Leading European Compressor Manufacturer chooses Holroyd’s “Two-in-One” Profile Milling Technology

One of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high quality compressed air systems has purchased two of Holroyd Precision’s newly developed 4EX-R-BL (BL = blower) CNC profile milling machines.

Built at Holroyd’s UK technology centre in Rochdale, 4EX-R-BL models are effectively two machines in one as, in addition to producing helical rotors, they can be programmed to precision-mill straight-fluted components as used in Roots-type blower ‘air ends’.

Flexibility to cut both helical rotors and Roots-type blowers

“Since announcing their launch, we have received considerable interest in the capabilities of 4EX-R-BL models from manufacturers who wish to achieve high levels of efficiency,” says Holroyd sales manager, Mark Curran. “As you can imagine, it was therefore particularly pleasing to then secure two machine orders from one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of compressor systems. The company in question required the flexibility to cut both helical rotors and blowers, and the 4EX-R-BL machines more than fitted the bill.”

For some time, Precision Technologies Group business, Holroyd Precision, has been looking at how it can further extend the capabilities of its EX Series milling machines, to enable their high speed, high precision and high performance to be applied to the manufacture of Roots-type blowers.

The company believes the new model will revolutionise the way in which straight fluted, infinitive lead rotors are milled, significantly reducing manufacturing time and increasing the accuracy of the production process.

30-minute milling time, floor-to-floor

Although sitting within Holroyd’s EX range of rotor milling machines, the 4EX-R-BL is in fact a totally new machine that has been designed from the ground up. As well as being equipped to mill helical rotors of up to 450mm in diameter, the 4EX-R-BL will rough mill blower blanks of around 320mm in diameter and 900mm body length into straight fluted rotors in 30 minutes floor-to-floor, ready for finish profile milling to absolute size. This represents a significant time saving when compared to the one-and-a-half to two hours typically required to cut individual Roots-type blower rotor flutes using traditional milling techniques.

No manual intervention

Totally removing the need for manual intervention or indexing during the milling of each flute, the Holroyd 4EX-R-BL features a bespoke steadying system that has been designed to withstand the additional forces that are generated during the milling of straight flutes. Specially developed ‘finger clamps’ ensure the workpiece is held securely while a flute is being milled, then release to enable automatic rotation and positioning ready for milling of the next flute.

“In what has been a genuine ‘from the ground up’ development of a completely new kind of machining centre, in the 4EX-R-BL we have designed a model that is able to produce all helixes from horizontal to vertical, for helical rotors, infinitive lead blowers, helical blowers, compressor rotors and vacuum pumps,” adds Mark Curran. “This significant level of versatility makes the 4EX-R-BL well suited to manufacturers who perhaps make different rotor types and therefore need considerable flexibility in their machining technologies, as well as providing a new, highly superior manufacturing solution for producers of Roots-type blowers.”

Incorporating the brands of Holroyd, Holroyd Precision Rotors, Binns & Berry and Crawford Swift, PTG has established itself at the forefront of high precision machine tool design, build and supply. The PTG range includes ultra precision grinding machines for rotor, thread and gear operations; rotor milling machines; heavy duty lathes; deep hole boring machines; friction stir welding machines and special purpose machine tools for the manufacture of precision components. Industrial sectors served range from aerospace, medical and mould tool & die to marine, power generation, mining, oil & gas, steel, high end and heavy automotive.

Results positive for Stockport College

Students and staff at Stockport College are celebrating another year of positive results in GCSE and functional skills Maths and English along with some impressive 100% pass rates across a wide range of Vocational and Technical courses.

Many of the students sitting exams were re-taking their GCSE maths and/or English as they had not achieved a grade C at school, whilst others were studying functional skills. Pass rates for Maths have risen by over 4% and the pass rate for English is showing an improving trend.

Yanli Volavola, who commuted from Macclesfield to come to Stockport College, passed her English GCSE which will now allow her to continue onto university and study for a degree in adult nursing at Chester University. She said of her results: “I couldn’t believe it when I opened my results, I was really surprised. I wasn’t really confident because the exam was difficult and because of the new grading of GCSEs.”

It’s not the first time that Yanli has experienced the nerves of results day as last year she received her maths and Science results, gaining an A* in maths.

A large number of students excelled in a range of vocational courses with 100% pass rate which included: Art & Design, Beauty Therapy, Professional Cookery, Health, Fitness & Exercise Instruction, Hairdressing and Performing Engineering Operations.

Stockport College Deputy Principal, Amanda Kennedy, said: “We are very proud of our students who have done brilliantly. Many students come to us to improve their grades, follow their career aspirations, or further their studies, and it is often a life changing journey for them. On behalf of the whole College, I would like to wish our students all the best for the future and good luck with achieving their next goals. I would like to thank the staff in the College for helping the students to gain the success they deserve”.

One-Billion-Pound Transformation Programme Takes off After Manchester Airport Has bumper Bank Holiday Weekend

Manchester Airport has unveiled the first part of its £1bn transformation programme as the summer holiday season comes to an end.

Some passengers passing through Terminal 2 will now use a new temporary gate lounge that can hold up to 650 passengers. The first passengers used the lounge this week and after successful trials, more flights will now use the facility. It will be in operation for up to two years and the wraps have been taken off the new building a little over a month after work on the project began.

The first two passengers Mr and Mrs Raistrick were jetting off to Rhodes with Monarch Airlines and were rewarded with a VIP airport experience for their next holiday.

The new gate lounge will allow the west half of Terminal 2 to be completely demolished and rebuilt whilst the airfield remains in full operation. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by 2019.

Thanks to ceiling high windows, the new lounge provides passengers with a close-up view of the airfield. The facility has also been decorated with a timeline that tells the history of the airport as well as information on the transformation programme.

The area also sees new enlarged toilet cubicles and new wayfinding branding including signage that will be replicated throughout the terminal once the transformation programme is complete.

The opening of the new lounge comes a month after a visit from the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP to see the start of the works. As well as launching the airport’s transformation, he also launched the UK’s national aviation strategy where he positioned Manchester as “the UK’s other hub airport.”

Rob Stewart, Delivery Director for MAN-TP, said: “The opening of the lounge is the first milestone for the project since work started. It will allow us to demolish the western side of Terminal 2 and passengers will soon see cranes in place starting those works. The new facility has been finished to a high standard and it is great to use the space to tell passengers travelling to destinations ranging from Beijing to San Francisco about the history of Manchester Airport and our plans for the future.

“Excitement is really building about the changes taking place at the airport and we are looking forward to seeing it develop in the weeks and months ahead.”

The first part of the transformation programme comes after the airport’s busiest ever Bank Holiday Weekend, with more than 420,000 passengers passing through the terminals over the three days.

Time-lapse footage of the building of a new gating lounge at T2, Manchester Airport can be viewed here.

The aviation industry’s most senior leaders will take part in the World Routes 2017 conference programme, including Willie Walsh, CEO of IAG.

The annual World Routes forum brings together airlines, airports and tourism authorities to plan and negotiate future air services. It moves to a new location every year to shine a spotlight on different destinations across the globe.

The year’s event in Barcelona (23-26 September) has drawn some of the biggest names in aviation. Willie Walsh famously reached the top of the industry, running British Airways and Aer Lingus before taking up his current role at IAG.

Having recently launched IAG’s new low-cost airline LEVEL from Barcelona El-Prat Airport, it will be an opportune time for Willie to talk about why the low cost, long-haul model will dominate the skies by 2020.

Other speakers include Skúli Mogensen, CEO of Wow Air, Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines and Giorgio Callegari, deputy CEO of Aeroflot. They will take part in a debate about route development in a world where disruptions such as fluctuating oil prices, rising nationalism and security issues are becoming the norm.

World Routes’ official charity partner is The Travel Foundation which has delivered sustainable tourism projects in 26 countries. The charity will be at the event to explore the role that aviation has to play in the management of global tourism, taking part in panel discussions and talks.

Other topics that will be explored during World Routes include air cargo development, working with the cruise industry to achieve growth, the ways that digital technology will reshape aviation by 2020 and the modernisation of aging airport infrastructure.

Steven Small, brand director of Routes said: “World Routes brings together the leaders who shape route development, direct the aviation industry, and help to shape and influence destinations. What better place to be involved in World Routes than Barcelona – one of the most fascinating cities in Europe.”

World Routes 2017 will be hosted by the Government of Catalonia with support from Barcelona City Council. The conference progamme is sponsored by OAG.

EDM makes £5k donation to Mayor Andy Burnham’s Homelessness Fund

Manchester, UK. EDM, a leading global provider of training simulators to the civil aviation and defence sectors, announced today that it has donated £5000 to the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham’s Homelessness Fund.

Mayor Burnham launched the fund in June this year as part of his mayoral election pledge to end rough sleeping in Greater Manchester by 2020. After donating 15% of his own salary to the fund and encouraging donations from individuals and companies, the Mayor is now actively inviting community and voluntary organisations established to help homeless people to apply for money to help tackle the issue.

Tony Bermingham, Managing Director of EDM, handed over the cheque for £5000 to the Mayor last month whilst he was visiting the company to formally open its new £1.3m 20,000 square feet manufacturing facility.

“As a proud and long-standing member of the Greater Manchester business community, we’re passionate about supporting worthy local causes,” said Mr Bermingham. “We’ve been supporting various Manchester based charities for many years now and when we read about the Mayor’s homeless initiative we felt strongly that this was another very worthwhile cause we should help with.”

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester said: “We’re lucky in Greater Manchester to have businesses like EDM who recognise the need to give back to our communities. Their donation to the Mayor’s Homelessness Fund is incredibly generous and will go directly to supporting people who need help.

“I would encourage other businesses to support and join our mission to put a roof over every head in Greater Manchester by 2020.”

Selectric Launches Plans to Expand Salford Operations

Manchester, September 2017- A well-established Salford business, Selectric, is aiming to expand their business portfolio that’s primarily in the electrical market, manufacturing wholesale products, with an exciting new residential development. For over 30 years, Selectric has been operating under Chairman Jack Ellis, he explains, the apartment block they’re proposing has been strategically thought-out to expand their business in it’s entirely.

“ Selectric operates out of two facilities in Salford; one is on the site that we’re proposing to redevelop into apartments and the other is nearby on Cow Lane. If this planning application is approved, we’ll be actively looking for a new location in Salford to co-locate these operations. The investment from the residential units will enable Selectric to move into a larger, custom, state-of-the-art manufacturing and warehouse centre, facilitating significant business expansion.”

Ellis adds, the relocation of staff at both facilities will take place prior to the residential build commencing and new opportunities and increased production capacity will be created.

Selectric has contracted Fletcher-Rae to architecturally design the proposed residential development, working closely with planning consultants, Euan Kellie Property Solutions, and under the advisement of Urban Vision, a partner of Salford City Council. Co-Founder of Fletcher-Rae, Andrew Rae, provides insight into the appearance of the development.

“ The proposed development is predominantly planned in red brick, referencing the Victorian buildings in the area, with grey cladding incorporated on the top floors, a striking contrast to visually reduce the scale of the building. There’s two distinctive blocks and the spaces in- between the two buildings have been carefully crafted to provide private terraces, as well as a hard and soft landscaped courtyard.”

Selectric’s plans not only consider their own business growth but also complement the ongoing regeneration project for the wider Ordsall area and contribute to the increasing demand for housing in the city by defining a new residential quarter alongside the river.

Unpaid debt warning

A debt recovery expert is advising businesses on the options available if outstanding debts owed them remain unpaid.

Recent figures from Bacs Payment Schemes Ltd, the company behind Direct Debit, showed that SMEs in the UK are owed more than £14billion.

Most businesses are able to successfully chase these debts by invoicing early or other methods, but it may become necessary to turn to the County Court for a judgment which will formally decide the debtor does indeed owe the money.

Sharon Walker, debt recovery manager at regional law firm Napthens, reports that if a judgment remains unpaid, despite repeated requests, a creditor has the option to continue with further enforcement – such as through an enforcement officer.

To do this a judgment obtained in the County Court can be transferred to the High Court and registered as a High Court judgment.

Sharon explained: “A High Court enforcement officer can execute a County Court judgment over £600. Anything under that amount is dealt with by the court bailiff.

“Enforcement officers earn their fees from the debtor when they collect, and as a result do have higher collection rates.

“There are strict rules for the officers to follow, such as not being able to enter a home by force, between 9pm and 6am or through anything other than the door.

“Before any attendance is made to collect a debt, a notice of enforcement will be sent to the debtor to give them an opportunity to pay, and it is common to find that if a debtor has ignored previous requests for payment, a visit by a court bailiff or enforcement officer can often prompt a debtor to agree a payment arrangement.

“Any businesses facing unpaid debts should take professional advice early to ensure they use the correct approach.”

HOME ADVANTAGE FOR FAMILIES IN PRESTWICH

0

FAMILIES who fear being forced out of Prestwich by rising house prices are being given a helping hand by Redrow.

The homebuilder has got a number of properties at its Woodland View development for sale under its unique Advantage scheme, which means they can be bought for just 75% of the market value providing people fulfil a strict criteria.

“We are very much aware of how hard it can be to get on to the property ladder, so it’s important that our developments offer different ways to help people achieve home ownership,” explains Claire Jarvis, sales director for Redrow Homes.

“And it’s why our developments like Woodland View include a range of affordable homes designed to help local people stay in the area, thereby strengthening the community. Communities can be created anywhere, but they are considerably enhanced by people who have lived in the area for many years and whose families have lived here too. They are invested in a place and interested in making it a better place – for everyone.”

Redrow is offering a range of 24 homes for sale under the Advantage umbrella at Woodland View, off Pinfold Drive. Ten of them will be four-bedroom Kenilworth family-sized homes, of which four are available now.

“It is important that we don’t just make our Advantage homes available for younger first-time buyers,” adds Claire, “It’s vital to provide for the family market too, whether that’s to accommodate growing numbers of children or, simply, children who are growing up and need that private space and independence.

“In an area like Prestwich, which is very much on the up following a massive town centre regeneration scheme, it becomes even more difficult as demand forces prices up even further and people can be left with no alternative but to move away to be able to afford a home of their own.”

The four Kenilworth homes currently available are offered at the discounted price of £213,750 – a massive saving of £71,250 – for those who fit the specified criteria set by Bury Council within whose authority the homes are being built: that means families who need the extra space with a joint income of circa £60,000 (in order to confirm eligibility, the council will multiply gross annual income by four for single applicants or by 3.5 for joint applications).

Further qualifying factors include it being the family’s main residence and being able to show a need for the size of home being applied for (ie. a single person or couple will only be able to apply for a two-bedroom property). Certain considerations can be waived if a property has been completed and there is no interest from other qualifying families, but buyers do have to be on the council’s affordable housing waiting list to access the homes and they must have lived in the area for at least six months.

“Unlike other incentives like Help to Buy, the 25% discount does not have to be paid back at a later day. All we ask if that people who use Advantage pass the discount on to similar qualifying people when they come to sell,” Claire says.

Woodland View features a range of two, three and four-bedroom homes from Redrow’s Arts & Crafts-inspired Heritage Collection, which combines traditional craftsmanship exteriors based on the popular era with bright, spacious interiors.

The three-storey Kenilworth townhouse is an integral part of that collection with plenty of period-style features outside and a modern, well-appointed interior within. Its accommodation includes an open plan kitchen and dining area, lounge, cloakroom and laundry room on the ground floor; three bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor; and a sumptuous master bedroom with en-suite spanning the entire top floor.

Other properties due to be offered under the Advantage umbrella at a later date include a pair of four-bedroom detached Stratfords, four Broadway three-bedroom terraces and eight two-bedroom apartments, ensuring plenty of variety for local buyers.

Other three and four-bedroom detached open market properties are coming soon.

Woodland View is close to a Tesco superstore and residents can take advantage of the independent shops, bars and restaurants of Prestwich village centre

Less than four miles from Manchester, the development is situated just off junction 17 of the M60, so close to the extensive motorway network. It is also on the doorstep of Phillips Park, with its extensive woodland and open spaces, which makes it ideal for families and professionals who want to commute to work but get that work/life balance for a better quality of life.

Prestwich is part of the Manchester Metrolink Tram system, with regular trams every few minutes during the rush hour, connecting to Manchester in around 17 minutes and Bury in 19.
