Carragher: Klopp exit announcement a ‘body blow’ for Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has described the news that Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the season as a “body blow” for the Reds, calling for the side to end the German’s trophy-laden reign on a high.

On Friday, Liverpool surprisingly announced that Klopp is to leave the club at the end of this campaign, having overseen a series of stunning successes since taking charge in October 2015.

The German has brought the Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Super Cup trophies to Anfield in nearly nine years at the helm.

However, in an emotional interview released by the club’s media channels on Friday, Klopp said he is “running out of energy” and needs a break.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss said: “I have no problem now, obviously, I knew already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now.

“I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.

“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”

Liverpool great Carragher expressed his surprise on social media after the news broke, writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: “This news was always going to be a body blow to the club whenever it came.

“I just thought it would be another few years away. What a manager, what a man, let’s go out with a bang Jurgen!”

Klopp could still win as many as four major trophies in what will be his final season on Merseyside.

Liverpool boast a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table and reached the EFL Cup final – where they will face Chelsea – on Wednesday. They also won their Europa League group before Christmas and will host Norwich City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
