Variety or speciality: The pros of each business approach

When it comes to business strategies, you are going to find a dozen opinions on both sides of any single point.

Debates over mass production versus artisanal products or hands-on management versus delegation are common. One of those debates is whether to provide a variety of products and services or to zero in on one market.

To clear up that debate a little, here’s a summary of the key advantages for both sides.

Broad approach

Most commonly associated with things like supermarkets and e-commerce, the idea here is to cover as many customer needs as possible in one place.

The American giants Walmart and Amazon are the epitome of this but it’s also common in media like streaming services and online casinos.

If you look at the typical range of casino games available at major sites, you can see that having multiple options under one banner works well for that industry. For example, online roulette games at Betfair include multiple forms of live-streamed games and users are one click away from a whole range of other options like slots, blackjack, and live game shows.

The key advantage of selling ‘broad’ is that you will appeal to a larger number of customers and you get the bonus of ‘while I’m here’ shopping.

This is the idea that customers are more likely to choose somewhere to shop that lets them cross off several tasks at the same time and may also be inclined to make extra purchases when they’re already there. Walmart has based its entire business philosophy on the concept, selling everything from car tyres to frozen food.

Narrow approach

This is both the old approach to business as well as the new one. Before the advent of mass production, it was very common to have companies with a single product in mind.

Now, perhaps in response to ‘megastores’, many people are gravitating back to these kinds of businesses which often come with the label of artisanal products. While it most commonly applies to foodstuffs like coffee or pastries, it can be expanded to other products like luggage or furniture.

Reputation, quality, and originality are what consumers seek from this approach. Look at the small company Ariel based in Somerset. They make small, super-powered cars that resemble go-karts and that is the only thing they do. As such, they’ve been able to establish their brand in that niche market and now have global recognition.

Which one works best?

There’s no clear way to say that either approach is better than the other. It comes down to your own business target and there’s nothing to say you can’t find a compromise between both.

The wide array of specialist products from Yamaha is a testament to that by itself, and in general, it’s better to think of it as being more on a scale than just the two extremes.

If you are looking into starting a business or perhaps just looking for a different direction, broad or narrow will be a critical factor to consider. Remember to have a clear business goal in mind, and that should guide you down one path or the other.

Manchester derby is just another game, says City boss Guardiola

Pep Guardiola says it’s too early in the season to class Sunday’s Manchester derby as anything more than just “another game”.

Guardiola’s Manchester City have made another impressive start to the Premier League season, despite uncharacteristic back-to-back defeats to Wolves and Arsenal, and sit second, two points adrift of leaders Tottenham.

United are a further six points back in eighth but Guardiola is still wary of the talent in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

He said: “They are always dangerous. It doesn’t matter the managers – and I have seen a few – they are always a tough opponent with the quality of the individual, the character, the momentum.

“They have the ability not to be on top and then just score goals. We know their quality, no doubt about that.”

Asked to rate United and the rest of City’s title challengers, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss said nine games was not sufficient to make a proper analysis.

“It’s too early,” added Guardiola. “When you play just nine games, many things can happen from my experience. We have been behind in February and March and have been able to win at the end.

“All the time when you get the fixtures, United are a contender. Ask me the question with nine games left and I will say if they are contenders but late October it is not going to happen.”

Ten Hag said “all eyes will be on this game globally” but Guardiola was happy to play down the size of the occasion.

“Old Trafford is a special place and it is special for our fans,” he said.

“But it is just a football game, not like an FA Cup final or one of the last fixtures of the season where winning or losing can define winning the Premier League or not.

“There are still 87 points to play for so it is another game and we have to be focused on what we have to do to beat them.”

Erik ten Hag hoping for more from Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana

Erik ten Hag has urged Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana to build on the progress he has made in the past two games and take it into Sunday’s derby with Manchester City.

Onana has found life tough at Old Trafford following his summer switch from Inter but looked more assured in the 2-1 win at Sheffield United last weekend before stealing the headlines with a last-gasp penalty save in the 1-0 Champions League victory over FC Copenhagen in midweek.

He is likely to be tested by City’s potent attack on Sunday and, although encouraged by his recent improvement, Ten Hag thinks there is better to come from the Cameroon international.

He said: “You give him the standards and the expectations but it’s also about getting to the same level. He has high expectations from himself.

“We give him the confidence [and tell him] ‘look what you did in the past for great clubs in great leagues, you have the ability and the skills’.

“The last two games have been progress, now we have to keep this going. It’s very good but at Manchester United, good is not good enough.”

Onana’s heroics on Tuesday night saw him dragged into a controversy with forward Alejandro Garnacho putting out a now deleted social media post that hailed the goalkeeper but also included two gorilla emojis.

Onana quickly insisted “no action should be taken” and Ten Hag also claimed there was no lingering issue between the pair.

The former Ajax boss said he wasn’t concerned Argentinian Garnacho would be banned “at this moment”, and added: “We are talking with the Football Association.

“But what you see, and I can confirm that and want to emphasise, we are together, we are united and you have seen that in the post of Andre Onana.”

United have scored just 11 goals in their nine Premier League games this season and Ten Hag is hoping they can make better use of being in good attacking positions against Pep Guardiola’s European champions.

“We are not consistently at the level we can be, like [we were] in the first 30 minutes at Arsenal and the first 20 minutes at Bayern Munich” he said.

“We should do this on a consistent basis. We don’t take the benefits from moments of attacking transition. We have the ability in our team to do it and that is how to progress.”

United come into the derby six points behind City, and with a doubt over the availability of key midfielder Casemiro.

Ten Hag added: “I think it’s a match that is so huge because it’s Manchester, it’s internal but it’s also about world football. All the eyes will be on this game globally.”

SafetyCulture unveils new platform to support UK frontline workers

Global tech company SafetyCulture, which has a Manchester HQ, has unveiled a supercharged version of its platform currently to help UK businesses boost productivity.

Its current workplace operations system is used by more than 17,000 companies but its new and improved version is an all-in-one platform with an array of new features for tasks like training and asset management.

The announcement underpins SafetyCulture’s ambitious growth plans for its Manchester office, aiming to build on its UK client roster.

Its current clients include organisations such as the NHS, National Grid, British Airways and Transport for Greater Manchester.

Gap in the market

SafetyCulture, known for creating the world’s most-used checklist app (iAuditor), believes it is filling a gap in the market by building software that frontline workers actually want to use.

Traditionally, investment in technology has been focused on supporting systems for office-based workers. This is despite the fact that frontline workers – individuals who must physically show up for their job and who are often critical to keeping the economy moving – represent 80% of the global workforce.

It includes innovative tools that digitise paper-based forms from a photo and converts work instructions and equipment manuals to enable training on the go. The platform also harnesses the power of AI to create custom-training and inspection templates in minutes.

Transforming everyday tasks

Feico Mol, SafetyCulture’s general manager EMEA said: “Our goal is to change the way people work, for the better, and these new platform changes are designed to transform every-day tasks for people. No more toggling multiple systems and apps or navigating old-fashioned paper-based procedures.

“This is the most significant update to our products since we started in 2012. We’ve packed our platform with as much value as possible for our customers and we’ve invested heavily into research and product development. With the right tools and communications, businesses have the opportunity to harness the latent potential within their frontline teams as well as providing significant cost savings.”

Origins in Australia

Originally started in Australia, SafetyCulture was recently valued at over £1.38 billion and its EMEA business continues to grow, with more than 150,000 UK workers using its technology. The plan is to expand its UK operations, supporting its ambition to reach over 100 million deskless workers around the world by 2032.

Alongside the platform’s launch, SafetyCulture has also published new research, which delves into the experience of the frontline workforce in the UK. The research shows six in 10 frontline workers (60%) are likely to use a single app (or a platform) when it comes to completing tasks at work, and more than four in 10 (41%) are excited to learn about emerging technologies, including AI.

The research also highlighted that frontline workers overwhelmingly believe that the best ideas for improvement come from their own ranks (55%) rather than leadership (19%). While the vast majority of UK frontline workers (81%) said the business they work for is not currently operating at its full potential.

Manchester tax specialist hailed one of UK’s ‘top accountancy firms’ for second year running

A Manchester tax specialist has been named as one of the UK’s best accountancy firms for the second year in a row.

Altrincham-based Forbes Dawson, which works with some of the UK’s most successful business owners and entrepreneurs, made the list of this year’s ‘Top Accountancy Firms’ by eprivateclient, a leading website for private client practitioners, including lawyers, accountants, trustees and independent financial advisors.

The consultancy, which was also named in last year’s list, said the award was testament to the “consistently outstanding” work of its team.

Laura Hutchinson, managing partner at Forbes Dawson (pictured), said: “We are incredibly proud to be named in the list for a second consecutive year. eprivateclient is a well-regarded resource in our sector. We would like to thank them for the honour.

“But most of all, we would like to thank our staff, who consistently deliver outstanding support to our clients. This acknowledges a real team effort.”

Launched in 2012, Forbes Dawson has managed the tax affairs of high-net-worth individuals, business owners, entrepreneurs and supported accountants for more than a decade.

Expert comment

It has since delivered expert comment on key tax issues to many of the UK’s leading news outlets, including Sky News, the Financial Times, the Daily Telegraph, This is Money and Investors’ Chronicle.

“We are committed to providing the latest expert advice on many tax subjects,” Laura said. “Our personalised approach means will not only deliver market-leading results – we also develop long-standing, valued relationships with our clients, which are integral to our success.

“We are passionate about what we do and will continue to provide market-leading services for many years to come.”

Police tackle crime ahead of clocks changing

0

Ahead of the clocks going back on Sunday (October 29) and the nights drawing in, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is reminding residents to think about home security and personal safety.

When many people will be looking forward to the extra hour in bed this weekend, opportunistic thieves will be looking forward to the darker nights as they provide the perfect cover for committing neighbourhood offences such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime.

GMP has dedicated neighbourhood officers deployed in communities across Greater Manchester, working round the clock to keep people and properties safe.

Darker Nights campaign

Chief superintendent Emily Higham said: “The aim of the ‘Darker Nights’ campaign is to provide an insight into what the Force is doing to tackle neighbourhood crime, raise awareness of where incidents are taking place, and provide crime prevention and security advice.

“We understand the profound effect that burglary and theft have on victims and often their families, as these crimes are personal and invasive and can have a significant impact on your wellbeing and sense of security.

“Throughout the autumn and winter months, our neighbourhood officers will be out in your community conducting high-visibility patrols, executing warrants, and pursuing and arresting offenders that are targeting you, your families, and your homes.”

“We will continue to be proactive in targeting thieves, but we need your help and intelligence so we can act quickly against anyone who may be acting suspiciously in your area. We also want to encourage you to consider taking additional security and personal safety steps to help prevent yourself from becoming a victim.”

There are a number of simple measures that you can take to make things more difficult for potential thieves and keep them in the dark this year:

Oldham Council reveals it suffers 10,000 cyber attacks each day

0

Oldham Council is to install new computer upgrades after announcing it receives more than 10,000 cyber attacks per day.

Members of Oldham Council’s cabinet said they would like to spend £682,000 on a “modern data protection service”.

In a meeting of the cabinet, councillor Abdul Jabbar said they needed “cutting-edge technology” to make sure the council data is safe after announcing there are 10,000 attacks on the system on a daily basis.

He added that more than 50 councils, including  Manchester City Council, and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority were already working with the intended Rubrik platform.

Out of date system

He said: “We’ve been using for a number of years the Commvault system hardware and software which has served us really well but given that we’ve got a modern IT landscape and we need to have the cutting edge equipment to make sure our data is protected and if we need to restore it then what we’re suggesting is that we need a new system. In simple terms, we’ve got a system that is now out of date.”

He went on to explain the current system cannot protect back up data against malicious damage and some services held in the cloud.

Money well spent

Councillor Elaine Taylor added: “Given some of the cyber attacks we’ve seen recently this is quite timely. It would be money well spent. It’s a scary prospect to think all of our systems could go down and that all of that data would be out in the public domain.”

Buying the new system is “critical for both disaster recovery scenarios” and to protect against accidental deletion and corruption, officers said.

The new purchase follows malware attached on the University of Manchester, which had data copied after some systems were accessed by an unauthorised party.

Buttler baffled by England’s terrible form

Captain Jos Buttler conceded there was “no obvious reason” as to why England have performed so badly at the World Cup.

The 2019 champions’ hopes of advancing to the semi-finals were virtually extinguished today following an abysmal eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

They now need to win their remaining four matches and hope for a freakish set of results elsewhere to go through.

England were bundled out for a feeble 156 and then, despite a bright start, wilted in the field with Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama hitting hugely impressive half centuries to see Sri Lanka to their victory target in just 25.4 overs.

England have won one of their five games in India and looked a thoroughly disjointed unit devoid of form and confidence.

Buttler said: “It’s been an incredibly tough and incredibly disappointing tournament. I’m disappointed in myself and all the boys that we haven’t given a good account of ourselves.

“There’s no clear answer at the moment [as to why]. I can’t fault the boys’ efforts but we’re playing a long way short of our best.

“There are a lot of experienced cricketers [in the dressing room] who have been through a lot – a lot of confident people. You don’t become a bad player overnight, you don’t become a bad team overnight. I think that’s probably the biggest frustration, that we’ve been so far short of our best, and for no obvious reason. I just can’t put my finger on it at the moment.

“We’ve been short of the standards we set ourselves. The kind of mistakes we’re all making, you don’t see that usually. We haven’t been doing the basic things well.”

White-ball coach Matthew Mott was equally flummoxed by how bad England had been and knows their qualification hopes are “in a bit of trouble”.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s hard to explain. We had a good series with New Zealand leading in and we came over here full of confidence with some quality players that have won a lot of World Cups but for whatever reason we seemed to have a lot of players out of form at the wrong time and it’s hurt us dearly.”

England’s selection policy has come under the microscope, having started with an all-rounder heavy line-up which was ditched for the chastening defeat to South Africa at the weekend and then revisited today against Sri Lanka.

“We always reserve the right to pick players for different conditions,” added Australian Mott.

“We admitted last time that we got the balance wrong so we went back to the balance we had before. But when you lose by that margin, it’s not about a couple of small selections, it’s a collective and we all have to take responsibility.

“It’s been a sub-par effort in this campaign and everyone is going to come down from the hills to dissect what we’ve done wrong but we have to make sure we find some positives and learn from it.

“Everyone feels like they’ve let people down – supporters, friends, family – everyone is really hurting.”

England have four games remaining, starting with a daunting clash with in-form hosts India on Sunday, but Mott insists the players will not be giving up despite the precarious predicament they find themselves in.

“It’s going to be a real test of character over the next few weeks to make sure we can salvage something out of this campaign,” he said.

“Mathematically we have to have a lot go our way [to qualify] but we’ll keep fronting up, treating each game in isolation but realistically we’re in a bit of trouble.”
