Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has blamed Fenway Sports Group (FSG) for Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave the club, suggesting the German had grown tired of being asked to perform ‘miracles’.

Despite overseeing a period of major success since acquiring ownership of the club in 2010, FSG has attracted fierce criticism from supporters over several issues, ranging from Liverpool’s support for the European Super League project to a perceived lack of investment in the playing squad.

Speaking to Sky Sports News after Friday’s announcement, Enrique – who spent a half-season under Klopp following the German’s 2015 arrival at Anfield – asked whether FSG had forced Klopp’s hand.

“You cannot blame him. Obviously, he’s a legend,” the former left-back said. “I think Liverpool should build him a statue – it’s because of him that Liverpool have achieved what they have in the last few years.

“I think something happened, I have my opinion. Maybe it is to do with the spending, with the owners. He was fighting with them every year to sign the players he needed.

“He cannot do miracles all the time. I think he’s just grown tired of that.

“From my side, as a former player… every year he needs to do miracles to win stuff. In this January transfer window, I think the team needs something, but the owners won’t do it.

“I really believe they need one or two players, and I think Klopp does as well, even if he doesn’t say it.

“I think he started to feel it will be a good season, and maybe he will leave like a king. When I first saw it, I was really mad, not at him but at the owners. I was really, really mad.”

With Klopp’s time on Merseyside coinciding with Pep Guardiola making Manchester City the Premier League’s dominant force, Enrique feels the German may have grown tired of struggling to compete financially.

“You have a manager like him, who is able to compete with Manchester City, who can buy whoever they want. He knows Liverpool cannot spend this kind of money, but he needs backup,” Enrique said.

“How can you change your opinion from renewing your contract a few months ago to leaving at the end of the season? It doesn’t make sense to me, but I respect it.

“He’s a legend of the club. I was very, very lucky to be under him for a season even if I wasn’t at my best, he’s a great guy and one of the best I ever saw as a manager.”

While Haaland will not face Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, Guardiola outlined his hope that the striker could return for City’s next league fixture as he revealed the true nature of his injury.

“In the start we thought it was a bit less, but there was a little fracture on the bone,” Guardiola said. “When you have these kinds of injuries, it’s between six and eight weeks out – it’s not a lot.

“The bone needs time to close and now he’s almost at the end of eight weeks, next weekend or next week.

“He feels good and now he needs time for the rhythm and to start to get the minutes, then he will be fit. In Abu Dhabi and here in the last week to 10 days, he didn’t feel anything which is a good sign.

“Coming back, after two or three sessions he felt a little bit of disturbance, that’s why we were cautious, but now he feels good and in three or four more days, hopefully against Burnley, he can play some minutes and after that, we will see.”

He told the club’s official website: “I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.

“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.

“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.

Liverpool finished a disappointing fifth in the Premier League last season but have had a much better campaign in 2023-24. They currently top the table, five points clear of Manchester City.

Klopp is satisfied that improvement enables him to walk away with his head held high.

He added: “I told the club already in November. I have to explain a little bit that maybe the job I do people see from the outside, I’m on the touchline and in training sessions and stuff like this, but the majority of all the things happen around these kind of things. That means a season starts and you plan pretty much the next season already.

“When we sat there together talking about potential signings, the next summer camp and can we go wherever, the thought came up, ‘I am not sure I am here then anymore’ and I was surprised myself by that. I obviously start thinking about it.

“It didn’t start [then], but of course last season was kind of a super-difficult season and there were moments when at other clubs probably the decision would have been, ‘Come on, thank you very much for everything but probably we should split here, or end it here.’ That didn’t happen here, obviously.

“For me it was super, super, super-important that I can help to bring this team back onto the rails. It was all I was thinking about. When I realised pretty early that happened, it’s a really good team with massive potential and a super age group, super characters and all that, then I could start thinking about myself again and that was the outcome. It is not what I want to [do], it is just what I think is 100 per cent right.”

Liverpool are still fighting in four competitions and Klopp is eager for his long farewell not to distract from the quest for trophies.

He said: “We will have a moment, maybe the last matchday here or somewhere else – I mean in other countries or other competitions. There’s enough time to do these kinds of things. Let’s now really go for it. The outside world want to use this decision, laugh about it, want to disturb us.

“We are Liverpool, we went through harder things together. And you went through harder things before me. Let’s make a strength of it. That would be really cool. Let’s squeeze everything out of this season and have another thing to smile about when we look back in the future.”

Mike Gordon, the president of Fenway Sports Group, paid tribute to Klopp and the impact he has had on Merseyside.

He said: “First and foremost, on behalf of John Henry and Tom Werner, I would like to state our profound appreciation for Jürgen. It goes without saying that we will be hugely saddened to lose not just a manager of such calibre, but a person and leader for whom we have enormous respect, gratitude and affection. At the same time, we fully respect his wishes and the reasons why he has decided the current season will be his last at Liverpool.

“In keeping with Jürgen’s expressed wishes, we will save the comprehensive tributes for a more appropriate time but nevertheless, we would be remiss if we did not take this opportunity to reaffirm that his appointment remains one of the greatest blessings of our time as owners.

“The incredible achievements of the intervening years speak for themselves, so too does the joy that Jürgen and his team have brought to all of us supporters. His many accomplishments will never be taken for granted. To appropriate an adage synonymous with another Liverpool managerial great, Jürgen Klopp ‘made the people happy’ and we have total confidence he will continue to do so until his eventual departure.

“It is testament to Jürgen’s unstinting professionalism and ongoing commitment to the best interests of Liverpool FC that his decision was arrived at in a way which allows for business as usual to be maintained for the remainder of his tenure while simultaneously creating an opportunity for us to prepare for the future.

Sinner will play the winner of the second semi-final between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev on Sunday while the world number one was left to pick through the rubble of an uncharacteristically shoddy display.

“He outplayed me completely,” admitted Djokovic.

“I was shocked with my level in a bad way. This was one of the worst grand slam matches I’ve ever played. At least that I remember.”

Djokovic remains upbeat about the rest of the season and is adamant he still has plenty to offer at 36 years of age.

He added: “I still have high hopes for other slams, Olympics, and whatever tournaments that I’ll play. It’s just the beginning of the season.

“It’s not the feeling that I’m used to. It has been incredibly satisfying for me to start off most of my seasons with a grand slam win and having never lost in the semis or finals of the Australian Open.

“So this time it’s a bit different, but it is what it is. Let’s see. I don’t know. 

“This tournament hasn’t been up to my standard or the level that I would normally play or expect myself to play, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the beginning of the end, you know, as some people like to call it. 

“Let’s see what happens in the rest of the season.”

Djokovic’s frustration was in stark contrast to Sinner’s delight with the 22-year-old advancing to his first grand slam final despite squandering a match point in the third set tie-break.

He said: “It was a very, very tough match. 

“I started off really well. He missed for two sets. I felt like he wasn’t feeling that great on court, so I just tried to keep pushing and then in the third set I had match point and I missed the forehand, but you know, this is tennis.

“I just tried to be ready for the next set and obviously the atmosphere was so great.”

The England international has only made six starts across all competitions in 18 months with Pep Guardiola’s side, with just two of those coming in the Premier League.

Phillips has not started a single league game this campaign, prompting Guardiola to apologise for his lack of gametime last month, saying the 28-year-old “doesn’t deserve what has happened to him”.

Newcastle United were strongly linked with a move for Phillips, but with the Magpies adopting a cautious approach in the transfer market after seeing Everton and Nottingham Forest charged with breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, West Ham got their man.

There is reportedly no option to make Phillips’ stay at the London Stadium a permanent one, but for now, the midfielder is simply focused on enjoying his football again.

“I’m really pleased to be here,” he told the club’s website. “There’s always been a lot of speculation about me moving to West Ham, so I’m really excited to get going now.

“There’s so much to look forward to in the second half of the season for the club and I can’t wait to be part of it.

“There’s an unbelievable group here and if I can come in and add the quality that I know I’m capable of, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans plenty to be excited about between now and the end of the season.”

With the Hammers finding themselves in contention for a top-six Premier League finish and eyeing another long European run in the Europa League, boss David Moyes believes Phillips’ experience can help him make an immediate impact.

“We are really pleased to bring a player of Kalvin’s quality to West Ham United,” Moyes said. “We’ve been big admirers of him for a long time and we believe that he will add strength and competition to our squad.

“Kalvin is an England international midfielder, with proven Premier League experience. We’re excited to welcome him into the group and look forward to working with him.”
