years. But how do they differ from sliding doors, and which option is the best fit for your home?

Understanding the Distinction:

Bifold doors operate by folding back in a concertina-style manner. Typically, two to seven panels, hinged together, travel along a concealed track in the floor, ceiling, or both. In contrast, sliding doors consist of two or more large glass panes that slide horizontally to the end of a frame. One notable difference is that bifold doors require space for the panels to stack on one side, while sliding doors do not extend outward.

Functionality, Pros, and Cons of Each:

Matthew Leach, Director of Aluminium Doors Direct, highlights the distinct features of each door design:

“Bi-fold doors have the primary benefit of being able to be folded all the way back, virtually opening up one wall to your patio and garden. Your property will look more impressive with a seamless indoor-outdoor space.

“On the other hand, traditional sliding doors often only allow for a 65 percent opening to the left or right. Pocket doors may be useful, these are glass doors that open up a larger space by sliding into unnoticed crevices in exterior walls.

“Slider doors provide you more control. They can be opened a fraction of an inch for a gentle breeze, a few feet to nip outside, or all the way to allow in fresh air.   If you choose a bifold system, a “traffic door” or access leaf is a choice to take into account, especially if it’s the sole door leading to the garden.”

Aesthetics: Which Design Enhances Your Home’s Beauty?

Matthew discusses which door design complements your interior schemes:

“Fewer panels and greater glass expanses allow for more natural light to enter your home, making sliding doors a huge bonus for modern and contemporary schemes.

“Bi-fold doors can be pulled back to widen the aperture, but when closed, there is a lot more vertical frame exposed than with sliding doors. Sliding doors simply have a higher glass to frame ratio, and little blocks the view of your garden or the countryside behind it which can be aesthetically pleasing and add to open schemes. If you want to maximise natural light or have larger, year-round views of your garden, sliding doors can be a better choice.”

Cost Effectiveness: Which Option Offers Better Value?

In an era where both budget-consciousness and environmental concerns are prevalent, Matthew provides guidance on cost-effective and energy-efficient design solutions:

“They’re both similar in price, it depends on the configurations. However, sliding doors with a few panes become noticeably more expensive as they become wider because huge single units of glass are quite expensive.
“Because they have a smaller frame, sliding doors are typically more thermally efficient than bifold doors. However, both sliding and bi-folding doors can be customised to meet clients needs.”

WATCH: Ryder Cup star Hovland enjoys hole in one

The Ryder Cup starts on Friday – but Viktor Hovland showed he is ready for the fight with a hole in one in today’s practice round.

The Norwegian aced the short par-four fifth, to the delight of the crowds at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome.

It amounted to a rare albatross for Hovland, who will be hoping to repeat the feat when the action gets underway for real against a United States side that won with ease at Whistling Straits two years ago.

Stanislav Kondrashov Explores the Marvel of Monarch Butterfly Migration in New Publication

Stanislav Kondrashov offers a captivating exploration of the annual migration of monarch butterflies in his latest publication, “The Migration of Monarch Butterflies.” In this informative work, Kondrashov delves into the awe-inspiring journey undertaken by these butterflies, spanning thousands of miles from North America to Mexico.

As autumn arrives, monarch butterflies embark on an extraordinary odyssey to reach their winter sanctuary in the Oyamel fir forests of Mexico. Kondrashov delves into the enigmatic navigational abilities that enable these delicate creatures to undertake such a remarkable migration. Current research suggests that monarchs rely on the orientation of the sun and Earth’s magnetic field as their guiding compass.

One of the fascinating aspects unveiled by Kondrashov is that no single butterfly completes the entire journey; instead, it’s a multi-generational effort, illustrating the cyclical nature of this natural phenomenon. Throughout their arduous migration, monarchs depend on patches of native plants, particularly milkweed, as crucial rest stops and breeding grounds, underscoring the significance of conserving these vital waypoints.

The Oyamel fir forests in Mexico, serving as a refuge for the monarchs, are depicted as ecosystems in urgent need of conservation. Threatened by logging, these forests raise concerns about the future of this captivating spectacle. The article also sheds light on ongoing initiatives aimed at establishing “monarch corridors” of native plants to support their migratory journey.

Beyond the migration itself, the article delves into the broader ecological roles played by monarch butterflies, including their pivotal role in pollination and their position within the food chain. The monarchs’ migration carries cultural and artistic significance, inspiring various forms of creative expression, from art to poetry.

Readers are encouraged to explore the full article and accompanying video. to gain deeper insights into this remarkable ecological phenomenon. To stay updated on Stanislav Kondrashov’s work and insights, visit his website and social media channels at www.stanislavkondrashov.com.

Boosting business resilience: VPN advantages in a digital world

Everyone’s talking about virtual private networks or VPNs. But what are they?

Originally, VPNs were mainly used by IT professionals to provide secure remote access for roaming users and connect different office sites across the internet.

However, in recent years, VPNs have gained popularity among privacy-conscious consumers and become an essential tool in their surfing toolkit. But can this new version of VPN also benefit businesses?

The VPN advantages for business

#1 Increases productivity

The need to be connected is only taking root and there is no visible change in this direction. Digitalisation in the digital world is conquering more and more people and this trend will continue. In business, this is even more important, especially to keep leaders connected.

With VPN apps you can provide free access to the Internet and commercial servers. If you think that business security is not violated when you try to connect from a cafe, then you are deeply mistaken.

But if you use a VPN for Mac, all traffic will be encrypted. For example, VeePN has military-grade 256-bit encryption. It is wise to download VeePN and use it both at work and for personal purposes. This increases productivity and safety at the same time

#2 Free access to content

Internet users encounter varying content availability worldwide. Travelers and remote workers often face obstacles accessing videos or articles in foreign countries. Difficulties in accessing data resources via local servers make working abroad challenging. VPNs offer a potential solution, enabling travellers to freely define their digital location with server locations worldwide. IP anonymisation allows users to bypass content restrictions.

With a diverse range of servers available, workers can always find the most efficient route to essential resources. Regardless of their location, workers remain connected to the office. Users enjoy unrestricted access to documents, news sites, and blogs. Nothing hinders their progress, including government censorship and corporate filters.

#3 Get the best deals

VPNs are also useful for online shoppers. Many eCommerce websites focus on offering exclusive deals to buyers in specific locations. For example, airline tickets in San Francisco might be priced higher than those purchased in New Orleans. Prices are influenced by location, as companies attempt to maximize their profits from different markets.

Although this marketing strategy benefits corporations, it is detrimental to consumers. However, VPNs provide a solution by circumventing the geo-filters that determine deals for shoppers. By changing their virtual location to different parts of the country or even the world, shoppers can seek out the best bargains and potentially save a significant amount of money.

#4 Security

If your company doesn’t require site-to-site tunnelling or formal remote access provisioning, there are still two characteristics you are likely to share with larger businesses. First, you probably have resources in the cloud, such as data or business apps. Second, you probably have travelling or remote users. A VPN service can enhance your security without requiring expensive data centre-grade routing hardware if your company has either or both of these characteristics.

You can establish a secure connection to the resources they access, such as files stored on Dropbox Business or apps provided via Microsoft Office 365 Business Premium. While these services offer their security measures, adding a VPN connection on your end can further protect you and your business.

#5 Avoid ISP throttling

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) impose bandwidth throttling by reducing the connection speed of specific users. Typically, data throttling targets users who download large amounts of data, although ISPs may also limit the torrenting of smaller files. Throttling can lead to complete download cut-offs or cause slight delays in gaming or streaming.

Fortunately, VPNs offer a solution. When using a VPN, ISPs encounter difficulties in applying bandwidth throttling. IP address anonymisation conceals the identity of data packets, preventing ISPs from identifying file downloaders and making it impossible to detect when a user surpasses their data limit.

#6 Resilience and stability of business

During natural disasters, cyberattacks, or power outages, businesses gain a vital advantage by maintaining uninterrupted operations. VPNs play a crucial role in this aspect by enabling businesses to sustain productivity, even when physical offices are inaccessible.

VPNs empower employees with secure and efficient connectivity, allowing them to work remotely. This ensures the continuity of essential tasks and minimises disruptions. By utilising VPNs, businesses can maintain crucial operations, provide uninterrupted services to clients, and preserve overall productivity during challenging times.

Moreover, VPNs contribute to robust disaster recovery strategies by facilitating backup and recovery processes. In case of a disaster, businesses can quickly recover and resume operations, mitigating the impact and minimising potential data loss.

Crucial VPN advantages

VPNs offer numerous crucial advantages. As we’ve observed, their benefits encompass improved privacy, convenient access to international content, encrypted data transmission, and safeguarding against ISP data throttling. Moreover, companies can establish secure connections between central offices and remote workers. Additionally, VPNs are cost-effective, and flexible, and serve as invaluable security tools when integrated into a comprehensive security setup. Though not flawless, their efficacy remains undeniable.

Payrow Leads the Way in Gender Diversity with 30% Female Workforce in Fintech

Despite being known for its innovation and rapid advancements, the global Fintech industry faces gender diversity challenges, with only 26% of the workforce being women. In response, UK-based Fintech firm Payrow is actively addressing this gender disparity.

Recent research titled “Transforming UK Fintech: Overcoming Barriers to Female Advancement,” conducted collaboratively by EY and Innovate Finance, highlighted challenges faced by women in Fintech, including feeling undervalued (27%) and citing unclear advancement opportunities (25%).

Payrow is committed to gender diversity and reports that 30% of its team comprises women. The company emphasises that a diverse team, which includes individuals of varying ages and genders, brings diverse perspectives, enhances problem-solving, and strengthens team cohesion. Payrow follows unbiased hiring practices, hiring individuals based solely on their expertise and values.

To address the low number of female applicants in the Fintech sector, Payrow suggests implementing conscious efforts to ensure balanced intake, including women-only shortlists. It also advocates for transparent pay scales and the use of technology to further gender diversity. Encouraging diversity not only fosters innovation but also creates a positive work environment.

Promoting female presence in Fintech requires a comprehensive strategy, including setting clear gender diversity goals, introducing mentorship initiatives, ensuring unbiased recruitment processes, offering flexible work options, and cultivating an inclusive work environment.

As the Fintech sector evolves, Payrow emphasises the importance of focusing on future implications of gender diversity. Beyond promoting STEM fields for women, the rise of AI and the growing importance of emotional intelligence in business may reshape the skill set required, potentially improving gender parity.

Addressing stereotypes and promoting female tech leaders is crucial. Recognising industry trends and opportunities for women is key to achieving a balanced Fintech sector. Gender diversity enriches the talent pool and enhances a company’s appeal.

Derbyshire Eco Furniture Business Preserves Memories with Innovative Memorial Benches

An award-winning Derbyshire sustainable furniture business, known for creating outdoor furniture from recycled plastic, is introducing an innovative digital platform for memorial benches called ‘My Place and Story’.

TDP Ltd, based in Wirksworth, recently received the prestigious King’s Award for Sustainable Development. With ‘My Place and Story,’ they offer a unique way for those purchasing their commemorative benches to add a QR code. When someone sits on the bench and scans the code with their phone, they can access the life story of the person being commemorated.

The QR code can also be used to record information about the place where a bench has been situated, with one of the first examples being Shipley Country Park in Derbyshire.

One of the first life stories commemorated on their benches is that of former Welsh international rugby player Brian Davies, whose bench is located outside the rugby clubhouse at Pentrych near Cardiff. Passersby can now learn about Brian’s life and the significance of his memorial bench through the QR code.

TDP’s benches are made from 100% British recycled plastic, in line with the company’s commitment to sustainability. Each order comes with a certificate detailing the amount of plastic saved from oceans and the reduction in CO2 emissions.

Dale Commemorative bench, for example, contains recycled waste from 36,985 plastic bottle tops, stopping 1.49 cubic metres of plastic from going into landfill. Environmentally speaking, the saving is the equivalent of a 975 mile car journey – around the distance from London to Florence in Italy.

Rob, one of the company’s owners, emphasised the importance of creating lasting memories with their furniture. The unique digital platform ensures that these memories will endure for generations to come, contributing to cultural history.

Rob also highlighted that using recycled plastic not only produces long-lasting, durable furniture but also helps preserve the stories of people’s lives.

Pep ‘comfortable’ despite Manchester City defeat at Newcastle

Manchester City may have suffered an early exit from the EFL Cup, but boss Pep Guardiola was “comfortable” with his side’s performance at Newcastle.

The hosts had to defend for long periods, particularly in a first half dominated by City, before striker Alexander Isak netted the only goal in the 53rd minute to send Newcastle through.

Guardiola, however, was full of praise for his side despite venting his frustration at the officials at the full-time whistle.

He said: “We played an incredible game. It was a tight game and the players who played, played really good. It is football. Congratulations to Newcastle.”

On what was no doubt a long coach journey home for the City boss, who had made his feelings very clear about his side not being able to fly to Newcastle, there were still a few positives to take away from the match.

“I leave comfortable with how we played, no injuries, and minutes for Mateo [Kovacic] and Jack [Grealish].”

For Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, the result meant that he finally secured his first victory over Guardiola, and he applauded his side’s efforts and belief to win the tie.

He said: “Second half, we were excellent in most aspects, defensive and offensively. We attacked well and probably deserved to win.

“There were tactical changes, but the biggest thing was belief.”

The fourth-round draw took place after the match, which saw the Magpies handed another difficult tie and a rematch of last year’s final as they head to Old Trafford to play Manchester United.
