Boycott believes England should move on from Lancashire ace Anderson

0

England can’t keep picking James Anderson “on sentiment forever”, according to Geoff Boycott.

Anderson became the first seam bowler to reach 700 wickets in Test cricket on England’s recent tour of India but was used in short spells, partly due to the state of the spin-friendly pitches.

Nevertheless, Boycott thinks it’s time England moved on from the Lancashire man and targeted younger, more robust bowlers to go to Australia at the end of next year.

He wrote in the Telegraph: “Jimmy Anderson deserves all the adulation and plaudits for staying fit to play 187 Test matches and reach 700 wickets but, because of his age, he is used too sparingly.

“England cannot keep wrapping him in cotton wool and picking him on sentiment forever. In a year-and-a-half England’s next big challenge will be going to Australia to try and win back the Ashes.

“Fast bowling is physically very demanding and eventually takes its toll on every bowler’s body. Jimmy will be 43 by the next Ashes and I don’t see him being able to do the hard yards on tough, bone hard pitches and in hot weather.

“Jimmy remains a great craftsman and he can give experience at one end while some new boys get bedded in at the other but before the Australia trip it will be time to nicely say ‘sayonara Jimmy, thank you for the memories. We have loved watching your skill but it is time to move on’.”

Anderson’s departure from the international scene – whenever it comes – will inevitably leave an enormous hole in England’s attack but Boycott is confident there are players on the county circuit that deserve a chance.

He added: “England have to find some young seamers who can bowl 20 overs and come back the next day ready for more.

“They need to be given matches before the team is selected for Australia. For example, Josh Tongue played at Lord’s against Australia and took five wickets and has never been seen again. Matt Potts 23 wickets in six Tests but has not played since the Ireland game last summer.”

How Manchester businesses can maximise digital ad efficiency during a recession

In times of economic downturn, many online Manchester businesses face the challenge of staying profitable.

This can be difficult as consumer behaviour shifts during an economic downturn, this leads to reduced consumer spending and a more risk-averse outlook to outlandish purchases.

Since the post-COVID boom in online spend, a lot of businesses are still facing higher cost per clicks, more competition, but now with less demand.

The city’s digital ecosystem, supported by initiatives outlined in the Manchester Digital Strategy 2021 – 2026, offers resources and a network of support that local businesses can harness. It’s worth reading and provides insight into how Manchester plans to support digital businesses in the future. The rest of this article will dive into practical approaches to stay profitable during this period.

Being smart about your digital strategy

During lockdown, everyone was inside and on the internet. This was especially true for ecommerce brands who were perfectly equipped to support this change. During this period many brands doubled, or even tripled yearly turnover and cash was easy to come by.

The mindset was ‘scale, scale, scale’, however having that same mindset now will most likely put you in trouble. The focus now is on being lean and profitable. On the flipside you can’t just turn your ads off otherwise your revenue will drop, so ultimately the key is to be smart about where you end up investing your resources.

Prioritising high-ROI channels

Ultimately your goal is a business is to make a profit. One of the great features of digital advertising platforms such as Google ads and Facebook ads is that you can see exactly how much you’re spending, your conversions and revenue.

This means you have the data to turn keywords, ads, campaigns and even whole channels off if they’re not working. A lot of people can get shiny object syndrome, testing Tik Tok Ads, Snapchat, YouTube but this isn’t always the best use of resource.

Ted Parry of Amoredigital.co.uk who runs a boutique Manchester PPC Agency said: “The key right now is to really hone in on which channels are working for your business right now. If you’ve been testing a channel for a while and it’s not been working, now is the time to keep the focus on channels that are tried and tested. When cash is tight that may even mean focusing on servicing your existing customers more, and focusing on highly profitable remarketing segments across Google ads and Meta ads.”

Redistributing funds to campaigns that have a history of strong performance or potentially higher margins can lead to more efficient use of scarce resources. You can then look to test newer channels once the economic conditions pick up.

Get a digital marketing audit

If there ever was a time to get a digital marketing audit that time would be now. Even though you will be paying upfront, it will pay dividends long term. If you’re running Google Ads for example it would be advised you work with a Google Ads specialist who understands the platform inside and out.

The audit should uncover:

  • Where you’re wasting spend at each level
  • Which landing pages aren’t converting and how to improve them
  • Which channels you need to focus on
  • Advice on how to tweak your bid strategies

Out of all the industries’ ecommerce ppc has a lot of different moving parts, different channels and types of targeting you can run. This is one area we advise enlisting someone to help you see the woods from the trees.

Improve landing page conversion

When cost per clicks rise, and demand drops across the board, there’s no doubt one the highest ROI activities you can undertake is to improve your current website. By improving your website’s conversion rate you’ll essentially be getting more revenue for your business while keeping your spend exactly the same.

Bridget Louile who runs ITQ Digital said: ”If you improve your overall sitewide conversion rate of 1% to 1.5% you will be getting 50% more customers for exactly the same budget. This means that if you have to be lean, then you can be more profitable even in spite of lower spend. It also means that when the economy picks up you’ll be in a much stronger position to take advantage.”

Lean on machine learning to help

The days of doing manual cost per click bidding changes on Google ads is over. Google and Facebook are now very machine-learning heavy. This means that you will say you are willing to spend £30 max per conversion, and it will go out there to look for customers who can be acquired at this cost. That often means going after less competitive keywords, and keywords that historically work well for your business.

One of the downsides however is that if you’re too conservative it means the platforms will spend less because they don’t think they can acquire customers at that cost. So it’s always worth being realistic to what you can afford to spend to acquire a customer.

Look to outsource

In times of economic tightening a lot of companies look to downsize or look to cut costs, which is understandable. If you’ve downweighted your core team it means you may be more stretched. However one of the solutions may be to look at outsourcing. Outsourcing your digital marketing enables you to be more flexible as often the price you pay will be linked to your ad spend, less ad spend = less fee for your business.

One other thing to note is that some companies can be allured by very large agencies who send in suited and booted sales teams with flowers and chocolate to woo you. However, the reality is if your ad spend is less than £5,000 per month, it’s likely you’ll be treated at the bottom of their totem ranking … while also paying extortionate fees. If you’re looking at cutting your budget then it could make sense to go for a more boutique agency or individual consultant, it’s likely you’ll get more time into your account and the relationship overall.

Conclusion

The reality is what worked yesterday may not yield the same results tomorrow. Businesses that become adept at quickly pivoting and adopting innovative advertising practices in response to the real-time climate will stand a greater chance of thriving during the recession. Staying lean, enlisting the help of domain experts, and serving your existing customers will put you in a much stronger position on the other side.

Six Nations 2024: Wales centre North to quit international rugby

Wales centre George North will retire from international rugby following Saturday’s Six Nations clash with Italy in Cardiff.

The 31-year-old is set to make his 121st appearance for Wales at the weekend and will step away as his country’s third most capped player behind Alun Wyn Jones and Gethin Jenkins.

He wrote on X: “I have decided that the game on Saturday will bring my international career to an end.

“After 14 years it feels like now is the right time to step away. I have loved and cherished every second in a Welsh shirt and been able to play alongside some fantastic team-mates.

“I am very lucky to have lived my dream. I’m excited for the next chapter. Thank you for all the support over the years.”

North was dropped for Wales’ defeat to France last weekend but returns to the squad to face the Azzurri.

And although he is quitting Wales duty, he will continue his club career in France for Provence next season.

Wales coach Warren Gatland said: “George has contributed hugely to Welsh rugby, in an incredible career starting as an 18-year-old.

“The way that he burst onto the scene. I can remember seeing him play and thinking we need to cap this kid.

“He’s been incredible as a rugby player, but I think the most important thing is how he’s contributed to the squad as a person over the years. How positive and encouraging he’s been within and around the group, things that people wouldn’t have seen in terms of what he’s organised off the field.

“George has been outstanding and a credit to himself. He can definitely hold his head high. He and his family and friends can be very proud of everything he has achieved.”

£300,000 win for projects to help reach net zero

0

Major funding has been awarded to tackle decarbonisation and energy resilience challenges across the North West.

Engineers from Electricity North West will use the £300,000 funding to carry out feasibility studies into two potential ground-breaking projects which will help accelerate the region to net zero.

The power network operator will explore these in detail with the aim of bringing huge cost and carbon savings to residents and businesses in the region.

Funding has been secured from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) of which in the last 12 months, Electricity North West has been awarded more than £1.4m to develop and research other net zero projects it has which are still ongoing.

World-leading technology

Victoria Turnham, Electricity North West’s head of network innovation, said: “We’ve got a track record of developing world-leading technology right here in the North West, so it’s great to be recognised again with more funding.

“The way people use electricity in the North West is changing and we’re seeing more customers and businesses adopt low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles.

“It’s our role to ensure the network is ready and as one of the most digital electricity networks in the world, we need to constantly look at ways to operate more smartly and efficiently.

“Both projects could provide major benefits to customers and businesses in the region, and I look forward to seeing the results.”

One project, CoolDown, will explore the impact of increasing use of air conditioning in homes and offices and the impact on the power network. The project will explore the opportunities for flexibility to help balance electricity demand throughout the day.

This will reduce the requirements for additional expensive infrastructure. Electricity North West will deliver this project in conjunction with Guidehouse Europe and UCL Consultants Ltd.

A second project, LDES NODE, will analyse different types of technology, such as pumped hydro, hydrogen, compressed air and batteries to assist with long-duration energy storage (LDES).

Once assessing the different types of technologies, the project will identify areas on the network where technology could sit, and a map of optimum locations would be created.

Local authorities will benefit from integrating the tool in their Local Area Energy Plans (LAEPs). It will provide data-driven insights into key locations for LDES installation, aligning with broader net-zero energy plans. Electricity North West will deliver this project in conjunction with Environmental Resources Management.

These projects are funded by energy network users and consumers through the Strategic Innovation Fund, a programme from the UK’s independent energy regulator Ofgem and managed in partnership with Innovate UK.

Cheltenham Festival 2024: Shishkin pulled from the Gold Cup as Henderson’s woes continue

0

Shishkin has been withdrawn from Friday’s Gold Cup following an “unsatisfactory picture” on a scoping to continue trainer Nicky Henderson’s disappointing Cheltenham Festival.

Henderson was last week forced to pull favourite Constitution Hill from the Champion Hurdle due to a lung infection and he will have at least three more non-runners today, as well as Champ tomorrow and Shishkin on Friday.

Five of Henderson’s six horses failed to finish their races on the festival’s opening day yesterday, including Jeriko Du Reponet and Iberico Lord, and he admits he is puzzled by his stable’s current issues.

He said in a statement on X: “I’m afraid we’ve had to make some very tough decisions following the very disappointing performances of all bar one of our horses yesterday.

“It was there for all to see that there’s obviously something affecting nearly all our horses and consequently we have reluctantly decided that Jonbon, First Street and Kingston Pride will not run today.

“It’s impossible to identify any reason for all the disappointments and none of these three horses have given us any cause for concern and all yesterday’s runners were scoped clean post-race and I’m glad to say all are sound this morning. There will unfortunately be further non-runners on Thursday and Friday.

“I hope everybody will appreciate that we have to do this in everybody’s interests, particularly the horses. It is very, very disappointing for everybody.”

Henderson released a second statement shortly after that confirmed one of the other non-runners would be Shishkin.

He said: “Very sadly it won’t be possible for Shishkin to run in the Gold Cup on Friday. He was scoped as have all our potential runners this week, but unfortunately he’s shown an unsatisfactory picture on which he couldn’t possibly run.

“He appears to be 100 per cent in himself and has been working and schooling better than ever and we really were looking forward to Friday. It’s hoped that along with all the other non-participants this week that they will be back in time for Aintree or Punchestown.

“Regrettably Champ has also succumbed and will not run in tomorrow’s Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle and the equivalent race at Aintree could be on the agenda.”

Made Smarter empowers 125 digital leaders

Made Smarter has selected 125 people to become ‘digital leaders’ via its innovative leadership programmes.

The participants enjoy varying manufacturing roles, from managers to production operatives.

Made Smarter is a government-funded industry-led initiative to increase technology adoption among SME manufacturers, offering funded access to its Leading Digital Transformation (LDT) programme and Leading Change for Digital Champions (LCDC) programmes.

LDT programme

LDT is delivered over three months with Manchester Metropolitan University. It blends face-to-face workshops, online webinars, case studies to see technology in action, and a site visit to PrintCity, Manchester Met’s 3D additive and digital manufacturing centre.

Since last year, the programme turned 34 delegates into digitally-informed, empowered leaders, with bespoke digitalisation strategies.

The latest companies to graduate from the LDT include are Colour Synthesis Solutions in Manchester and Massey & Harris in Stockport.

LCDC programme

LCDC is delivered using a bite-size, blended approach consisting of two face-to-face workshops, online coaching, a site visit to an SME manufacturer to see the impact of digital change first-hand, as well as a chance to see the latest digital technologies at an Amazon fulfilment centre.

The programme has so far created a network of 29 advocates to guide others and support the impactful and lasting changes digital technologies will bring.

This is in addition to the 62 business leaders equipped with new digital skills through Made Smarter’s trailblazing leadership initiative run between 2019 and 2023.

Manufacturers across the North West are now being encouraged to register their interest for the next series of programmes.

Alison Brooks, business manager at Massey & Harris, a playground equipment manufacturer, said: “The belief and confidence I have walked away with, both professionally and personally, is quite something. The programme was well led, engaging, full of useful information, and a real source for inspiration.

“Any fears I had about the programme being too technical disappeared from the first session and I was hooked. I was able to quickly ascertain where we were as a company, why we had previously failed in leading change, what we needed to do, when, and how. I was also able to implement changes immediately, improving communications and increasing the buy-in for the changes in the pipeline.

“I also really benefited from learning from her peers and visiting their factories. Although we are all at different stages, it is comforting that we share the challenges.”

Since launching in 2019 Made Smarter has supported 2,500 manufacturers in the North West to access expert, impartial technology advice, digital transformation workshops to help take that first step to transform a business, and support with technology adoption projects. It has also supported 284 businesses with skills and leadership advice and training.

Ruth Hailwood, Made Smarter’s organisation and workforce development specialist adviser, said: “Our Leading Digital Transformation programme and Leading Change for Digital Champions programmes work hand in hand to support SME manufacturers to take their entire organisation and people through digital transformation successfully and maximise the opportunities for their business.

“Ultimately, accelerating changes to leadership and skills within the industry, especially with SMEs, will make the biggest difference to achieving successful digital transformation and reaping the benefits for UK manufacturing economically, socially and environmentally.”

Six Nations 2024: Feyi-Waboso out of England-France finale

England have suffered a blow ahead of Saturday’s Six Nations finale against France, with wing Immanuel Feyi-Waboso ruled out with a concussion.

Feyi-Waboso was handed his full Test debut in last week’s thrilling 23-22 win over Ireland at Twickenham, playing a key role as Andy Farrell’s visitors saw their hopes of back-to-back Grand Slams ended.

The Exeter Chiefs wing played on after receiving a knock to his head in that game, making a crucial carry in the build-up to Marcus Smith’s match-winning drop-goal.

He reported concussion symptoms on Monday and will now miss this weekend’s trip to Lyon, where he would likely have started.

England attack coach Richard Wigglesworth said of Feyi-Waboso’s condition: “Manny felt a bit groggy, so he is unfortunately ruled out of the game. We don’t take any risks with that stuff.

“There was no major incident. He had a knock and didn’t feel quite right, so he reported the symptoms and then was removed accordingly.

“He’s obviously gutted, but being the smart lad he is, he reported his symptoms. He did the right thing.”

Elliot Daly is viewed as the most likely player to replace Feyi-Waboso out wide, having started the first three games of England’s Six Nations campaign.

England will know whether their hopes of a first Six Nations title since 2020 remain alive by the time their final match kicks off on Saturday evening.

Steve Borthwick’s team face a tall order to reclaim the crown, though, needing a bonus-point win over Les Bleus as well as a major slip-up from Ireland, who will retain the title with a home win over Scotland in Saturday’s second match.
