Ten Hag: Manchester United did not aggravate Martinez injury

Erik ten Hag has denied suggestions Manchester United aggravated Lisandro Martinez’s knee injury by sending the defender back on during last week’s win over West Ham.

Martinez is expected to be sidelined for around two months after he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during United’s 3-0 win over the Hammers last Sunday.

The centre-back – who only returned to action last month after fracturing his metatarsal last year – went down following a freak collision with Vladimir Coufal in the second half.

Martinez initially returned to the pitch and attempted to carry on, though he was forced off moments later.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa, Ten Hag said United were not able to ascertain the extent of the injury immediately.

“I don’t think so. It was his decision and he was comfortable to be back on the pitch, but after he tried, he stopped during the next attack,” Ten Hag said when asked if Martinez’s injury was made worse by his attempt to continue.

“It is not possible [to know the extent of the injury in real time]. In some situations, it is clear and obvious but there is always a grey area and it is very difficult to see when you are on the sidelines.”

Ten Hag is hopeful Martinez will return before the end of the season, and while he acknowledges the Argentine will be a big miss, he is confident United will cope in his absence.

“It’s a setback, of course. He was just returning, you saw his contribution to the team when he plays,” Ten Hag said of Martinez.

“Apart from his technical skills, he also brings a mentality to the team.

“It’s a big setback for him, he’s very disappointed but he’s a fighter. He’ll be back, he’ll be stronger. We think he can still be back by the end of the season, and there are games to play.

“We have to replace him as a squad and have very good players in that position who can play there, who will play there and will perform.”

The fit-again Victor Lindelof will now compete with the likes of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans for a starting spot, while Ten Hag also believes Luke Shaw is a viable option in the centre of defence.

“We have options. We have good centre-halves in our squad. The others are available, Luke can also play there,” the Dutchman said.

“I am quite confident that we can keep this process going and that others can fulfil that position and contribute. Those players are very experienced and are very good players, so it is up to them now.”

UEFA chief Ceferin to step down in 2027 despite support over rule change

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin today received the green light from Europe’s football associations to stand for a fourth term, only to announce within minutes he did not wish to continue in the role beyond 2027.

Ceferin put forward a proposal in December to change UEFA statutes that would enable a president to continue beyond three terms. That was heard, and passed, by the UEFA congress this morning with only the English FA voting against the move.

Having got the support he needed to potentially stay until 2031, Ceferin then held a press conference at which he said he was tired and would walk away in three years’ time to spend more time with his family.

The Slovenian said: “It’s my decision if I want to run in 2027. I am tired after covid, two wars and nonsense projects such as the European Super League.

“What makes me happy and proud is that I am the captain of a ship that has navigated a storm very well and we will continue to do that over the next three years.

“The football community is united like it has never been united before. Be sure that the majority of people in football are not clowns, the majority love our beautiful game.

“I decided six months ago that I would not run any more. The reason is that after some time every organisation needs fresh blood, but mainly because I was away from my family for seven years now.”

In revealing why he waited until after the vote before making the announcement, he added: “I intentionally didn’t want to disclose my thoughts before, because firstly, I wanted to see the real face of some people and I saw it. I saw good and bad.

“And secondly, I didn’t want to influence the vote. I have to say it was amusing to see this hysteria all around.

“I have a beautiful life in football, I have a beautiful life outside of football as well.”

It is thought his reference to seeing “the real face of some people” was a swipe at UEFA’s former chief of football Zvonimir Boban, who resigned in protest at Ceferin’s plans to change the UEFA statutes around terms and described them as “disastrous” in an open letter to the Croatian press.

England name unchanged starting XV for Six Nations 2024 game against Wales

England will start with an unchanged XV for the first time in more than four years when Wales visit Twickenham in the Six Nations on Saturday.

Vice-captain Ellis Genge will be the only new face in head coach Steve Borthwick’s squad from the 27-24 win in Italy on Saturday, returning from a foot injury on the bench.

“We know there are areas of our game to improve,” said Borthwick, calling Wales “spirited”.

“With a new player group and a number of new caps, we have tried to develop our game on both sides of the ball.

“Such changes take time, and I was pleased how quickly the players settled and adapted last weekend against Italy.”

Joe Marler will earn his 90th cap for England, who last started an unchanged team in the World Cup final in 2019.

England: Steward; Freeman, Slade, Dingwall, Daly; Ford, Mitchell; Marler, George (capt), Stuart, Itoje, Chessum, Roots, Underhill, Earl.

Replacements: Dan, Genge, Cole, Coles, Cunningham-South, Care, F Smith, Feyi-Waboso

Criminality crackdown by police in Piccadilly Gardens

0
High visibility police patrols attended Piccadilly Gardens as part of a criminality crack down in the troublespot.
On Tuesday, in an attempt to make off from police, a suspected drug dealer assaulted two officers.

Amidst all of this, officers recovered 31 wraps of cocaine and three snap bags of heroin from the suspect. He has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Inspector Dan Cullum said: “Drugs cause an untold amount of harm and disruption in our communities so removing this many wraps of cocaine and heroin from just one individual is a great result.

“Our staff work tirelessly day in day out to drive out the criminality from Piccadilly Gardens and work to safeguard those who are at risk of exploitation, but each day they are often faced with volatile individuals and put into difficult situations. This type of behaviour is unacceptable and we will continue to remove these type of people from our streets.

“Through a combination of hotspot patrolling and community intelligence we’re able to make a real difference in the area.”

Officers are consistently looking for information about drugs, particularly in the Piccadilly Gardens. Contact police on 101, or via the reporting section of gmp.police.uk

Six Nations 2024: England host Wales, France visit Scotland and Ireland face Italy – preview, how to watch and predictions

The opening round of games in this year’s Six Nations did not disappoint, with Ireland laying down a marker with their deeply impressive win in France, England edging out Italy and Wales falling just short of an incredible comeback against Scotland.

More thrills and spills should be expected from the second round of fixtures, starting at Murrayfield as France seek a response against the Scots.

Meanwhile, it’s always a huge occasion when Wales visit Twickenham, where they have not won a Six Nations game since 2012. England have struggled at home under Steve Borthwick, and they will be eyeing an improvement following their less-than-convincing performance in Rome.

On Sunday, Ireland will expect to maintain their bid for back-to-back Grand Slams when they host Italy, though Gonzalo Quesada’s team gave a good account of themselves in their opener and have nothing to lose in Dublin.

Here, we run through the key storylines ahead of the second round of fixtures, as well as providing our predictions for the weekend’s action.

Scotland v France (Saturday, 14:15)

Scotland got the job done last week, with a blistering start ultimately enough for their first win in Cardiff for 22 years, but Gregor Townsend’s side didn’t do it the easy way.

Scotland raced into a 27-0 lead within 43 minutes as Finn Russell starred at the Principality Stadium, but a stunning second-half display saw Wales cut the deficit to 27-26.

Ill discipline almost cost Scotland in the second half as they gave up 14 successive penalties, but they clung on in a nail-biting finale to avoid a humiliating collapse.

Better will surely be required when they host France, though Les Bleus sorely missed Antoine Dupont in their 38-17 loss to Ireland last week. If they are to have any hope of recapturing the Six Nations crown they lost last year, France simply must respond on Saturday.

Paul Willemse is suspended for the trip to Edinburgh following his red card last week, prompting Fabien Galthie to introduce Cameron Woki into the second row. Louis Bielle-Biarrey has also been drafted in on the left wing, but Galthie has kept faith with Maxime Lucu after he struggled to replicate Dupont’s dynamism last week.

While Ireland have marked themselves out as the team to beat, Saturday’s early kick-off could tell us much about the identity of their main rivals.

England v Wales (Saturday, 16:15)

Saturday’s late kick-off sees England face old rivals Wales, with the hosts looking to step things up after their nervy 27-24 win in Italy.

Borthwick’s side fell behind in their opener, but a dominant second-half performance ensured they got off to a winning start as debutants Fraser Dingwall and Ethan Roots impressed.

Following a turbulent build-up to the tournament, Borthwick handed out five debuts in total, with Fin Smith, Chandler Cunningham-South and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso also making their Test bows off the bench.

Borthwick’s new-look team may not have been wholly convincing last time out, but a victory over Wales would certainly raise expectations, particularly with England set to enjoy home advantage against Ireland in round four.

Wales, though, will be dangerous opponents, as they proved by refusing to go away against Scotland last week.

In the eyes of England scrum-half Danny Care, Warren Gatland’s side have nothing to lose at Twickenham.

“They have some young lads full of talent coming to Twickenham to play their first game,” Care told BBC Sport. “They are a young team with nothing to lose or nothing to fear. We respect them.

“This is the game you want to play in and you want your friends and family there to make them proud. Every time you play against Wales it is an incredible Test match, really physical and feisty.”

Gatland has rung the changes to the trip to London, with fit-again centre George North among seven players introduced into the starting XV, which features an entirely new front row. England, meanwhile, are unchanged.

Ireland v Italy (Sunday, 15:00)

The winner of France’s meeting with Ireland was always likely to be touted as the tournament favourites, but the manner in which Andy Farrell’s men dispatched Les Bleus surprised everyone.

Ireland’s 21-point triumph in Paris was their biggest on French soil since a 24-0 win in 1913, while their tally of 38 points was their best ever against France.

It’s little surprise, then, that Ireland are now being tipped to repeat last year’s Grand Slam. They will certainly be expected to make it two wins from two games against Italy, who have won one of their 41 Six Nations games since 2015.

However, Irish back row Jack Conan will not be taking anything for granted at the Aviva Stadium, having been impressed by Italy’s performance in their narrow defeat to England.

“Italy play with so much passion and emotion and they’re now bringing that accuracy as well,” he said. “They’re so close to getting a few big scalps. You can see it when they play.

“They were unlucky against England but we’ve got to do everything in our power to stop them.

“We’re nearly expecting a tougher defensive challenge this weekend than what we had previously so we’re going to have to be on it from minute one.”

How to watch

Every game of the Six Nations will be shown by either the BBC or ITV in the UK. Scotland’s game against France on Saturday will be screened on BBC One, with ITV1 showing the weekend’s other fixtures.

Predictions

While we expect Ireland to keep their Grand Slam hopes alive with a dominant win over Italy, Saturday’s games should be close-run affairs.

Scotland will certainly push France all the way amid questions over Les Bleus’ ability to cope without Dupont. However, Scotland have seen lock Richie Gray and back rower Luke Crosbie ruled out for the remainder of the tournament in a major double blow, so we’re still siding with France.

Expect Wales to give another spirited performance at Twickenham, but England should have enough about them to make it two from two.

Manchester’s Tyler Grange undergoes significant restructure

Manchester environmental consultancy Tyler Grange has appointed a new managing director.

Jon Berry (pictured left) supersedes Simon Ursell (pictured centre) who becomes chair of the firm.

Jon – previously sales director at Places & Purpose – is now responsible for developing the consultancy’s commercial, people and ESG strategies and leading its 100+ strong nationwide team.

Within his remit is ensuring that the disruptive business continues to operate as efficiently, effectively and productively as possible.

Simon Ursell aims to further develops his non-executive portfolio. He’s now working with purpose-driven business owners and leaders to embed transformational change that will make a tangible difference in the success of their business, their people, and their own leadership.

Simon, Julian and I co-founded the business and we’ve worked very closely together, and supported each other, ever since. I have no doubt that this will continue and we’re all very much looking forward to the new roles and dynamics that our restructure brings.”

Tyson Fury date for Oleksandr Usyk fight is ‘deadest deadline’

Tyson Fury’s undisputed heavyweight title fight against Oleksandr Usyk will not take place if the Briton is not fit for the rearranged date of May 18, the Ukrainian’s promoter has warned.

WBC champion Fury had been scheduled to face Usyk in Saudi Arabia on February 17 but withdrew from the fight on Friday after suffering a cut in sparring.

The IBF, which is one of the sanctioning bodies whose titles Usyk holds alongside the WBA and WBO straps, has allowed a 90-day extension for Usyk to defend his belt.

“If it doesn’t happen on May 29, it will never happen because of the IBF issue,” Alex Krassyuk told Boxing News.

“The passage is limited and that’s why we have May the 18th as the deadest deadline for the undisputed fight to take place.”

Turki Al-Sheikh, the Chairman of fight organisers the General Entertainment Authority in Saudi Arabia, arranged the new date within 24 hours of Fury, 35, revealing the deep cut above his right eye which required stitching and has left him unable to take on Usyk this month.

The postponement at two weeks’ notice is the third time since 2023 that the fight has been rearranged, and Usyk had entered talks over a mandatory IBF defence against Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic on February 17 before the new date for his fight with Fury was announced.

The withdrawal immediately led to speculation that Fury will never meet Usyk and could even retire, although the fighter known as ‘The Gypsy King’ described himself as “absolutely devastated” in a statement and has reacted scathingly to criticism from his opponent’s camp.

Al-Sheikh has emphasised the finality of the date and said he has guarantees from both fighters that they will forfeit £9.3 million if they fail to take part in a bout which would decide the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era.

“You have so many fans around the world – people follow you,” Krassyuk said when he was asked for a message to Fury.

“Please, don’t lead them along the wrong path. So many kids are watching you and seeing an example.

“Behave yourself. Recover, get back to work, work hard – we want you in the best possible shape.”

Former Manchester United midfielder Lingard excited by South Korea switch

Jesse Lingard is confident South Korea is the “perfect place” for him to reignite his career.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder yesterday signed a two-year deal with an option for a third with FC Seoul.

Lingard had been without a club following the expiration of a 12-month deal at Nottingham Forest at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old claims to have been inundated with offers but wanted a “different challenge” away from Europe and believes a move to the Far East is the answer.

Speaking in a YouTube video, he said: “I’ve always wanted a different challenge and to create new memories in my career.

“I believe South Korea is the perfect place for that.”

Lingard said the K-League club’s determination to sign him persuaded him to make the move, adding at his presentation: “FC Seoul showed me great passion, sending me a concrete offer on paper while other clubs were contacting me verbally.

“They also came to Manchester to check my physical condition as well.

“I am excited to represent the K-League as soon as possible by playing good football and showing dedication to my new team.

“I am looking forward to meeting coach Kim Gidong and to making an impact in the team.”

Lingard came through the academy at Manchester United and made 232 appearances for the club. A successful loan spell at West Ham failed to result in a permanent contract in east London, prompting a switch to Forest where he struggled for form in 20 appearances.

Frank clarifies comments regarding reported Manchester United target Toney

Thomas Frank has clarified comments he is reported to have made yesterday regarding the future of striker Ivan Toney.

The quotes suggested Frank believed the England international would be sold at the end of the season – his contract expires in the summer of 2025 – but he insisted today that is just one avenue open to the club.

Toney was this morning heavily linked with a summer move to Manchester United, with Arsenal and Chelsea also thought to be interested.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wolves, Frank said: “You always have to be aware of translation. Google translate is not always the best.

“It’s the same message I said the whole time. I would love him to stay forever, but the reality is he has one year left on his contract in the summer.

“I think he’s been pretty open about maybe playing for a top club in the future, so I think there are a couple of scenarios; he leaves in the summer, leaves in the winter or he stays.

“If he leaves whenever it will be fantastic to see him playing for a top club.”

With Toney suspended until January due to breaches of betting regulations, Brentford have struggled this season and sit just three points above the relegation zone.

Frank accepts his team have underperformed, particularly defensively, but is confident they have turned a corner.

He added: “I like to win football matches, I’m very aware that the stats on paper are not great.

“We look into our performances and especially the last three have been very positive. We beat Nottingham [Forest] and lost to two of the best teams in the world; Tottenham and Manchester City.

“We did a lot of things right and we need to look into that but we also need to look into what we can do better.

“Defending has been a big focus since I took over five years ago and we were a free floating Championship side.

“We are conceding too many goals in my opinion. We need to look into what we can do to avoiding conceding goals. We are going in the right direction.”

A group of men threatened some teenage boys to hand over their mobiles in the Arndale Centre.

Police received the report at around 6.15pm yesterday.

From initial enquiries, it is believed that four men approached a group of four teenage boys and threatened them with violence before instructing them to hand over their mobile phones, along with two bottles of cologne.

No injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made yet. Investigating officers are now asking for the public’s assistance.

DC Dahill-Rowan said: “We have now reached a stage in our investigation where we are looking to identify and speak to the men in the CCTV images (pictured) as we believe they could assist with enquiries.

“Thankfully, no one was injured, but it has understandably left the victims shaken and will cause concern in the community.

“Anyone with information should contact officers via 0161 856 6164 log 2331 7/1/2024 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
