Wimbledon 2024: De Minaur pulls out of Djokovic clash due to injury

Alex De Minaur has been forced to withdraw from his Wimbledon quarter-final against Novak Djokovic due to a hip problem.

The Australian suffered the injury in his fourth-round clash over Arthur Fils when attempting an angled stop volley in the final game of his 6-2 6-4 4-6 6-3 triumph.

The ninth seed, who was due to face Djokovic on Centre Court this afternoon, said in a statement:  “Obviously not an announcement I wanted to make by any means.

“I am devastated to pull out due to a hip injury, a little tear of the fibre cartilage that kind of is at the end of or connects to the adductor. 

“I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils and got a scan yesterday and it confirmed that this was the injury and with high risk of making it worse if I was to step on court.”

De Minaur now faces a race against time to be fit for the Paris Olympics, with the tennis event getting underway at Roland Garros on July 27.

His withdrawal means Djokovic moves through to a last-four meeting with either Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti.

It will be the Serbian’s 13th singles semi at Wimbledon, equalling the record of Roger Federer.

Caddick renovates Trafford-based children’s charity
Caddick Construction has extended its redevelopment work at Stretford Mall to support a children’s charity with much-needed renovations.

Founded in 2022, the Little Green Sock Project is a Stretford-based charity dedicated to supporting struggling local families with pre-loved items donated by the local community; from clothing, footwear and toys to equipment including prams, cots and high chairs.


Caddick’s renovation of the Little Green Sock Project transformed the formerly-derelict building from an unsightly and unsecure property, to a safe and welcoming space.
The work means the charity is now able to invite members of the local community on to the premises where it provides much-needed support to more than 1,000 children every year.


The building work consisted of levelling out the flooring then laying carpet, installing a security door, erecting partition walls, plus the creation of a comfortable seating area in order to offer wider support and sign-post local services.


Co-founder of Little Green Sock Project, Catherine D’Albertanson, said: “Since moving to Stretford in November 2022, our goals has been to create a welcoming space where families can choose essential items for their children, while also opening doors to connect them with further support within our community. Poverty often removes choice, so offering families the opportunity to select items in a safe and judgement-free environment restores dignity.


“Caddick’s incredible work has transformed our premises, allowing us to safely invite families in and expand our services beyond donations. We are extremely grateful to Caddick Construction and its Social Value Manager, Faye, for the unwavering support of the Little Green Sock Project.”


David Saville, managing director at Caddick Construction Group in the North West, sadi: “Before we had even put a spade in the ground at Stretford Mall our teams spent time getting to know the community, including volunteering within local charities. Little Green Socks is a fantastic cause, situated just next door to our Stretford Mall development, and we are pleased to have been able to support Catherine and her team in this way – enabling them to focus their valuable time on the incredible work they do for families in the local area.

Anwyl acquires land for 65 new homes in Chorlton

A housebuilder has acquired a five-acre site for 65 new homes in Chorlton, from a youth charity.

Anwyl Homes will bring much needed affordable homes to the area, while The Greater Manchester Youth Federation will use monies from the land sale to reinvest in local youth facilities.

Anwyl was selected as preferred development partner for the Wilbraham Road site in 2022 after a competitive tender process. Planning permission was granted in October 2023.

Work has now started on new development, which will be marketed as Dalton Fields, a nod to its former name of Harry Dalton Fields. The venture will include three and four-bedroom homes for private sale, plus 13 affordable homes, seven of which will be designated for social rent and six for shared ownership.

The homes will be highly energy efficient, using air source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water in place of traditional gas boilers, and each will have an electric vehicle charging point.

Redevelopment of this redundant parcel of land has been able to unlock wider community benefits of almost £558,000, with the funding committed as part of the planning agreement. This will go towards a new 4G football pitch at the neighbouring St Margaret’s Centre and Playing Field, where an orchard will also be enhanced to encourage biodiversity.

Funds are also earmarked for Maine Road FC, who play at the adjacent Brantingham Road ground, as well as Alexandra Park, and South Manchester Cricket Club.

Youth services across Manchester will also benefit from the sale of the land by the Greater Manchester Youth Federation (GMYF). The charity supports approximately 30 clubs across the city region.

Phil Dolan, chief operating officer at Anwyl Homes (pictured right with Karen Wilson, CEO of GMYF)  said: “Our new development will bring far-reaching benefits for the community. As well as delivering energy efficient new and affordable homes to meet strong demand, it will also bring on-site biodiversity net gain, additional tree planting and funding for local sports facilities. This includes upgrades to LED floodlights for our neighbours Maine Road FC so the club can host more home fixtures.

“We’ve worked closely with the GMYF throughout the planning process. This land transaction represents a significant step forward for the charity in securing a more sustainable future. It has taken several years of work for them to bring this site to market and achieve planning consent. It’s been a real team effort between us, the GMYF, property consultants Roger Hannah, planning consultants Asteer Planning, and legal advisors Shoosmiths. On behalf of ourselves and the GMYF, I’d also like to thank Manchester City Council and local ward members for their input and support throughout.”

The charity opened its first youth centre, Partington Youth and Community Centre, in April 2022, entering into a 99-year lease with Trafford Council for the building.

It also committed £200,000 to refurbish The Charlestown Centre (formerly the Whitemoss Youth and Community Centre), which reopened to young people in June this year, run by three full-time members of staff.

Trio arrested after £200,000 drugs stash found in Eastlands

Three men – aged 19, 21 and 22 – were arrested in Manchester on Monday night, on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

An eagle-eyed officer from Greater Manchester Police’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) stopped a black Ford Fiesta on the junction of Graymare Lane at around 7.30pm.

With assistance from the Tactical Aid Unit (TAU), the vehicle was searched and two large blocks of white powder – worth around £200,000 – were found under the passenger seat.

All three men remain in police custody for questioning. An investigation is ongoing into suspected drugs supply.

Chief inspector Michael Parker said: “This was an excellent recovery from our officer who trusted their instinct after spotting something suspicious, resulting in a large quantity of drugs being taken off the streets.

“Tackling drugs supply and the criminal use of Greater Manchester’s road network continues to be one of our priorities, as it has devasting and far-reaching consequences for the safety of our communities and I want to make it clear that we are continuing to take robust and proactive measures to continue to listen to your concerns and deal with those who are intent on breaking the law.”

He commented: “There’s a definite change in the landscape regarding remote work. Companies are pushing for a return to the office, reducing previously available remote or hybrid options. I think this is a shock to many who have worked remotely for the past few years.”

Dan believes this shift is driven by the challenges companies face in fostering collaborative teamwork remotely.

Dan added: “It appears that some companies have over-recruited and are discovering that the easiest way to accurately monitor staff performance is if they are on-site in a work environment.

“With so many people turning to remote working during the Coronavirus pandemic, it also seems that employees have changed their lifestyles to suit working from home. With this in mind, employers offering remote working are often having to adapt the available role to the new candidate’s demands and routines.”

As of January 2024, LinkedIn reported twice the number of applications for remote roles compared to the available remote positions. The platform also revealed that only 9% of job postings last month were fully remote, with remote postings down 23% from this time last year.

Current trends in recruitment reveal a rise in HR, marketing, and internal talent candidates facing redundancies, as businesses strive to balance accounts and manage costs. On the other hand, demand remains high in tech, sales, and engineering sectors, leading to a significant increase in salaries.

“These in-demand fields are experiencing a significant rise in salaries, exceeding 20% in some cases, due to a talent shortage. Unfortunately, when companies tighten their belts, HR, marketing, and internal talent roles are often the first to be cut,” Dan highlights.

“Heart of gold”: Family pays tribute to man who died following serious injuries

The family of a 72-year-old man who died from serious injuries, have paid tribute to him.

Patrick McCooey (pictured) was found injured on Royal Drive in Leigh on Friday, June 28, and died in hospital, several days later.

His family have now paid tribute to him, saying: “This incident has resulted in Patrick’s untimely death and this has left our family totally devastated and heartbroken.

“Patrick was a very caring person who had a smile for all and a heart of gold. There are the memories we will have to hold.

“If you were in the area and seen or heard anything, no matter how small or trivial, Patrick McCooey’s sisters, brother, nieces and nephews would appreciate if you contact Greater Manchester Police to assist them with their ongoing enquiries.”

An 18-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of murder has since been released on bail. Enquiries are still ongoing.

Due to concerns around the initial response to the police report, a referral has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct.
