DP World Tour: Irish Open – preview, odds, how to watch and prediction

Rory McIlroy will be the big draw when he tees it up in Northern Ireland for the first time in five years this week.

McIlroy headlines a field at the Irish Open that also includes the likes of Shane Lowry, Seamus Power, Robert McIntyre and Nicolai Hojgaard but none of the elite Americans, who have opted out of taking on the challenging links at Royal County Down.

Regularly voted the best course in the world, it is a lay-out that can destroy the best – as evidenced by McIlroy’s opening-round 80 when the DP World Tour last visited in 2015.

The Ulsterman is relishing the chance to return, however, and play in front of friends and family.

He told UTV: “To be home and stay in my own house and see my friends and all that – I’ve only been here for a day – but it’s been great.

“Obviously, really looking forward to the week. I love coming back and playing, even if it’s just with my mates, coming playing at RCD or playing Portrush, so to be able to play a tournament… I didn’t do so well last time so I’m trying to improve on that.

“I always appreciate the unbelievable support that I get from home and everyone around here. But I haven’t played as well as I want to when I come back and play these events at home. So hopefully, this year that can change.”

Who is the favourite?

bet365 have McIlroy as favourite, followed by Lowry and Aaron Rai. All odds correct as of 1pm on September 10.

Rory McIlroy 13/2

Shane Lowry 11/1

Aaron Rai 16/1

Robert McIntyre 18/1

Bernd Wiesberger 25/1

Nicolai Hojgaard 25/1

Thriston Lawrence 28/1

Ryan Fox 30/1

Thomas Detry 30/1

Seamus Power 33/1

How to Watch

You can catch all the action on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Golf.

The coverage starts on Thursday at 1pm UK BST and continues throughout the weekend.

Prediction

While predicting the winner of events on the PGA TOUR is relatively straightforward – you just plump for Scottie Scheffler – the DP World Tour is a different animal.

Add in the fact it’s a links course and wind is forecast and it becomes something of a lottery.

With balls being blown off course and unpredictable lies, the ability to scramble becomes all the more important.

With that in mind, McIntyre may be a good shout. The lefty ranks 15th in the scrambling category on the PGA TOUR and has plenty of experience on links courses given his Scottish heritage.

Ryan Fox is another to watch, as is Power.

The real winner, however, is likely to be the TV viewer, who can sit back, relax, take in the scenery and watch some of the world’s best take on one of the hardest tests in the game.

Thug who strangled detective is jailed

0

A teenager who robbed a young boy of his coat and bag in Bury, has been jailed for three years.

Muhammad Zakir Arif (18) of Harrington Close, Bury, appeared at Manchester Crown Court on Monday.

He admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, strangulation or suffocation, two counts of possession of a bladed article in a public place, and two counts of failure to comply with a Section 49 Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act notice.

The three-year sentence also included two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, which Arif had been found guilty of during a previous trial which took place in November 2023.

In January 2023, Arif approached a young boy in Cornwall Drive, Bury, and produced a ‘zombie style knife’ before forcing the victim to hand over his bag and jacket. The attack was recorded on video and later circulated on social media.

This followed a similar robbery committed by Arif earlier that same month.

In February 2024, whilst on court bail awaiting sentencing for the robbery offences, Arif was travelling in a taxi in Hulme when the car was stopped, and he was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. In his possession at the time of his arrest was a machete, a large zombie knife and two mobile phones.

Having refused to provide the passcodes for the two mobile phones, Arif was served with a Section 49 RIPA Court Order, which compels a suspect to provide access to their electronic devices or face prosecution. The application for the order had been granted in the interests of national security but he still refused to provide access.

Whilst in custody, Arif was questioned by detectives several times and, on one occasion, he leapt forward at the interviewer before launching a brutal attack. After punching the detective in the head numerous times, he then proceeded to violently strangle the officer before he could be restrained.

Detective superintendent Andy Meeks, head of investigations for Counter Terrorism Policing North West, said: “Today’s sentencing is the culmination of months of dedicated work by the investigation team to ensure Muhammad Zakir Arif faced the consequences of his actions.

“Machetes and zombie knives have no place on our streets so we’re pleased that two dangerous weapons have been seized and will be destroyed. However, his offending didn’t stop after his arrest and he would go on to repeatedly flout a legal order, refuse to answer questions, and violently attack somebody as they tried to do their job.

“Thankfully the detective has fully recovered and returned to work, having been closely supported by colleagues across the team.

“We welcome the sentence imposed by the judge today.”

Adrian Newey: Aston Martin F1 title is ‘goal’ as design boss announces move

Adrian Newey believes Aston Martin F1 have “all the key pieces of infrastructure” to win the Formula One world championship after the team confirmed the revered designer will join them from March 2025.

The 65-year-old’s future has been the subject of intense speculation his announcement in May that he was leaving Red Bull after 19 years, masterminding seven F1 drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles during his tenure.

Newey said he had been “hugely inspired and impressed” by the “passion and commitment” of Aston Martin’s owner, Lawrence Stroll.

Newey: Aston Martin ‘great environment’

“Lawrence is determined to create a world-beating team,” he explained. “He is the only majority team owner who is actively engaged in the sport.

“His commitment is demonstrated in the development of the new AMR Technology Campus and wind tunnel at Silverstone, which are not only state-of-the-art but have a layout that creates a great environment to work in.

“Together with great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the key pieces of infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team and I am very much looking forward to helping reach that goal.”

Aston Martin have given Newey a five-year contract worth up to a possible £30m a year, according to BBC Sport.

He will work with two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who is under contract until the end of 2026, and team-mate Lance, who is Stroll’s son.

Stroll: Newey ‘the best’

“As soon as Adrian became available, we knew we had to make it happen,” said Canadian billionaire Stroll.

“This is huge news. Adrian is the best in the world at what he does – he is at the top of his game – and I am incredibly proud that he is joining [us].

“It’s the biggest story since the Aston Martin name returned to the sport and another demonstration of our ambition to build a Formula One team capable of fighting for world championships.

“Our initial conversations confirmed that there was a shared desire to collaborate in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“We mean business – and so does he. Adrian shares our hunger and ambition, he believes in this project and he will help us write the next chapter in Aston Martin Aramco’s Formula One story.”

Is this marketing’s most desirable role?

A recruitment specialist has claimed marketers applying for entry level or middle management roles are looking for more than the perfect job, they want the perfect location – and it’s NOT London.

The comments were made after Cumbrian family business Bells of Lazonby launched its a job search to find an assistant brand manager to join its marketing team.

The role, based in Penrith on the edge of the Lakeland hills, will involve working across one of the UK’s leading free-from sweet bakery brands ‘We Love Cake’ which is available in supermarkets and food service outlets across the UK and Australia.

Sophie O’Brian, founder of Pollen Careers, states 10 to 15 years ago junior marketers were centring themselves in the capital city – with a belief system that tiresome work ethic, presenteeism and a life in the big smoke was the only way to get ahead. Knock on 2024, Gen Z want work life balance, a desk with a view and a role that fits into their lifestyle not the other way round.

Last month, Bells of Lazonby, a third-generation family bakery working across wholesale and retail, launched its job opening on LinkedIn and within days saw a surge of young talent hoping to land job in an idyllic setting.

Sat on the edge of the Lake District, Lazonby makes for one of the most beautiful commutes in the country (for anyone working across the county). With the flexibility of working from home and in the office, the role promises the ultimate office with a view every day and the ability to down tools and head into nature when the day is wrapped.

But why would a young-in-their-career marketer look to work in a sleepy Cumbrian town? It’s the death of the millennial ‘beanbag office’ gimmick. Today, recruitment specialist Sophie O’Brien says, people in their early careers want to prioritise their working mental health.

She said: “We see a big change from millennial jobseekers who coveted big city jobs for the bustling lifestyle and big-name employers on their CVs. Today many junior job seekers or middle managers are more open to rural roles because of the flexibility and a healthier lifestyle.

“Finding a role can be incredibly competitive, but family businesses can offer a different culture to big corporations. The biggest barrier, often, is that so many jobseekers are unaware that such positions exist.

“Ultimately, Gen Zs aren’t necessarily looking to climb the corporate ladder as fast as they can at global corporations like previous generations were, they want jobs that respect their lifestyle, offer a sustainable pace of work and a job they can truly enjoy. Smaller companies in rural locations can offer the chance for people to really grow.”

The role on offer

The assistant brand manager role, which is still open to applicants, will be responsible for developing and implanting strategic brand plans for We Love Cake. They are looking for someone with a background in sales or marketing, with a business or marketing degree being marked as desirable but not essential.

As well as its Cumbrian splendour, the role offers 33 days annual leave, access to an Employee Assistance Programme through Health Assured, cycle to Work Scheme (what a place to ride!), gym membership… and most importantly discounted cakes.

Head of marketing, Josh Boydell-Smith for Bells of Lazonby, who relocated from Manchester six years ago to take on his current role, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity for the right person to really make a difference to a growing portfolio of products. We are a small team, so anyone taking on the role has the chance have real autonomy of their ideas and the chance to learn on the job.

“We are looking for the right fit, someone who is passionate about bakery – a person who is ready to embrace the magic of working on a disruptive brand that reaches far further than the Lake District.’

We Love Cake has seen rapid growth in recent years growing over 280% since 2020 in value and volume. Operating in UK Frozen Foodservice, Australian and UK retail, it is on track with its mission to become the biggest brand in value sales in Free From Sweet Bakery in the UK having achieved this already in Australia.

Initially launched in 2012 in UK foodservice, the brand became a success due to its quality, taste credentials and allergen integrity. Having been a disruptor to UK retail in 2019, We Love Cake was selling under 1,000 packs per week, by the end of 2023 it sold over 25,000 packs in UK retail in one week.

If you are interested in the role or recruitment opportunities you can apply by sending your CV to: [email protected] quoting assistant brand manager.

Essential Services you Need for Smooth Removals in the City

0

So, you’re relocating to the big city – or maybe you already live there but have a move planned to a new area – either way, moving amongst the hustle and bustle is no small feat. In fact, a city move can be one of the more stressful things you do, as it involves a lot of planning, coordination, and administration (along with packing and actual moving).  To set your next move in the city up for success, you need to get ahead of the process, book the right people, and set the right time to handle the hassle for you. That’s why in this guide, you’ll find a detailed overview of all the services you could require when transitioning from A to B, making your house move as seamless and stress-free as possible.

Professional Movers

Whether you need north or south London removals, opt for a company that can offer extensive and trustworthy city experience. All moves require different things, depending on where they are. Moving companies who specialise in city moves are aware of the challenges faced, restrictions they may need to overcome and how to navigate busy roads, times and areas. You should also opt for a professional moving firm that provides secure packing services. This not only saves you time running all over your current house boxing and bubble wrapping – but it also provides peace of mind that all of your belongings, fragile or not – are safe, secure and transported in the best hands. Finally, when it comes to moving with a removal company, consider the one that offers insurance on your valuables; this offers security in case of accidental damage in unforeseen circumstances.

Supplies & Equipment

Quality packing materials, including strong-hold tape, boxes, tools, sack trucks, labels, protective sheets and more. The list is endless. So you must find a reliable supplier. Not only that, having equipment of such high quality will make your move that little bit less stressful, knowing your items are better protected in transit and from any accidents that may occur. Many moving services online provide you with the best speciality boxes to suit your various needs, be that for clothing, valuable artwork and ornaments or technology. It’s also important to note that you can rent larger pieces of equipment, like your straps and sack trucks, by the hour or day to avoid huge upfront expenses. This is especially useful if you do not plan to move again in the near future, as these pieces of equipment are really only useful when moving.

Storage Solutions

For some people, there may be a period of time between moving out and moving in dates; therefore, short-term storage facilities are required to keep furniture and boxes safe while you stay with friends and family or at a hotel. If your new home isn’t yet ready due to renovations, or you are downsizing and require storage in the long term, these are available, too. You can find many storage facilities around London with security and 24/7 access for peace of mind that ensures valuables, be they technology, antiques or personal items, are safe from theft and damage. These storage providers are also often temperature-controlled to avoid issues like damp and humidity damaging items. While these companies tend to be reliable, it’s always sensible to gain insurance for the duration of the stay; in fact, many reputable storage companies enforce this.

Cleaning Services

All moves, be that rentals or ownership, require a clean, both of the property you move out of and, most likely, the one you move into. Hiring a cleaning service to prepare your new home and ensuring it is ready for your belongings to be moved into will save you the hassle and time of doing so yourself. For those moving out of a rental property, in order to receive your deposit back, a deep clean may be required of you; therefore, hiring a professional team to do so will ensure it is of the standards that your landlord desires.

Utility & Bills

You will need to be in frequent communication with a number of utility services during this time, be that for switching your water, gas and electric suppliers, setting up your new council tax bills and changing the address across all relevant parties (banks, driving licences, subscriptions, etc.). You will also most definitely want internet in your new home, so getting prepared and booking your internet installation date around the time you move allows you to get back to working, watching and browsing in no time.

Other Services To Consider

  • Vehicle & Transportation
  • Building repairs
  • Furniture assembly
  • Banking
  • Pet sitters
  • Decorators

In conclusion, there is a lot of planning, consideration, and support needed when moving house, especially in or around London. With the right services, professionals, and mindset, you can get from A to B in a safe, reliable, and seamless manner. Using experienced movers, cleaners, transport, and handyman services not only saves time and effort when moving but also allows you to settle into your new home with peace of mind.

Get prepared for your next move, and book the services you require today. Don’t let the opportunity for a streamlined and successful city move pass you by.

The Impact of Technology in Simplifying Business Processes

0

Efficiency is key in all aspects of life. However, working efficiently, especially in fast-paced environments and customer-facing industries, is essential to success. Thankfully, technology in recent years has helped pave the way for transformative and simplified business processes, making the day-to-day running of a company a little bit easier. From remaining compliant and competitive to automating routine tasks and financial management, the right software, apps, subscriptions and tools can set you up for long-term success. In fact, for most businesses and industries, technology has become an integral part of the strategy. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the real impact this has had in this guide on simplifying processes in the workplace using technology.

Automation Of Everyday Tasks:

  • With technology integrated into your business, you can take tasks, including calendar management, job scheduling, reporting and data collection, off of your employees job description, allowing a software to do it for them.
  • Automations like this are a secure and consistent way to operate business admin tasks while minimising human error and guaranteeing accuracy.
  • With these tasks handled, your team can focus on what they do best, i.e. the more creative, strategic and innovative projects and tasks.
  • Tools, including CRM, can streamline your business processes, including communications and sales.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Through technology, you can streamline your real-time communication with the likes of collaborative platforms, instant messaging and video conferences. These platforms can integrate with other business tools for an all-in-one easy access workflow while reducing redundant data entry.
  • Cloud based solutions allow your team,  no matter how big or small, to collaborate on jobs, projects and internal process updates across the globe.
  • Enhancing your business communications through technology leads to more flexibility and responsiveness across all levels of the teams, as well as improving relationships between staff and clients.

Finances, Quotes & Invoices:

  • Businesses that provide quotes and invoices to customers can simplify their processes through a job quoting software. This technology takes the long hours and difficult sums out of billing all while guaranteeing accuracy with the numbers and details – crucial when maintaining a seamless cash flow, credibility and customer satisfaction.
  • These platforms can usually integrate with other apps like SumUp or PayPal, too, allowing you to have consistent and updated financial data across all areas of your business.
  • Automated invoice systems also make tracking payments, sending payment reminders and generating financial reports a piece of cake!

Data Management & Security:

  • Technology can provide the required processes and tools needed to retrieve, manage, analyse and organise your data across the board, allowing business stakeholders and leaders to make informed decisions for long-term success.
  • With these features you can store and protect huge amounts of data in digital formats with quick and easy access available only to those who require it. These database systems are 100% safe and trusted, improving your business credibility and data-security.
  • In the case of an unforeseen circumstance, or issue, having regular backups and disaster recovery solutions to hand allows you to guarantee no data is lost or stolen from you.

Inventory & Supply Chains:

  • Most businesses will run with stock, equipment and suppliers, with a need for real-time inventory tracking and shipment management. With technology you can now optimise supply chains and minimise delays in your workflow.
  • Automated systems can offer features, including restocking processes, so you have what you need when you need it without having to do anything at all.
  • These platforms also offer analytic reports and tools that give accurate representation on costs associated with over ordering stock and/or stock limitations.
  • Suppliers are a significant part of successful business operations, so effective communication is key. Software today can improve communication for a smoother, seamless and responsive supply chain.

So, what do we know? Technology is an indispensable tool that businesses cannot afford to overlook. Not only does it streamline productivity for the entire workforce, but it also automates routine tasks, eliminates the guesswork of financial processes, improves communication across teams, and mitigates data and security risks. Ultimately, investing in the right software can ensure you operate more efficiently, save money across the board, and remain ahead of the competition in your field of work.

Are you ready to focus more on the growth of your business and less on the finer details of admin and paperwork? Then, it’s time to implement some tech!

Protecting Your Creative Works in the Digital Age: A Step-by-Step Guide

0

The digital age brings unprecedented opportunities and immense challenges for creators in the United Kingdom. In many respects, sharing your work with a global audience via the Internet has never been easier. Simultaneously, the web multiplies the opportunities for unauthorised uses and IP theft. Protecting your creative works is important enough so that you can maintain complete control over their usage while ensuring recognition and rewards for your effort. Here, we show you the core of protecting your intellectual property in the UK.

Understanding Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)

Before I dive deep into the details of protective measures, I need to mention the various descriptions of IPR available under UK law. Intellectual property concerns creations of the mind- artistic works, literature, music, inventions, and brand names. The principal types of IPRs applicable to creative works are:

  1. Copyright: It gives the creator of original literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, including films, broadcasts, and software programs, an exclusive right to copy them.
  2. Trademarks: These comprise symbols, names, logos, and slogans that identify and distinguish goods or services.
  3. Patents: These protect inventions from obtaining for the inventor the exclusive right to their use, manufacture, and, eventually, sale for a period of, say, up to 20 full years.
  4. Design Rights: These protect how things look, including their shape, configuration, pattern, and ornamentation.
  5. Trade Secrets: Protect confidential information about the business that provides the company a competitive edge.

As a general proposition, most creators will be mainly concerned with copyright, although trademarks, design rights, and other IPRs may also be important depending on what is being created.

Step 1: Copyright Automatically Applies

In the UK and everywhere else, copyright arises automatically when your work is created and fixed in some tangible medium. This automatically means that the very moment you write a poem or a jingle or create an artistic piece, you hold the copyright to that particular work. One does not register one’s copyright in the UK, unlike in some countries, such as the USA.

Critical Benefits of Automatic Copyright:

– Legal Safeguard: Your work is safeguarded under automatic copyright against unauthorised reproduction, distribution, or public showcasing without your permission.

– Moral Rights: In the UK, you shall further benefit from moral rights, allowing you to identify yourself as the creator of your work. You may also prevent unwanted treatment of your work that could harm your reputation or honour.

Although it is not a requirement for registration in the UK, you can support your claim using evidence of your date of creation and authorship. This might be in the form of drafts, emails, or other records where the evolution of the work can be traced.

Step 2: Watermarking and Metadata

Watermark and metadata your digital content to deter unauthorised use.

A watermark is a visible mark placed on a digital image, video, or document, such as a logo or text. They say, “This content is protected—so back away.

Metadata: Embedded information within digital files comprised of author name, copyright information, date of creation, etc. This provides backup information that can prove ownership if needed. This must be searched for in the contents’ properties as the information is not visible on its default settings.

Step 3: Use Creative Commons Licences

If you’d like to share your work with others but would like some control over how it’s used, Creative Commons licences are for you. A CC licence provides you with a way to permit people to use your work under certain conditions, such as non-commercially or with required attribution.

In the UK, licensing work under a Creative Commons licence is easy. Simply choose the licence most appropriate for you and your work and apply the relevant licence notice alongside your content. You can even utilise tools on the Creative Commons website that generate a licence badge and code to include with your work.

Step 4: Monitor and Enforce Your Rights

Protecting your creative works does not stop at safeguarding your rights; you must continue observing how they are used and taking steps against infringement.

  1. Set Up Alerts: Use MeSH headings or Google Alerts to track when and where your work is mentioned online. This helps in detecting unauthorised use.
  2. Use Reverse Image Search: Google Images and TinEye.com enabled you to see where your images were being used without your permission.
  3. Track Social Media: Always be on the lookout. Social networks are looking for copyright infringement, and most have ways of reporting it.
  4. Serve Takedown Notices: If your work is being used without permission, you can serve a takedown notice under the European Union’s e-Commerce Directive, which the UK continues to follow after Brexit. Most online platforms and websites will have a system to manage such requests.
  5. Legal Action: If needed, you must take legal action against infringers. But before doing so, consult an Intellectual Property Solicitor. They’ll let you know your options and possibly the cost ramifications thereof.

Step 5: Use Contracts and Licensing Agreements

Anytime you publish your work to another party, especially for commercial use of any kind, you need to set up a licensing agreement that specifies the terms of the agreement. As you license, sell, or collaborate in producing your work, have an agreement between parties that will spell out rights and confirm mutual expectations.

Elements of Agreement to Cover

Scope of Use: In what way can the work be used?

– Payment Terms: Outline how and when you will be paid for the work

– Attribution Requirements: Describe any requirements you have concerning being credited for the work

– Termination Clauses: Succinctly put, describe how the contract can be terminated

For customised contracts, especially for complex agreements, intellectual property lawyers are the best for the job

Nissanka hits brilliant ton as Sri Lanka thrash England

Pathum Nissanka completed a wonderful century as Sri Lanka ended England’s 100 per cent record in Tests this summer with an emphatic eight-wicket win at The Oval.

The tourists started day four requiring another 125 runs to win with nine wickets in hand as they sought a first Test win over England in a decade.

They achieved it with few alarms, reaching 219 for two, as England’s attack again looked toothless despite favourable conditions in South London.

Helped by Nissanka’s 127 not out – a knock made from just 124 balls – Sri Lanka cruised to victory although England still won the series 2-1 following earlier victories at Old Trafford and Lord’s.

The manner of the defeat won’t sit well, however, with coach Brendon McCullum or captain Ben Stokes, who is out of action due to a hamstring injury and had to watch from the balcony as Ollie Pope led the side.

England were careless with the bat, a first-innings collapse starting the malaise that continued with a shambolic effort of 156 in just 34 overs in their second knock. The bowlers fared little better, particularly late yesterday and early today with Nissanka looking in total command.

England were given a sniff when Kusal Mendis departed this morning for 39 – Shoaib Bashir taking a brilliant catch in the deep off the bowling of Gus Atkinson – to leave Sri Lanka on 108 for two but the experience of Angelo Mathews came to the fore with a steady 32 not out to help his side home.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva said: “There was lots of emotion in the team room. It’s one of the happiest moments of my career.

“We had a tough time previously and to come back here and get a win in England under English conditions is good for me, my team and my country.

“The moment Pathum Nissanka came on he performed well. It’s a good moment and I think we can beat other teams in their home country.”

Pope admitted England were not at their best. He said: “We felt we were in a really good position and were outplayed for the last day and a session. We didn’t bat our best yesterday and didn’t bowl our best. We should have been able to put a lot more on the board with the bat.

“We could have liked to have 400 on board in that first dig but felt there was fair bit in wicket and felt we could bowl them out for a fair bit less than us. We had a poor day three and credit to Sri Lanka as well.

“We weren’t at our best but that was a brilliant knock from Nissanka as well. There are a couple of good lessons we can learn from day three.”

Myerson Solicitors becomes Manchester’s first 100% employee-owned law firm

Myerson Solicitors – a Top 200 UK law firm based in Altrincham – has announced its
conversion to a 100% Employee-Owned Business (EOB), becoming the first law firm in Greater Manchester to do so.

With 150 employees, Myerson now ranks among the largest employee-owned organisations in the UK.

Founded in 1982 by Neil Myerson, the firm serves both business and private clients
nationally and locally, having achieved 15% organic growth for the financial year ending August 31, 2024, with revenues reaching £17.5 million.

Myerson is now 100% owned by its employees through an Employee Ownership Trust
(EOT). A new Board of Trustees has been created, with the appointment of Steve Tudge, Joanne Evans, and James Birch — who are tasked with ensuring the organisation is managed in the best interests of all its employees.

Meanwhile, the existing management board, under the leadership of chief executive officer (CEO) Carl Newton, will continue to oversee Myerson’s operations and strategy.

Additionally, the board will now include Jordanna Reynolds, the people director, to represent the HR function.

Commitment to independence

Myerson has always had a ‘people-first’ culture with the ethos to remain independent and only grow organically. Becoming 100% employee-owned reaffirms Myerson’s commitment to this and aligns with its core values of innovation, creativity, and being forward-thinking.

Myerson’s CEO, Carl Newton (pictured above), who joined the firm in 1995 and has witnessed its continuous growth, said: “We’ve always been bold and entrepreneurial. Becoming the first 100% employee-owned law firm in Manchester marks an exciting milestone for Myerson and for me personally, it’s a very proud moment.

“Becoming an Employee-Owned Business allows us to give every single employee a stake in our firm’s financial success; it empowers our people, attracts top talent, and reinforces our people-centric culture. In a market where we see numerous mergers and acquisitions by private equity houses and large national law firms, I am delighted that Myerson is making a strong statement, championing stability and independence.”

Increased employee engagement

Myerson employees will now benefit from tax-free bonuses, greater stability and continuity, and increased investment in learning & development. A newly established Employee Engagement Committee will safeguard the firm’s culture and uphold Myerson as a great place to work.

Carl added: “Our clients will experience the same exceptional service they have come to expect, with the added assurance that all our employees are more engaged and committed than ever to ensuring the firm’s continued success.”

The legal sector: a late adopter of the EOT model

Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) have seen remarkable growth in the UK since their
introduction in 2014. The EOT model was designed to promote employee ownership by providing a tax-efficient mechanism for business owners to transfer ownership to their employees.

This policy intervention has generated a significant increase in the number of
employee-owned businesses. As of October 2023, the UK proudly boasts a thriving sector of over 1,650 employee-owned businesses, reflecting a strong movement towards inclusive and sustainable business practices.

However, the legal sector has been a late adopter: out of the 9,500 solicitors’ firms in the UK, only about 20 are employee-owned.

The legal work has been internally led by Corporate Partners Terry Moore and Akeel Latif. Terry Moore is an expert in the field of Employee Ownership Trusts, having acted for many clients, including other law firms.
