New baby gibbon arrives at Twycross Zoo
Staff at Twycross Zoo are celebrating the birth of a super cute baby gibbon, who arrived on International Gibbon Day! The pileated gibbon is being looked after by the zoo’s team of expert keepers & veterinarians. The female infant, who is yet to be named, was born to mother Valentina, who is 25 years old and 43-year-old father Helmut. Both Helmut and Valentina are very important individuals within the EAZA Ex-situ Programme (EEP) for pileated gibbons, due to their genetics. The programme, which runs across zoos in Europe, consists of just 56 individuals and is coordinated by Twycross Zoo. It aims to conserve a healthy population of these animals in zoos, so this latest birth is a real success for the ongoing protection of the species. Twycross Zoo’s pileated gibbons live along three other gibbon species in their world-class Gibbon Forest habitat. The new arrival still spends all her time on mum, but is becoming increasingly aware of her surroundings. The infant will remain with her parents for several more years as she grows and develops.

Lynsey Bugg, curator at Twycross Zoo, is the EAZA Ex-situ Programme (EEP) coordinator for the pileated gibbon. She said: “We’re delighted to announce the birth of a pileated baby gibbon at Twycross Zoo. “It’s always a special moment when we welcome any new arrival and this birth is incredibly important as part of the pileated gibbon EEP, which is dedicated to protecting future populations of the species, who continue to face severe threats in the wild. “As a conservation charity, our overarching aim is to help save the species with whom we share our planet through conservation action. We recently unveiled our ambitious new Conservation Strategy, and supporting healthy ex-situ populations of species is one of our six core conservation goals that will help maximise our impact in the fight against extinction.”

The pileated gibbon species is listed as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is native to Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. Pileated gibbons face a number of threats in the wild, most critically deforestation and habitat loss, as wild forest is converted into farmland or used for human developments. They are threatened by hunting for meat and the pet trade. Families visiting the Midlands zoo are invited to experience ‘October Fiesta’ and discover the ‘Magic of Animals’, where they can immerse themselves in an array of enchanting entertainment and magical activities, learn about exotic animals from all over the world, and much more. Inspired by the Mexican celebration Dia de Los Muertos, the special activities will run on selected dates until Sunday (November 5).

England bowler David Willey announces retirement from international cricket

England bowler David Willey has today announced that he will be retiring from international cricket at the end of the current World Cup.

His decision comes after England cricket announced new central contracts, with Willey the one member of the World Cup squad who did not receive a deal.

The left-arm seam bowler will bow out of the game, having played a vital role in so many of England’s ODIs, including this World Cup campaign which he has played the past three matches. He has taken five wickets and scored 32 runs so far this tournament. 

The 33-year-old has always been a regular feature in the ODI side; however, was dropped on the eve of the 2019 World Cup for Jofra Archer. England went on to win the tournament.

With England still having three games left to play in the group stages of this World Cup, the defending champions are facing elimination after losing five out of six games so far. 

England face Australia on Saturday, where they will be looking to secure a win against their Ashes rivals.

Sale solicitor conquers Spanish three-peaks for The Christie

A law firm director has completed the Spanish Three Peak Challenge to raise more than  £3,000 for Manchester’s Christie Hospital.

Chris Partington from Slater Heelis, was inspired by the kindness and support the team at The Christie have shown his mother-in-law in recent months.

He decided to embark on the three-day challenge to conquer the three highest peaks in mainland Spain, completing the spectacular challenge in 82,000 steps and with the help of 16 protein bars, three bags of Jelly babies, an entire tube of Voltarol and more Deep Heat cream than he cares to remember.

Initially hoping to raise £2,500 for the much-loved hospital, Chris has surpassed this with his efforts drawing in over £3,000 to date, with donations continuing to be received via his JustGiving page.

He said: “Witnessing my mother-in-law go through her own incredibly hard challenge this year in such an inspiring way and seeing how the outstanding care from The Christie made it that little bit less scary for her, and all of us as her family, made me determined to do something big that would give me the best chance of raising a significant amount of money for The Christie!”

Rewarding

He continued: “I found the Spanish three peaks very challenging and rewarding in equal measure and while I pushed myself to my absolute limit, I am so glad that I was able to do it and complete it and thrilled that I surpassed my initial fundraising goal and have raised a huge £3,000! 

“I am so grateful for the generosity of each and every person that has donated. Seeing first hand where their money goes, I can promise it will be incredibly well spent on a service that is simply vital to people in our community.” 

The Spanish Three Peaks Challenge involves trekking through the Sierra Nevada National Park, mounting the summit of three of Spain’s highest peaks; Veleta, Alcazaba, and Mulhacén, over a three-day period, covering around 30 miles.
