Manchester United unlikely to enjoy busy transfer window, Murtough warns fans

Manchester United will endure a quiet January transfer window to ensure they remain compliant with the Premier League’s financial rules, football director John Murtough has told fans.

United have endured a difficult second season under Erik ten Hag, sitting six points adrift of the Premier League’s top four and suffering a humilating group-stage exit from the UEFA Champions League.

The Red Devils’ struggles have come despite a busy summer window in which they spent an estimated £162million on permanent deals for Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana, also signing Sofyan Amrabat and Sergio Reguilon on loan.

United’s underwhelming form had left supporters hoping for reinforcements when the transfer window reopens in just under two weeks, but the Red Devils are unlikely to be busy.

Reports have previously suggested United have little room to manoeuvre within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, and after seeing Everton deducted 10 points for a breach of the regulations earlier this season, the Red Devils will be cautious.

In comments prepared for United’s fans’ forum, Murtough said: “Looking ahead to the January transfer window, we are not expecting it to be particularly busy.

“There will always be the possibility of deals around the edges of the squad, particularly in terms of finding opportunities for players who are not playing as much football as they would like.

“However, we’ve always been consistent in saying that we do not see January as the optimal time to do business and our recruitment strategy remains focused on summer windows.

“We’ve seen this season that financial fair play rules have real teeth, so we have to be very careful to ensure that we remain compliant, and we will.

“But that means being really disciplined on spending going forward, with a balance between incomings and outgoings.”

Jadon Sancho could be among those on the move if United sanction exits for those on the fringes of the squad, with the former Borussia Dortmund winger being frozen out following a public dispute with Ten Hag in September.

United are still yet to formally announce the sale of a minority share to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS, who are set to assume control of the club’s football operations after agreeing to purchase a 25 per cent stake.

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has waded into the row between Virgil van Dijk and Roy Keane, telling the latter to “get a life”.

Van Dijk, speaking after the drab 0-0 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United on Sunday, said “only one team tried to win the game” and that “Liverpool were superior in all aspects”, prompting a rant from Keane on Sky Sports in which he accused the Netherlands defender of being arrogant.

Van Dijk dismissed Keane’s jibe and Thompson also threw his support behind the Liverpool captain.

He told talkSPORT: “It wasn’t arrogant by any means. I would say it was more frustration.

“I really feel as though, you’ve come off that game, you know you’ve dominated, Manchester United have had that one chance with [Rasmus] Hojlund, and you’ve just felt frustration. Arrogance wasn’t in it.

“And for Roy Keane to be talking about arrogance in people…come on, do me a favour.

“And I love Roy but I played that back and he just kept repeating the word. Roy, just get a life.”

The draw, in which Liverpool had 34 shots compared to United’s six, saw the Merseysiders slip to second in the Premier League table, behind Arsenal.

Stage set: Ambitious revamp plans for Heywood Civic Centre submitted

Multi-million pound plans to transform Heywood Civic Centre into a first class arts and performance venue are drawing nearer, now a planning application has been submitted.

Under ambitious proposals by Architects, K2, the much-loved venue, which has been an icon in the town since the sixties, will undergo a major revamp.

The venue is currently well used but proposals include some major improvements including increasing the size of the foyer, with a brand new cafe and bar area to the front.

More plans

  • Create a brand new glazed frontage onto Peine Square to modernise the building’s appearance and open up the new foye
  • Upgrade to the performance space, including new sound and lighting.
  • Brand new retractable seating in the auditorium to allow flexible use of the space.
  • More lifts and accessible toilets, including a changing places facility and baby changing station to make the building accessible to all.
  • Reducing the building’s environmental impact.

The changes will enable the venue to build on the success of its popular events programme, with new opportunities for the community to participate in the arts, as well as the relocation of local arts organisation, Cartwheel Arts, to a new base in the centre.

Discussions with locals

The plans, which have been honed following discussions with the local community, also include reconfiguration of the back of house facilities, creating a larger changing room area for the performers. This will allow for an even bigger and better variety of productions to be staged.

The plans are part of an £8.5 million investment into arts and culture in the borough over the next three years, thanks to Arts Council England and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport funding.

In addition to Heywood Civic Centre, Touchstones Rochdale is being transformed into a visual arts led creative and cultural hub, alongside the creation of a cultural district in Rochdale town centre.

Heywood Civic Centre is operated by the council’s leisure and culture partner, Your Trust, who are also partners in the project, and Rochdale Development Agency (RDA) are managing the project on the council’s behalf. North-West based Hive Projects and K2 Architects have been appointed as part of the design team.

Councillor Sue Smith, said: “I’m pleased to see this project progressing with these exciting plans. The civic centre has been an important part of Heywood life for generations and is a real asset to the town. These upgrades will greatly improve the experience for both performers and audiences, helping attract a wider range of cultural events to Heywood.”

Jen Cleary, director north, Arts Council England, said: “Our Let’s Create strategy wants everyone to have access to a remarkable range of high-quality cultural experiences where they live, so it’s exciting to see the plans to transform Heywood Civic Centre progress. A modern, accessible building where the whole community can enjoy a wide variety of cultural events and activities is great news for Heywood, which is in one of our Priority Places for investment, and I’m very pleased that we have supported this project through our National Lottery funded Capital Investment Programme.

Scheming brothers jailed for exploiting illegal drugs

A pair of brothers have been jailed for their involvement with criminal networks and illegal drugs.

Mohammed Asif (20) (pictured left) and Mohammed Muneeb Asif (22) both of Barlow Road, Manchester, were sentenced to 36 and 32 months respectively at Manchester Crown Court on Friday.

The pair used a dedicated prepay mobile phone line codenamed ‘FREDO’ in the Longsight and Levenshulme areas.

When a kilogram of Class A drugs and bulking agents, along with drugs paraphernalia was found at a house following a warrant on Barlow Road, the Asifs were charged with possession and intent to supply.

A further search located the mobile phone used to facilitate this supply.

The phone was used to submit ‘flare’ messages to advertise the use of drugs and stock to supply, showing active communications from August 2022 to around 100 contacts and believed to be used before that date.

Messages such as ‘Power both Fredo drops all day’ and others including a postcode which linked it back to the Asifs’ home.

Phone evidence data showed more than 8,500 messages were sent and 6,500 messages received, more than 8,500 calls made and 25,000 received.

The incoming calls far outweighed the outgoing which is a key indicator of a drugs line.

No regards for public safety

PC Andy Shaw said; “After a meticulous investigation we have managed to secure sentences for two more key members involved in a large scale drugs supply across our city.

“County Lines operation involves the exploitation of children and vulnerable adults to store drugs and move money as well as weapons through coercion, intimidation and violence.

“Both Asif brothers did this blazingly and with no regards for the safety of the public.

“At GMP we will continue to act on intelligence and bring known drug dealers to justice by ensuring we combat County Lines operations as it brings a whole host of serious crimes being committed for an individual’s gain and pure greed to fund an illegitimate lifestyle.”

Police armed with presents headed over to Tameside General Hospital children’s wards this week.

PC Will Drummond, the hospital liaison officer working within the Prevention Hub at Tameside, ran and fundraised for the event.

He drummed up support from local businesses including Boots Denton Crown Point, Dukinfield Co-Op, Poundland Ashton-under-Lyne Asda, The Works and the Card Factory at Denton Crown Point, to raise more than £200 worth of gifts.

PC Drummond was supported around the wards by apprentice Hannah Doyle, schools officer Tony Lawton and Tameside chief inspector Claire Galt.

He said: “Within the Prevention Hub, we look to help solve persistent district problems through a specialism of roles and expertise. The team consists of myself, a licensing officer, the schools officers, and missing from home team.

“The day was a huge success and we made a lot of children and parents’ day.”

Chief inspector Galt added: “It was a pleasure to accompany the team around the wards and deliver some festive joy to youngsters. Some of the children have been on this ward for quite some time and they were so happy to see us.

“I must thank all local businesses for their generosity in their gift giving, as we couldn’t have done this without their support.

“This shows that we do more than just crime prevention – within the Tameside Prevention hub we want to support our communities to the best of our ability and give back when we can to those who need it most during the Christmas season.”

He did win the European Championship in October – his first televised ranking title for almost two years – but the 53-year-old admits he is flying under the radar at Alexandra Palace.

He told BBC Sport: “No-one expects me to play well because I haven’t played well most of the year – it’s been on and off.

“I played well in the Nordic Masters, I played well at the European Championship, that is about it. That was my own fault because I didn’t play the Players Championships.

“The reason I have had a rubbish year is because I took time off and have not been playing competitive darts all the time so I am not in that zone. That is the only reason.

“When I have tried to come back to a tournament, I am not actually match-ready in terms of focus compared to if I was playing in them all.”

That’s not to say Wright doesn’t fancy his chances of playing well on the biggest stage of all.

He added: “I am ready. You don’t want to peak too soon. You have just got to do enough in the first couple of rounds and get yourself into the tournament after Christmas then peak at the right time.

“Don’t write me off because I am going to be there right at the end. There is no reason why I can’t win. I know how to win it, I know what you have got to do.

“There are a lot of players who haven’t won it and are still trying to find how to win it and what to do at the right time.”

Another match to look out for is the one that precedes Wright’s entrance – between Christian Kist and Luke Littler. Littler, 16, retained his Junior World Championship title on Sunday and makes his Worlds debut among the senior ranks.

Already being talked about as a future winner, he will fancy his chances against Kist who won the 2012 BDO World Championship.

Predictions

There have been precious few shocks so far at Alexandra Palace. And while the smart money is still on Wright to get through, don’t be surprised if he is taken all the way by Williams. The Ally Pally stage is not a place to find your game and if Wright starts slowly expect Williams to take advantage.
I’d take Littler to see off Kist – assuming nerves don’t get the better of him – while Szaganski, O’Connor, Smith and Joyce should all come through unscathed.

All investors received 100% of their capital investment and a cumulative £25.9m interest was earned.

The alternative lending firm will celebrate its 10-year anniversary going into 2024 in a strong position, underlined by some of the highest return rates across the property lending sector, an experienced recovery team and the backing of reputable industry bodies.

Somo’s ability to lend and recover is the result of over 300 combined years’ experience in the sector, and a team of seasoned bridging specialists that are passionate about providing human-touch client service.

The firm experienced 12% growth during 2023 and doubled its Investor Relations team in April. Somo expects 2024 to be another record-breaking year.
