Root follows Stokes with IPL withdrawal

Joe Root has followed his England team-mate Ben Stokes in withdrawing from the 2024 IPL.

The Rajasthan Royals announced Root’s decision on Sunday, the day before the retention deadline, with the 32-year-old believed to be managing his workload after a hectic 2023 that saw him play in the IPL, the Hundred and the Ashes before England’s terrible World Cup campaign in India.

Rob Key, England’s managing director, stated after the World Cup that Root “needs a break”, and Rajasthan’s director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara said the Royals respect his decision not to play, having made three appearances in the 2023 edition.

“During our retention conversations, Joe informed us of his decision to not take part in IPL 2024,” Sangakkara said.

“Even in a short span of time, Joe was able to create such a positive impact on the franchise and the players around him.

“His energy around the group and the experience he brought to the Royals will be missed. We respect his decision totally and wish him success in everything he does.”
