Doctor Who star Mandip Gill has announced her engagement after her boyfriend got down on one knee in what was a unique proposal.
Mandip was a prominent fixture of the Jodie Whittaker era of the BBC science fiction programme. She appeared in every episode of Jodie’s tenure as the Thirteenth Doctor’s assistant Yazmin Khan, in series 11, 12 and 13 as well as a series of specials in 2022.
The 37-year-old actress’s final outing on Doctor Who saw her helping the Doctor after the evil Master stole her body. In gripping scenes, she managed to rescue her from the Daleks and bring her back to the TARDIS.

Realising that the Doctor was about to regenerate. Yaz and the Doctor took one final trip together before she transformed into David Tennant, who became the Doctor for the second time. Yaz’s final scenes saw her invited to a support group with Graham [Bradley Walsh] and Dan [John Bishop] and other former companions to talk about their experiences with the Doctor.
Since leaving the series, Mandip has gone on to appear on a number of TV shows, including BBC children’s show Big Lizard, Channel 5 crime drama Cooper and Fry, and in Dawn French’s Can You Keep a Secret?
Taking to Instagram this week, Mandip revealed that her boyfriend popped the question with a Haribo jelly ring while they were enjoying a holiday together. Mandip has kept her partner’s identity a secret over the years.
Sharing a picture of the jelly wrapped around her finger, Mandip wrote: “Well ain’t that sweet #haribo #engaged @haribouki_.”
The comments section of Mandip’s post saw a number of her friends and fans rushing to congratulate her on the big news and have their say about the ring she’ll have to avoid temptation and eat.
Hollyoaks actress Nadine Mulkerrin, who plays Cleo McQueen, said: “She deserves the world, right this hen do…. @missjenjomet where we going.” Former Love Island host Laura Whitmore added: “Congrats xx.”
@mrs_annemarie_lewis wrote: “MY husband proposed to me with a Haribo ring and I’ve still got it 5 years later in a ring box.” @simisekhon_ posted: “She’s in her fiancée era.”
@whovian628 commented: “Congrats Mandip, praying for more blessings to come.” @markyg136 stated: “Aww congratulations!! Very similar to the ring I proposed with.”
Prior to finding global fame on Doctor Who, Mandip played the role of Phoebe McQueen from 2012 to 2015 on Hollyoaks. The adopted daughter of Jacqui McQueen [Claire Cooper] was killed off after Lindsey Butterfield [Sophie Austin] poured a large dose of potassium chloride in her medical drip.
Reflecting on the role on the Two Shot Podcast, Mandip said: “I made amazing friends, I lived in Liverpool in my own flat. It was a really good job, having a laugh, because it was like being at university but we were getting paid for it, just having a really good time and they offered me a new contract and I was like, ‘I have to be brave now’.”
