England v Pakistan: first T20I at Headingley washed out

0

The opening T20 international of Pakistan’s tour of England has been abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Headingley was set to host the first of a four-match T20 series on Wednesday evening as the countdown to England’s defence of their World Cup title begins.

However heavy rain over Leeds throughout the day, and the prospect of more to come into the evening, meant it would not have been possible to fulfil even the shortest possible encounter of five overs aside.

The series will now be decided over three matches, starting at Edgbaston on Saturday afternoon and heading to Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Tuesday, May 28, and finishing at The Oval on Thursday, May 30.

The series is England’s only preparation before flying out on May 31 ahead of the World Cup in the Caribbean and USA.

England have recalled eight of their 15-man squad early from IPL duty, which has raised some eyebrows in India, as they step-up preparations for their tournament opener on June 4 in Barbados against Scotland.

Jofra Archer is hoping to use this series to prove his fitness after a 14-month absence due to a chronic elbow problem.

The 29-year-old made a wicket-taking comeback for Sussex 2nds last week and is expected to play in at least two matches against Pakistan, the side England beat to land the 2022 title in Melbourne.

Skipper Jos Buttler is on standby as he is expecting the birth of his third child soon.

Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, go into the series off the back of securing a 2-1 win over Ireland in a three-match T20I series, last week.

The Shift from Credit to Debit Cards Among Millennials

0

In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift among millennials from using credit cards to preferring debit cards. This trend is driven by several factors, including a desire for better financial management, the avoidance of debt, and the integration of modern financial solutions like the Banxe.

Financial Responsibility and Debt Avoidance

Millennials are known for their cautious approach to financial management. Having witnessed the repercussions of the 2008 financial crisis, many are wary of accumulating debt. Debit cards provide a way to manage finances more responsibly, as they allow users to spend only what they have in their accounts, avoiding the pitfalls of credit card debt.

Technological Integration and Convenience

The rise of digital banking has also played a significant role in this shift. Millennials are digital natives who demand seamless, technology-driven solutions for their financial needs. Banxe exemplifies this trend with its innovative features and user-centric approach.

Banxe Debit Card: A Modern Financial Tool

The Banxe Card is a contactless debit card that offers a multitude of benefits tailored to the needs of modern users. Available in both digital and physical formats, it ensures that users can manage their finances effortlessly, whether online or in the physical world.

One of the standout features of the Banxe Debit Card is its ability to be topped up with both fiat money and cryptocurrency 24/7 directly from a Banxe account. This feature is particularly appealing to millennials, who are more likely to engage with cryptocurrencies. The card supports transactions with over 350 cryptocurrencies, providing unparalleled access and convenience for digital currency transactions.

High Limits and Low Fees

The Banxe Debit Card also boasts high ATM withdrawal limits and a transparent, low-fee structure. This makes it an attractive option for both everyday use and travel. The sleek, all-black design of the card underscores its premium nature, catering to individuals, businesses, entrepreneurs, startups, and digital nomads.

Enhanced Security Features

Security is a top priority for Banxe. It incorporates advanced security measures such as 3D Secure and Multi-factor Authentication to protect every transaction. Users can quickly block or freeze the card and set limits directly from their Banxe account, ensuring full control over their finances.

Seamless Integration with Banxe Services

The Banxe Debit Card is part of a broader suite of financial services offered by Banxe. With a unique International Bank Account Number (IBAN), users can manage their financial transactions with flexibility and freedom, bypassing traditional banking hours and costly transfer methods. The integration of cryptocurrency into the Banxe platform allows for 24/7 account top-ups, enabling users to convert their digital currency into fiat money and use their funds immediately.

A Gateway to the Cryptocurrency Market

The Banxe Debit Card is more than just a payment method; it’s a gateway to the cryptocurrency market. By supporting a wide array of cryptocurrencies, it provides millennials with the tools they need to navigate the digital currency landscape effectively.

Changing Spending Patterns

Recent data from a TransUnion study highlights significant changes in consumer spending patterns. Credit card usage has seen a slight decline in certain spending categories, while cash usage has risen. Specifically, cash payments for groceries have increased by 34% and by 23% for retail purchases compared to last year, indicating ongoing economic uncertainty.

Meanwhile, the use of digital wallets has surged among younger consumers, with debit cards now accounting for half of all digital wallet transactions in the grocery and retail sectors. Additionally, cash spending at restaurants has increased by 12% since 2023, with older, wealthier consumers contributing to a 23% rise in cash usage in this category over the last quarter.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Banxe continues to innovate, with plans to introduce new products aimed at simplifying daily banking and cryptocurrency transactions. This ongoing commitment to reliability, security, and exceptional customer service positions Banxe at the forefront of the evolving financial landscape.

The shift from credit to debit cards among millennials is driven by a combination of financial responsibility, technological integration, and the desire for modern, flexible financial solutions. The Banxe Debit Card is a prime example of how these trends are shaping the future of payments, offering a robust, user-friendly platform that meets the diverse needs of today’s consumers.

Hundreds of jobs at risk in Yodel’s Oldham depot closure

Parcel giant Yodel has announced it will be closing its national sortation and transport depot in Shaw.

The “devastating blow” could affect around 350 workers.

Yodel CEO Mike Hancox said the ‘difficult decision’ was a result of a ‘strategic review’.

He added: “We are hugely grateful for the support of our colleagues based at Shaw over the years and we are now working in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders to provide guidance and support to those affected.

“Yodel has experienced a significant transformation over recent years with the rapid growth of our customer-to-customer service, Yodel Direct, and expansion of our Out of Home network and international operations. To meet demand for growing capacity and evolving parcel types with different sortation needs, we continue to invest in infrastructure and technology across our network including our core Wednesbury and Hatfield sortation centres.”

Mark Todd, Usdaw national officer said: “Yodel’s proposal to close their Shaw site is a devastating blow for staff and the wider community. Usdaw will now enter into meaningful consultation talks with the company, where we will interrogate their business case for this closure and seek the best possible outcome for our members.

“In the meantime, we are providing our members with the support, advice and representation that they need at this difficult time.”

Oldham Council said officials had been in discussions with Yodel bosses to set up support measures.

Leader, Arooj Shah said: “Our specialist staff and resources are being dedicated to these efforts in areas such as helping people find new jobs, training opportunities, and linking them up with wider council and partners’ support services.”

Major lighting upgrade to save Manchester hospitals £200,000 per year

Several of Manchester’s largest hospitals are set to save hundreds of thousands of pounds
and cut hundreds of tonnes of CO2 emissions following a huge upgrade to their lighting.

Thousands of lights have been switched to more efficient LED units at Manchester University Hospital’s North Manchester General, Trafford, and Wythenshawe hospitals as
well as their Oxford Road campus in central Manchester.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Department for Health and Social Care awarded Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust £1.2million in funding to make the changes as part of a national energy efficient lighting scheme across the NHS.

The move will see the hospitals save an estimated £210,000 every year in electricity costs
and reduce the amount of electricity consumed by 800 000 kWh, roughly the equivalent
usage of around 300 UK homes.

Such a reduction in electricity demand will also mean the hospitals will save around 220
tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, the same amount produced by charging 26 million
smart phones.

Mark Foden, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust’s associate director of
sustainability, said: “The future of our organisation is a green one, this is another positive step in a series of changes we’re making to become net zero carbon and save on costs and emissions.

“Along with decarbonising our buildings by making them more energy efficient, we’re fully
electrifying our in-house vehicles, changing our procurement process to ensure greener
alternatives are used, working with pharmacy teams to reduce the environmental impact and unnecessary overprescribing, supporting colleagues with green quality improvement projects and encouraging active travel for staff through public transport discounts and support for cyclists with our free bike maintenance sessions and access to bike hubs across our sites.

“On top of all of this, with our lighting changes, we’re making changes for a safer as well as a greener environment.

“Where appropriate, while upgrading to more energy efficient fittings we’ve changed the
timers and controls on our lighting and made exterior areas brighter so people feel more
secure using our facilities. Many internal areas have also been fitted with smart lighting controls that dim and turn off the lighting when it isn’t needed, taking account of natural
daylight or occupancy, but react quickly when required.”

Conor McGregor next fight: MMA star has plan to compete every three months from UFC 303

0

Conor McGregor has said he will fight in September and December after making his long-awaited return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303.

Two-weight champion McGregor will have been out of the Octagon for almost three years when he faces Chandler in Las Vegas on June 29, returning after successive defeats to Dustin Poirier in 2021, breaking a leg in the second of those losses.

“I’ll do three this year,” the 35-year-old told The Mac Life, adding that the second scrap will be around the time of Mexican Independence Day on September 16.

“It could be against a fighter of Mexican heritage. I don’t know the ins and outs of it. I thought that would be a lovely one.

“I’m up for anyone. I don’t really care who is it. I just want to be active. They are queueing up.”

McGregor remains the most marketable and best-known fighter in MMA, although he has lost three of his last four bouts.

McGregor v Chandler records

Chandler is two years McGregor’s senior and has a mixed record since joining the UFC, losing three of his five bouts.

The fighter known as ‘Iron’ knocked out Dan Hooker on his promotion debut in 2021 but was stopped by Charles Oliveira when he challenged for the lightweight crown.

He then lost a thriller by decision against Justin Gaethje and knocked out Tony Ferguson in impressive style at UFC 274.

The American has not fought since suffering a submission loss to Poirier at UFC 281 in November 2022.

McGregor and Chandler have been on a collision course because of their positions as rival coaches on the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter reality TV series.

After his fighters fell 6-0 behind in bouts against Chandler’s team, McGregor hurled insults at Chandler in an altercation which became physical before White stepped in.

Major new junction upgrade scheme for Rochdale moves closer

0

Proposals for a £9 million upgrade of a major stretch of road between Castleton and Rochdale town centre are set to move forward with a report on the scheme due to be considered by the town council’s cabinet.

The scheme would see a number of junctions along the busy A58 Manchester road upgraded with new crossings to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, and new, optimised lights which will monitor traffic movements and speed up journey times.

A total of seven junctions are in line for improvements, including Manchester Road and Bolton Road, Manchester Road and Roch Valley Way and Manchester Road and Drake Street.

A new crossing will be created across Manchester Road to enable safe and easy access to Highfield Hospital, with the existing subway set to be filled in.

A filter arrow will also be added to the right turn from Manchester Road to New Barn Lane to improve safety.

A new cycle lane will be created to extend the existing cycle lane in Castleton from The Royal Toby Hotel into Rochdale town centre.

To ensure that no parking bays or road space are lost, the lane will utilise large stretches of Old Manchester Road, which runs parallel to Manchester Road. To complement this part of the project, new greenery and benches will be introduced along Old Manchester Road, along 20mph speed limits and road humps.

The project has attracted £9.1m from the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Challenge Fund and the council’s cabinet will be asked to approve the investment before it goes to Transport for Greater Manchester for final sign off. If it goes through, work on the scheme is expected to begin later this year, with the entire project due for completion in 2026.

If the scheme is approved, detailed traffic management plans will be drawn up to ensure that disruption, while inevitable, will be kept to an absolute minimum.

Councillor Shah Wazir said: “These proposals will bring a huge number of improvements which will benefit every type of road user. The junction upgrades will improve safety for both cyclists and pedestrians, while the intelligent signals will help to improve journey times for motorists. In addition, the new cycle lane will support people who are keen to try sustainable travel options, while not compromising any existing parking or road space.”

England v Pakistan: first T20I – Preview, squads, how to watch

The State of Play

England welcome Pakistan to Headingley for the start of a four-match T20 series on Wednesday night as the countdown to the defence of their World Cup title begins.

The series is England’s only preparation before flying out on May 31 ahead of the World Cup in the Caribbean and USA.

IPL 2024: Rajasthan Royals v Royal Challengers Bengaluru

England have recalled eight of their 15-man squad early from IPL duty, which has raised some eyebrows in India, as they step-up preparations for their tournament opener on June 4 in Barbados against Scotland.

Bridgetown-born Jofra Archer is hoping to use this series to prove his fitness after a 14-month absence due to a chronic elbow problem.

The 29-year-old made a wicket-taking comeback for Sussex 2nds last week and is expected to play in at least two of the four matches against Pakistan, the side England beat to land the 2022 title in Melbourne.

Teammate Sam Curran, player of the tournament in the World Cup success, said Archer ‘has obviously got that extra pace and fear factor,’ and added: “Hopefully his injuries are behind him now.”

Skipper Jos Buttler is on standby as he is expecting the birth of his third child soon while white ball head coach Matthew Mott missed Monday’s training session for personal reasons.

Pakistan, led by Babar Azam, go into the series off the back of securing a 2-1 win over Ireland in a three-match T20I series, last week.

The series continues to Edgbaston on Saturday, Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Tuesday, May 28, and finishes at The Oval on Thursday, May 30.

Line-ups from:

England: Jos Buttler (C), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Ben Duckett, Tom Hartley, Will Jacks, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt (WK), Reece Topley, and Mark Wood.

Pakistan: Babar Azam (C), Mohammad Rizwan (WK), Saim Ayub, Fakhar Zaman, Irfan Khan Niazi, Iftikhar Ahmad, Usman Khan (WK), Azam Khan (WK), Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Abbas Afridi, Abrar Ahmed, Hasan Ali, and Salman Ali Agha.

How to watch

Sky have the rights to show the England v Pakistan T20I series to UK viewers and will broadcast every game live. Wednesday’s match will be shown on Sky Sports Cricket and Main Event from 6pm BST.

In India, the games can be streamed on the Sony LIV app and website. They are also available across the Sony Sports Network.

Prediction

Unfortunately the weather forecast in Leeds on Wednesday evening gives little cause for optimism.

That might mean England don’t risk Archer on a potentially slippery outfield, even if some play is possible.

England are the defending World Cup winners, beat Pakistan 2-1 on their last visit to these shores in 2021 and, along with India and Australia, are expected to compete for glory again in the Caribbean and US.

Given the wealth of talent at their disposal, even if they are missing the likes of Jos Buttler for a game or two, England will be firm favourites to complete a series win and potentially a whitewash.
