Manchester United: Erik Ten Hag keen to make ‘new improvements’ this summer

Erik ten Hag says there is work to be done in the transfer market if Manchester United are to be competitive in the Premier League next season.

The Red Devils have fallen short of expectations this season, but could still salvage the campaign with an FA Cup final triumph over rivals Manchester City.

For now though, Ten Hag is looking ahead to the final four games in the top flight, starting with a trip to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

United spent over £150million on Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Mason Mount in the summer but will end the campaign lower down the table than they did in 2022-23.

And Ten Hag is expecting a busy few months off the pitch, if he remains at Carrington.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, he said: “[There’s] always a lot of work, it’s normal when you go into a transfer window, but the injuries had a big impact.

“We know also we are still below the levels from the expectations Manchester United has so we have to catch up and I’m now going into my fifth window

“Two windows were quite OK, two we missed – so we have to make new improvements to the squad. But there is a base of this squad that is very good.”

Jadon Sancho is one of the names that has not lived up to expectations in Ten Hag’s tenure but the England international stood out for Borussia Dortmund during their 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old had a public falling out with the ex-Ajax boss and has been shoved out of the door – albeit on loan for now – however Ten Hag is refusing to close the door on a potential reunion.

He added: “So let’s say this: yesterday he played very good and he’s a very good player.

“Yesterday he showed why Manchester United bought him and he showed he represents a high value for Manchester United, which is good.

“I’m happy for Jadon, for the performance yesterday, and we’ll see what is going to happen in the future.”

United must win at Selhurst Park to keep their hopes of finishing in the top five alive in the final few weeks.

But they may travel to South London without captain Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial.

Ten Hag gave an injury update ahead of the game, saying: “Scott [McTominay] didn’t train so far this week but I expect him back in training on Saturday and we have to see if he’s 100% available or for a part of the game.

“After the game [against Burnley], we had an issue with Bruno [Fernandes].

“He is a doubt for Monday. We all know Bruno, never rule him out for any game. He will do his best to be available.

“Jonny Evans returned today for team training. Tomorrow we are off and then two days until the game. [Anthony] Martial was partly in team training.”

Ryan Garcia denies taking steriods after positive test results

Ryan Garcia has released a statement saying he has never taken steroids despite returning positive tests.

The WBC confirmed it has been notified by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association that the 25-year-old returned “adverse findings” from a sample taken in April.

Samples were reportedly taken the day of his win over Devin Haney but the results did not arrive until afterwards.

Garcia knocked Haney down three times in the shock victory, but was not handed the WBC light-welterweight title after missing weight.

On social media platform X, he said: “Everybody knows that I don’t cheat.

“Never taken a steroid, I don’t even know where to get steroids.

“I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat him.”

Reports suggest Garcia tested positive for ostarine, which is used to support muscle growth and enhance performance.

It has been banned from boxing for the last 16 years and British boxer Amir Khan was previously banned for two years after testing positive for the substance.

Golden Boy Promotions – Garcia’s promoters – added: “Ryan has put out multiple statements denying knowingly using any banned substances – and we believe him.

Haney also commented and called for his rival to issue an apology to the fans.

He said: “We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty.

“Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke.

“We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living.”

Data breach management: Five tips for an effective response

Data breaches can have a devastating impact on both organisations and data subjects, regardless of the circumstances. After a breach, organisations can face a multitude of issues, including operational disruption, reputation damage, loss of customer trust and regulatory consequences. Though businesses exist that offer data protection as a service, there are still a few core concepts of data breach management best practices that every business should be aware of. Developing a long-term data breach framework and security strategy is key for any organisation to remain proactive and help mitigate the consequences of a data breach. It’s important for organisations to have a well-rounded approach to data breach management, and the below is a list of five tips to ensure you build an effective response to both cyber and non-cyber incidents.

Cyber vs non-cyber breaches: What’s the difference?

Some of the biggest personal data breaches in recent history have involved cyber-attacks on organisations by malicious third parties. A prime example is Yahoo’s 2013 breach, which involved 3 billion user accounts and was reportedly initiated by a spear-phishing email. Despite the growing concern of cyber-assisted breaches, the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) posits that non-cyber incidents still account for the highest number of reported breaches in total. A non-cyber breach could also be referred to as a physical or offline breach. As each name suggests, these happen through physical means, and usually involve some form of human error. Between October and December 2022, 75% of reported UK personal data breaches were classified as non-cyber, with “data emailed to the wrong recipient” cited as the leading cause, accounting for almost one in five incidents.

Data breach management best practices

No matter the organisation size or industry sector, proactive steps need to be taken to prevent a data breach. A robust plan should seek to offer more than mere protection from data breach penalties; it should allow organisations to respond swiftly and, ideally, provide the following advantages:
  • Build customer trust
  • Preserve brand reputation
  • Strengthen partnerships
  • Mitigate business disruption
  • Give stakeholders peace of mind
By having a robust plan and well-prepared staff, organisations can reduce the impact of potential attacks whilst demonstrating a firm commitment to safeguarding customer information. While larger organisations typically have dedicated teams and support for ongoing data security training, smaller businesses – especially self-employed individuals – can face unique challenges due to a lack of resources. Businesses in the UK can review the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) data protection guides for small organisations. For businesses in the EU, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) offers a similar guide.

5 tips for an effective data breach response

1. Establish a data breach response team

This can be a single person or a group, who will manage security incidents. Time is of the essence when responding to a breach, and a dedicated response team will play a vital role in minimising impact whilst safeguarding sensitive information. Ideally this person or team should have a firm understanding of data protection considerations, along with any immediate technical mitigation.

2. Review your data processing activities

Understanding how and where your organisation processes personal data (as well as the current security measures) helps identify potential weaknesses and highlights any risks. Regular reviews should be part of your overall plan, as they will enable you to make informed decisions on how best to allocate resources to strengthen your data protection efforts. Creating an Information Asset Register, conducting data mapping exercises and building a Record of Processing Activities (RoPA) can all help with this process. In addition, undertaking Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) on high risk processing activities ensures focus on processes where the impact of a data breach may be more significant.

3. Develop a data breach response plan

Though a risk assessment will identify areas of weakness, a robust data breach response plan ensures staff are prepared if a breach does occur. The specifics of a plan will vary, and can depend upon organisation size, industry sector and specific data handling practices. As a general rule of thumb, however, data breach response plans should include:
  • Details of the data breach response team
  • Breach identification and internal reporting and logging procedures
  • Legal and regulatory procedures
  • Breach containment and mitigation
  • External support resources
  • Breach risk assessment framework
  • Post-breach review procedures
  • Training and awareness requirements

4. Monitor for suspicious activity and anomalies

This should be a non-exhaustive and ongoing strategy for identifying potential breaches. Early intervention can reduce the damage caused by cyberattacks or personal data security incidents. Regularly updating and monitoring internal processes based on emerging threats and best practices is ideal. Here are some measures to consider:
  • Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) and Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)
  • Analyse web application logs for suspicious activities such as multiple login failures
  • Conduct regular data protection security audits
  • Conduct regular data protection refresher courses for all staff

5. Build a data protection culture

A company culture with in-built data protection awareness and knowledge is perhaps one of the primary factors in data breach prevention. As ICO figures show, the highest number of breaches are non-cyber, and of those, sending an email to the wrong recipient is the most probable cause of a data breach. Ongoing staff awareness and training is a core foundation for a strong data protection company culture.

Summary

Data breaches are an unfortunate reality that we must take into consideration, but by having a robust data breach management plan, organisations of all sizes can reduce the impact of potential attacks and demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding information. By following these five tips and implementing a step-by-step plan, personal information can be safer, data security can be stronger and the trust and confidence of stakeholders and customers can be ensured. Proactive measures and timely responses are the key for effective data breach management, so don’t sleep on this.

Jadon Sancho uncertain on Manchester United future after impressive Champions League display

Jadon Sancho says he does not know what the future holds for him at Manchester United.

The winger – on loan at Borussia Dortmund – impressed during the club’s 1-0 over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final.

But he has found it hard to make an impact under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford and was reluctant to speak on his wishes for next season after the match in Germany.

Speaking to CBS, he said: “Obviously I came here at 17 and they gave me the opportunity to play professional football.

“I’m just delighted with all staff and players that welcomed me back.

“I take it game by game and performances like today I hope it carries on.”

The 24-year-old has made 12 Bundesliga appearances for BVB since joining on loan in January, scoring twice.

His form has not reflected the period that earned him a move to Manchester United in the first place in 2021, but he has shown significant improvement in the last 12 months.

United great Peter Schmeichel asked whether Sancho wanted to stay at Dortmund beyond the summer, to which he said: “Who me? I really don’t know. I’m just focused on the present right now.”

Sancho’s contract in Manchester runs until 2026 and both the club and player will likely have a decision to make ahead of the 2024-25 season.

United have not performed as expected in the current campaign and could end the season trophyless if they fail to beat rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Navigating home ownership: A guide by Ascot Mortgages

0

Navigating the complexities of purchasing a home can be daunting. With the help of Ascot Mortgages, potential homeowners can find tailored mortgage solutions that suit their unique needs. This article breaks down the essential steps and considerations involved in the mortgage process.

Understanding Mortgage Basics

Before diving into the specifics of mortgages, it’s essential to grasp the basic principles:

What is a Mortgage?

A mortgage is a type of loan specifically designed to assist in the purchase of real estate, such as a house or other property. The borrower enters into an agreement with a lender (usually a bank or financial institution), where the lender provides the funds needed to buy the property upfront, and in return, the borrower agrees to pay back the loan over an agreed period of time, plus interest.

Key Components of a Mortgage:

  • Principal: This is the original amount of money borrowed from the lender to purchase the property. Over the term of the mortgage, the borrower repays this amount in full, typically through regular monthly payments.
  • Interest: This is the cost charged by the lender for borrowing the money. It is usually expressed as an annual percentage rate (APR). The rate can be fixed, remaining the same for the entire term of the mortgage, or variable, changing at prescribed intervals with market conditions.
  • Term: The mortgage term is the length of time that the terms and conditions of the loan, including the interest rate, are fixed. This is not necessarily the same as the amortisation period, which is the total time it takes to pay off the mortgage in full.
  • Down Payment: This is the portion of the property’s total purchase price that the borrower pays upfront, out of their own funds, before securing the mortgage. The size of the down payment can affect the interest rate and terms of the mortgage.
  • Equity: This is the portion of the property’s value that the borrower actually owns outright. It increases as the principal portion of the mortgage is paid down and as the value of the property appreciates.

Choosing the Right Mortgage

Selecting the right mortgage can impact your financial health significantly.

Consider these factors:

  • Interest Rates: Fixed vs. variable rates.
  • Repayment Period: Longer terms mean lower monthly payments but more interest overall.
  • Deposit: Usually, a higher deposit means better interest rates.

Made With Intent Raises £1.5m to Revolutionise eCommerce With Customer-Focused Technologies

Made With Intent has successfully secured £1.5 million in seed funding to develop their groundbreaking segmentation platform, which aims to redefine eCommerce by prioritising customer intent. The funding round, spearheaded by Mercuri and supported by Portfolio Ventures and Haatch, will enhance the company’s capabilities in product enhancement, marketing, and partnerships.

Founder David Mannheim, with 15 years of experience in optimising eCommerce conversion rates, identified a critical oversight in the industry. He stated, “The current measures of success are the problem. Metrics like conversion rate, and therefore the actions retailers take to improve them, are short-term, retrospective and aggregated. This creates a race to the bottom. A numbers game that forgets how people really buy.”

The platform provides retailers with a sophisticated tool for segmenting website performance and deploying predictive targeting mechanisms to meet customer needs instantly. This new methodology has been shown to increase revenues by 9.4% on average when compared to traditional optimisation techniques.

David further commented on the industry’s pitfalls: “eCommerce is often guilty of trying to convert all customers at all times. It focuses on the minority who are ready to buy, at the expense of those who are not. Our product helps retailers be appropriate for every customer. To progress both in-market and future buyers.”

Clients like Ernest Jones, Bensons for Beds, and Rapha have already benefited from the Beta version of the platform, finding it instrumental in aligning their sales approaches with real consumer behaviours. Nik Fletcher of Rapha praised the platform’s capabilities: “the closest we can get to understanding subconscious visitor signals, like we can in a physical store.”

The technology behind the platform models over 250 signals from online shoppers, providing real-time predictive intent metrics that automatically segment visitors based on their potential to buy, exit, or return.

The platform’s compatibility with over 40 marketing tools allows eCommerce teams to refine consumer interactions using their current setups.

Alan Hudson of Mercuri commended the strategic vision behind Made With Intent: “Made With Intent has embraced first-principle thinking and a decade of insights to shake up the vast eCommerce market,” he observed. “It empowers online commerce, making it more personal and focused on the quality of prospective customers. The product roadmap excites us and, importantly, those using it.”

David Mannheim highlighted the broader implications of their work: “Made With Intent is about more than a platform. It’s about a movement to create a more personal, human eCommerce. This investment brings us closer to fulfilling our mission.”

Co-op Live’s first gig cancelled as fans queued outside

Hoards of fans expecting to watch US rapper, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie at Co-op Live arena this evening, were told the gig was cancelled as they queued up outside.

Oak View Group, which is responsible for the building, told the PA News Agency that during the soundcheck, a component of the heating and air conditioning system had come away from the ductwork.

While no one was injured, the CEO, Tim Leiweke, apologised and confirmed the group would ‘not run any event until it is absolutely safe to do so’.

It was another bodyblow for the new £365 million venue – the biggest indoor arena in the UK – had already pushed gigs by comedian Peter Kay, back twice.

Along with a concert by The Black Keys, the gigs were postponed because there were concerns that internal security systems and fire safety measures had still to be thoroughly tested.

Co-op Live later confirmed that Olivia Rodrigo’s shows scheduled for May 3 and 4, will not go ahead.

Technical reasons

Outside the arena, fans were told the gig had to be cancelled for technical reasons.

And at 6.40pm, the venue announced on X, “Due to a venue-related technical issue, tonight’s A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie show will no longer go ahead.”

Co-op Live told fans to “leave the arena” with many already inside and long queues forming.

Those with tickets were informed they would “receive further information in due course”.

Shocked

A spokesperson from the Co-op Group issued a statement tonight which read, “As the naming rights sponsor for Co-op Live, we are shocked at the incident which has led to late cancellation of tonight’s show at the arena. We are relieved that no-one has been injured but we share the disappointment of ticket holders, many of whom are Co-op members, with the continuing delay to the opening of Co-op Live and the disruption that this is causing to everyone who has been looking forward to attending events.

“We will be seeking a full explanation from Oak View Group  to the obvious questions arising from this, together with a clear plan from the Co-op Live venue management team at OVG for opening the venue and postponed and future events.

“Safety is of course, the number one priority and it is critical that Co-op members and other ticket holders can enjoy events in a venue with the very highest levels of security and safety in place.

“We are very grateful for Manchester City Council’s and the emergency services’ continued engagement with OVG to ensure that Co-op Live opens as soon as possible.”

World Snooker Championship: Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump suffer shock exits

Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump were dumped out in the quarter-finals on a day of shocks at the World Snooker Championship.

Seven-time world champion O’Sullivan fell to a 13-10 defeat against Stuart Bingham, with No3 seed Trump losing 13-9 to Jak Jones earlier in the day at the Crucible.

Bingham and Jones will now go head-to-head in the semi-finals.

Welshman Jones, 30, told BBC Sport: “I feel good and pleased to get through. I thought Judd struggled. He started with a century and it kind of motivated me.

“I played a good three frames then and although it went 4-4, I felt like he was a different player and went into his shell a bit and I took advantage of it.”

On the other side of the draw, David Gilbert booked his place in the semi-finals by beating Steven Maguire 13-8.

He will face fellow Englishman Kyren Wilson, who advanced to the final four following a 13-8 triumph over John Higgins.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Madrid Open title defence ended by Andrey Rublev

Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of a third straight Madrid Open triumph were ended in stunning fashion by Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.

Russian Rublev recorded the biggest win of his career to date by defeating the two-time Grand Slam winner 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the quarter-finals and ending his opponent’s 14-match win streak in the Spanish capital.

Rafael Nadal ‘didn’t want to cry’ in Madrid Open 2024 defeat

The 17th seed will face American Taylor Fritz or Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo for a place in the final.

Alcaraz, 20, struggled to find his best form throughout the contest following his gruelling three-hour showdown with Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday.

After claiming the upset in front of an Alcaraz-backed home crowd, Rublev told Sky Sports Tennis: “I can’t believe that I was able to stay calm throughout the match. I didn’t say a word and even I’m impressed by that.

“I want to believe that I have been working on this because if not then I’m stupid.

“After so many years, to not improve on this would mean that something is wrong with my head. I just thought to myself to keep trying, keep fighting, keep believing in yourself.

“I just wanted to go for it and thought maybe I will have more break points and in the end, I was able to return well and break him. It gave me confidence and go for it and little by little I was able to do it.

“The atmosphere was crazy and it was nice to play here.”

It is a fatal blow to Spain’s hopes of a home champion after five-time winner Rafa Nadal was sent packing by Jiri Lehecka on Tuesday in what is likely to be the 37-year-old’s final appearance at the tournament.

Meanwhile, world No2 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the tournament with a hip injury and will not take to the court to play his quarter-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
