Driving Business Excellence: Mastering the Art of Procuring and Efficiently Managing Your Fleet of Company Cars

A fleet of company cars can be a tremendous asset to a modern business. If your business is built around transport and mobility, then the benefits can be even more substantial. But getting the best from such a fleet means following a few essential tips. A well-formulated strategy will help you to draw in the best possible employees, and to make them as productive and safe as possible. But what should such a strategy look like?

Choosing the right model

The cars you choose will matter enormously to your final results. You’ll want to make your selection according to a few distinct criteria. How many miles are your drivers going to be putting in, and what special features are going to be of value to them? What is fuel efficiency like, and how much will the car cost to maintain over the long term? How much cargo space is on offer, and are there any advanced safety features that will reduce the likelihood of a collision?

It’s a good idea to look around the major showrooms. If you’re going to be buying the same model in large quantities, then getting acquainted with it in person is going to confer a lot of value. Local car dealers in places such as Leeds can be valuable sources of inspiration.

The purpose of a company car

When you’re making your decision, one consideration should be considered fundamental: what is this car going to be used for? Unless you have a solid answer to this question, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to make the right decision for your purposes. If the car is going to be used for meetings with clients, then it should send the right message about your business. This is where prestigious luxury manufacturers tend to be favoured. If the car is purely going to be used for commuting, then other factors, like fuel efficiency, might be paramount.

Integrating business travel into your company practices

When it comes to travel, it’s best to have a clear policy. If there’s any ambiguity, then you can be reasonably sure that you’ll run into disputes with your employees. Have clear guidelines on how fuel expenses and mileage are going to be dealt with. You might also lean into new technologies that track mileage via GPS. This will help you to not only cut costs, but build a culture of employee responsibility.

Employee responsibilities and safety

Employees who drive company cars should be able to get the best from them. A little bit of training can go a long way. There might be new and unfamiliar features available in a given car, which your employee might not be familiar with. Make sure that all of your policies when it comes to safety, maintenance and accident reporting are outlined clearly, right from the start.
