Six Nations 2024: England squad vs Scotland as Tuilagi returns from injury

Manu Tuilagi has returned to the England Six Nations squad for the match against Scotland at Murrayfield on February 24.

Sale’s Tuilagi has been absent with a groin injury since December which kept him out of his country’s initial Six Nations squad.

Hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and lock George Martin have also rejoined the squad and are back in contention, while centre Ollie Lawrence and fly-half Marcus Smith are part of the group as they continue their comebacks from injury.

Tuilagi suffered a great three tear while playing for his club and has had six weeks of rehabilitation.

The powerful 32-year-old’s issue was less severe than a previous groin problem he sustained but it caused him to miss England’s win over Italy in Rome on February 3 and narrow victory over Wales at Twickenham on Saturday.

Cowan-Dickie and Martin also missed England’s first two matches of the Six Nations.

Six Nations 2024: Fallow week ‘important’ for England

Captain Jamie George spoke of the need for Steve Borthwick’s side to make the most of the first fallow week of the tournament following their clash with Wales.

“The most important thing for us now is that we don’t get ahead of ourselves,” warned George.

“The fallow week is very important because we have a great opportunity to rest up for a bit and then really focus on what we need to do to get better.

“We felt a huge amount of pride and noise coming from the stands and that’s what we love. That’s the sort of thing that we wanted to do and that’s just the first step.”

Borthwick praised the depth of his squad. “I always sensed in the players a confidence that we would find a way to get the result and I thought the wider squad played a big role in getting that win,” he said.

England’s next home game is against Ireland on March 9.

Despite these challenges, Logitech aims to limit the sales decrease for the 2024 fiscal year to 6-7%, ranging from $4.2-4.25 billion. Operating profit is forecasted to grow by 4-12% to $610-660 million, surpassing the earlier expectation of $525-575 million.

Logitech acknowledges that customers grapple with high inflation and economic uncertainty, as offices undergo re-equipment for the hybrid work model. Since the report’s release, the company has seen a 10% decrease in its value.

Nevertheless, Logitech remains committed to improving user experiences, fostering user-friendly interfaces, and broadening its product portfolio. The company’s global market presence is expanding with the establishment of new representative offices, attracting funds and investor interest. The five-match series is beautifully poised at 1-1 – England winning the opener in Hyderabad before India hit back in the most recent encounter.

England, under coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, have adopted an all-out attacking approach which has reaped its rewards.

But Jadeja is confident India have worked the tourists out and believes they will show it over the next few days.

“In all these years, whichever team has come they have not found it easy to come to India, play on the Indian wickets and win in Indian conditions,” he said.

“It is not that England are difficult to beat but they play with a different style and it takes some time to understand that. Once you understand that, it becomes easier what to do.

“That is their style. We need to have a plan B and set fields accordingly and bowl to it. We have to do the opposite to what they are doing.”

Jadeja will again form half of a potent-looking spin duo with Ravichandran Ashwin, who is one wicket short of 500 in Test cricket.

“He will definitely complete his 500 wickets on this ground,” Jadeja added. 

“I am very excited because I have been playing with him for 12 or 13 years and to achieve this milestone of completing 500 Test wickets is a really big thing.

“I thought he would complete it in the first Test but it’s okay, it is written in destiny he will complete his 500 wickets in Rajkot, in my home town.”

At 35, Jadeja is now a veteran of the India side and he said he will need to tread carefully in Rajkot to protect his troublesome hamstring.

“We have the same excitement, and play with the same pride,” he said. “The idea is to give 100 per cent but protect my body. Try not to dive unless absolutely necessary.

“As far as my fielding is concerned, I cannot hide and field. I am always in the hotspot irrespective of the format. So that could also be a reason that the ball comes to me too often. The team expects me to grab a good catch, and affect a run out.

“I can work a little more smartly on my body and if I can do that I don’t think there’ll be any problems as such. Then again, there’s no guarantee. I can go out tomorrow and get injured again. You never know.”

Speaking for the first time this morning, at the unveiling of Mercedes’ new W15 car, the 39-year-old said: “It’s obviously been emotional, it’s very surreal to be here. I came here in 2013, 11 years with the team, starting my 12th. 

“It is such a privilege to work with a group of people where you see the work they’re doing over the winter. You see a car coming together at the beginning of the year.”

Even though he is soon to depart, Hamilton couldn’t hide his excitement at fulfilling the 2024 season with Mercedes alongside George Russell.

“This is the most exciting part of the season really,” he added. 

“You’re seeing everyone’s launches, this is the first time I’ve seen the car come together as a whole. To know everything underneath the hood, which people won’t get to see, but George and I will be able to experience on the track. It’s exciting.”

Mercedes finished second in the Constructors’ Championship standings last season, a whopping 451 points behind runaway leaders Red Bull.

Team principal Toto Wolff is confident the German marque can continue to be the ‘best of the rest’ while backing the Hamilton-Russell combination to shine.

“Our aim is to consolidate our position to Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin. At the same time, race at the very front,” he said.

“What is it we got wrong? Why did the virtual world not correlate with the real world? The buzz in the company is something I haven’t seen in years. We know it’s a big mountain to climb. We have the best driver combination, hopefully the best car.”

University of Salford to host ‘Innovation Labs’ to boost business potential

The University of Salford is hosting a three-day innovation design sprint, to allow business leaders to explore and progress their pioneering projects.

Run by Salford Business School’s Centre for Sustainable Innovation (CSI), there will be several cohorts to join, with the first sessions taking place on February 26, 27 and 28 .

The CSI is designed to allow businesses access to academic expertise to help shape their projects.

The programme will be delivered in partnership with The Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub, and hosted on the University’s Fredrick Road campus.

Over three days, participants will get to understand the innovation process, and be equipped with tools to analyse the markets and identify opportunities.

By the final day, all participants will be connected with the expertise to help apply their innovation idea, as well as identify potential routes for additional funding.

Dr Ann Mulhaney, associate professor at Salford Business School, said: “This is a great opportunity for businesses in the Greater Manchester region to explore ideas, aided by our expert team of consultants and commercialisation specialists.

“At the CSI, we focus on three core areas of innovation: the potential around the sustainability agenda and net zero, digital transformation projects and change management. The event is a chance to collaborate with other businesses and connect with experts to help you explore and implement innovative project ideas.”

Yvonne Grady, head of innovation at the Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub, said: “We recognise how important it is for businesses to have the space and time to properly think through their innovation ideas. It’s also a chance for participants to connect with experts, and explore the University’s world-leading facilities.”

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol will be out for “two or three weeks” with an ankle ligament problem, manager Pep Guardiola says.

Gvardiol, who became the world’s most expensive defender when he joined City for £77.6 million from RB Leipzig in August, missed the Uefa Champions League holders’ 3-1 win at Copenhagen in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

The 22-year-old has started 16 of City’s 24 matches in the Premier League this season but was an unused substitute in their 2-0 home win over Everton on Saturday.

Gvardiol could be unavailable for six games including the Manchester derby on March 3 and the return match with the Danish side three days later, but the Cityzens will hope he is back for their trip to Liverpool on March 10.

Fellow summer signing and Croatia international Mateo Kovacic is closer to being in contention and could feature when Chelsea visit Etihad Stadium in the top flight on Saturday, Guardiola said.

Kovacic was not part of the squad in Copenhagen or against the Toffees and played only seven minutes of City’s previous two matches.

“Kova is in the process to come back,” said Guardiola. “Thursday or Friday he will train with us and we will see how he feels.

“Unfortunately, now with the schedule we have we need players fit. Every game and training session we lose players, and that is not good.”

Young people’s bereavement charity Winston’s Wish is calling upon local communities to join ‘Wear Wellies Day’ on February 29.

This leap year, schools, workplaces and community groups are invited to turn puddles into playgrounds and don their wellies for a day of fundraising in aid of the charity.

The ask is simple, donate to wear wellies for a day and take on puddle themed fundraising
activities all to help local bereaved children and young people.

As well as providing a fun initiative to get behind this February, wearing wellies is also a
significant way of reminding people how grief is often presented in young children.

‘Puddle jumping’ is a term that is used by bereavement professionals to explain how children often seem to ‘puddle jump’ in and out of their grief, one minute presenting unfazed by their bereavement and the next struggling with their emotions.

Estimates suggest that every day, more than 100 children in the UK are bereaved of a parent and that figure doesn’t equate how many young people are coping with the death of a sibling, grandparent, friend, or another significant individual in their lives.

Wear Wellies has gained considerable traction in the last few years with schools,
corporations, and youth groups from all over the UK donning their wellies and making a
splash for charity.

Winston’s Wish director of fundraising, Paul Moore said: “I’ve taken part in the
event myself so I know how much fun it is however it’s also a day that is filled with hope, love and support for those coming to terms with life following bereavement.

“With more young people turning to us for support than ever before, we’d love you to join us in raising funds so that no child or young person has to face grief alone.”

As well as providing direct support to young people and creating a range of digital resources, from podcasts to advice articles, the charity also provides free support to professionals working in education, healthcare, and community settings to assist bereaved children.

Green energy test bed to launch in Greater Manchester

SSE Energy Solutions has signed an agreement with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) to use the region as a test bed for pioneering projects which will accelerate its journey to net zero.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) announced on Monday, will see the mass deployment of investment in the decarbonisation of power, heat, and transport across Greater Manchester, as well as helping to create a ‘green skills workforce’ with long-term, high-quality careers in the low carbon sector.

The five-year MOU will also seek to strengthen research and innovation clusters, building an ecosystem that connects people, ideas, and sectors to accelerate green energy projects, including ground and roof solar arrays, low carbon district heat networks, and EV and e-HGV charging hubs.

SSE has already developed strong relationships with key stakeholders in the region, including the Green Skills Academy, Manchester Metropolitan University’s Fuel Cell Innovation Centre, and Greater Manchester’s Energy Innovation Agency. This multi-sector collaboration supports companies working in areas such as smart building technology, energy efficiency, and EV charging infrastructure.

The GMCA has set an ambitious target to achieve net zero by 2038. Meanwhile, SSE has increased clean energy investments by 65% to a total of £20.5bn by 2027 and is spending more than £10m a day to unleash the low-carbon infrastructure that the UK needs for its net zero transition.

Neil Kirkby, managing director of Enterprise at SSE Energy Solutions (pictured right) said: “If we are to reach our net zero targets here in the UK, we are going to need a workforce skilled to fill the STEM jobs that will be needed to facilitate the transition to renewable energy. Secondly, we need to ensure we take the public on the journey with us.

“We believe strongly in a just and fair transition to net zero and decarbonising the country presents opportunities to support communities with regeneration, economic investment, and the creation of sustainable, long-term jobs.

“This agreement with the GMCA means we can work together to deliver innovative green energy projects, designed and built by local people who will directly benefit from them. This is exactly what the Social Value strategy we have here at SSE is all about.”

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, (pictured left) said: “The green transition presents a massive opportunity to reindustrialise places like Greater Manchester. We want our economy to prosper, and our target is to become a carbon neutral city-region by 2038 – growing our low carbon industries can help us to do both.

“To realise our ambitions, we need to build relationships with partners in industry. This agreement will see us work closely with SSE Energy Solutions to find mutual benefits in a wide range of areas, including clean energy projects, careers and skills development, and research and innovation.”
