Manchester shopping centre powers up its offering to shoppers

0

Shoppers in Manchester can now charge their electric cars in the short time it takes to pick up some groceries and grab a coffee.

InstaVolt has installed a pair of rapid electric car chargers at Lime Square shopping centre, meaning drivers can charge up while they do their shopping or visit the gym.

Unlike many other charging stations, drivers don’t need to have a card or subscription to use the InstaVolt stations; they simply tap their contactless credit or debit card, charge up and get back on the road.

Users are charged only for the electricity they use on a per-unit basis. There is no connection fee, minimum charge or monthly subscription fee.

James Shepherd, Estates Director at Dransfield Properties, which owns and manages Lime Square, said: “Sales of electric cars are on the rise and we’re really seeing that reflected on the ground here in Manchester. We’re delighted to be able to offer shoppers this new service. They’ll find the InstaVolt chargers very fast and easy to use.”

Tim Payne, CEO of InstaVolt, added: “As more and more people drive electric vehicles, having a network of places where they can charge up en route, such as shopping centres, will be incredibly important.

“We’re thrilled to bring our rapid chargers to shoppers in Manchester.”

Green light for Lidl’s regeneration plans in Stretford

0

Lidl’s £2.5m regeneration plans for the former PC World site on Chester Road in Stretford have been given the green light after Trafford Council’s Planning and Development Management Committee unanimously approved the scheme at last Thursday’s (14 June) meeting.

The plans will regenerate a derelict site, enhance the local economy; and deliver 40 employment opportunities for local residents. The scheme will significantly increase shopping choice in the local area, by delivering an award-winning, discount supermarket brand in Stretford. The store will also provide a clean and fresh shopping experience to meet the needs of customers, whilst ensuring a contemporary building design that complements the surrounding area.

Work on the site is expected to start in Autumn 2018 with the store scheduled to open in 2019.

Nick Harvey, Head of Property at Lidl UK, said: We are delighted that Trafford Council has approved our plans for a new Lidl store in Stretford. The local community has been fully behind the scheme and we are looking forward to starting work on the site shortly.

“Our plans will provide residents with a greater shopping choice and increased job opportunities in the area and marks the first step of our wider store investment plans in the Borough of Trafford.”

Tech Manchester hits 100 mentor milestone

Tech Manchester has reached a significant milestone this week after training its 100th mentor as part of its startup support scheme.

The not-for-profit initiative backed by UKFast currently has 165 people actively involved in its programme which offers free support and guidance to tech firms based in the region.

The roster of mentors is willing and able to deliver world-class support and guidance to startups.

“This is a significant milestone in our quest to help support the region’s startups,” said Tech Manchester programme lead Patricia Keating.

“We sit neatly in the fantastic startup support ecosystem that already exists in Manchester and as a community we are working to ensure there is support along every stage of a startup’s lifecycle.

“Our ambition is to train and deliver 250 mentors into the region by 2020. Our mentors are already having a massive impact and that is only going to accelerate as the programme develops.”

Following the success of Tech Manchester’s first two ‘Meet the Mentor’ matching events, a third is planned for 10am – 1pm on 28th and 29th June at UKFast Campus. It has more than 30 mentors waiting in the wings to offer their support to new entrepreneurs.

The event offers startups the opportunity to meet up to six prospective mentors with the skills and knowledge they require – and then to choose the mentor that best meets their mission.

Once mentors are selected, they embark on a six-to-12-month journey during which they will identify and explore goals and objectives.

Tech Manchester has attracted more than 500 people to its workshops and mentor matching events so far this year. It is signed up to be the anchor tenant in UKFast’s new co-working space FastForward, which launches in September at UKFast Campus.

FastForward has also signed up its first tenant after Social Chain’s former head of product Sean Brown chose to base his eCommerce platform Mercarto there.

“FastForward gives Tech Manchester the space to bring its free programmes together,” said UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones.

“The businesses in there have access to creative resources like recording and TV studios, which adds real value for them – as well as the support they can tap into on demand.”

Tech Manchester is also inviting would-be mentors to attend the next intake of training in September ahead of a fourth matching event and working on an academic study to assess the impact of mentor programmes on business ecosystems.

A co-working hub has been established at the Abito building in Salford Quays.

An architect, a forensic accountant and a property fund executive have taken space in Abito at Clippers Quay and talks are under way with other parties.

The initiative is the brainchild of the partners at investment group Infinity, which is based at the building.

Their aim is to bring together around a dozen like-minded businesspeople whose activities complement one another.

Infinity, whose partners are Daniel Finestein, Sarah Butler and Phil Vickers, moved to Abito in 2016 from Manchester city centre.

Group business development director Paul Wogan said the co-working model enables tenants to share contacts and business opportunities.

He said: “The Abito building is in an ideal location, in terms of being close to the motorway network and the Metrolink system, with ample parking and with a view of the Quays.

“It’s close to Manchester city centre yet affords the opportunity to look out over the water with a host of amenities nearby.

“In addition, it is an exciting time for Clippers Quay, with a £100m scheme by residential landlord Grainger under way and plans to construct a 34-storey tower which will be the tallest building at Salford Quays.”

Paul added: “From a commercial point of view, co-working is cost-effective and offers the potential to win new business by collaborating with the other professionals based here.

“Our goal is for the hub to be a vibrant place where ideas are born and deals are done.”

Paul said the Abito hub would suit specialists in areas such as financial advice, law and tax, adding that he expects new arrivals in the near future.

Among the facilities are offices, meeting rooms, a breakout area, a kitchen and IT support.

As well as serving as Infinity’s headquarters, Abito houses property sales and lettings agency Beyond Residential and The Buzz Rooms, a bespoke viewing facility for researchers conducting focus groups.

Tech Returners launches new 15-week course to empower people into technology industry

Tech Returners, an initiative which develops skills and provides training and development for people looking to return to work after a break, has announced the launch of a new 15-week course aimed at those looking to refresh their knowledge before they return to roles in tech, use transferable skills to enter the tech industry or start a business in the sector.

Beginning in September 2018 at PWC, No.1 Spinningfields, Manchester city centre, a range of tech and Returners’ coaches will teach an in-depth course programme with the initial three weeks covering computer science, followed by five weeks of UI Development and five weeks of Cloud and Data development, supported by continuous personal development throughout the course in areas such a career planning, self-awareness and team effectiveness. There will also be weekend workshops on one weekend day every month to help with their understanding of the different elements of tech such as UX and UI testing and understanding different languages.

Tech Returners was founded in 2017 by Beckie Taylor, who is also co-founder of CLOS Consultancy – a company which support tech businesses scale through the alignment of people and technology. Beckie focuses on strategic HR talent and performance management, and is also co-founder of Women in Tech North, which now has over 720 members since starting in 2016. A returner herself, Beckie created Tech Returners after her own personal experience of trying to find a way to balance both work and family so she could help others to come back to tech after a career break.

Following two free taster coding courses held at Barclays’ Eagle Labs at The Landing in Media City in October 2017 and April 2018, Beckie knew there was an appetite from people, predominantly women, wanting to get back into the world of work post-children. There were also dads, carers, ex-offenders, and those who have experienced long-term illness, all wanting to learn more and empower their own journeys back into the working world.

“Tech Returners is designed to break down the barriers for people returning to, or starting out in tech. We offer an introduction to coding, as well as leadership mentoring and personal development guidance. The courses and the app are themed around discovering and developing skills, building a new network and embarking on a successful career unique to you. Tech Returners provides a supportive learning environment and shows that it is possible to return, that previous experience and skills are valued and really that we are just here to support you in your journey back to working in tech – whatever form it takes,” Beckie explains.

The initiative is also aiming to address the issue of women who, when returning to work, are in many cases forced to return to lower skilled or lower paid jobs and struggle to find flexible working opportunities to combine with childcare. It will also seek to help the skills gap within the tech sector.

A report released by PWC in 2016 found that returning women are generally underused in the workplace, paying a penalty for having a career break. This includes highly skilled professionals and research highlights that there is a £1bn potential of women returners to the marketplace.

Tech Returners has received support from a range of businesses in the region, as well as a personal endorsement from Richard Jeffrey of Business Growth Hub. The talent skills gap in tech is top of the Northern Powerhouse agenda and focuses on untapping the talent pool of those returning to the sector. Greater Manchester as a whole has a set a 50/50 diversity target to meet by 2025 and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s GM Strategy aims include tackling the skills challenge, helping with GM productivity, providing inclusivity and ‘good’ jobs.

As part of the course, the returners will also have the chance to work on live briefs in partnership with Tech 4 Good – a community-based organisation in Manchester that aims to promote, encourage and raise awareness of the benefits of using technology for good and how to act more ethically in the tech sector.

Alongside Beckie in the Tech Returners team sit tech coaches James Heggs and Laura Kenny. James has over 11 years’ experience as a software engineer and DevOps consultant for both public and private sector businesses, and will be teaching returners cloud infrastructure, development processes and data manipulation. Laura is an experienced software developer and was nominated for the Northern Power Women ‘One to Watch’ award, she will oversee UI development and returner mentoring.

Laura said: “I have first-hand experience of changing careers and getting to grips with a new industry, along with all the excitement and imposter syndrome moments that come along with it. I’m passionate about how learning to code has changed my life and I’m really looking forward to helping other people who are also on that journey or considering embarking on it. Tech Returners not only gives people a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, but also to build a supportive network and gain confidence through working collaboratively in a non-judgmental and fun environment.”

The paid-for course will take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am – 4pm with a remote day of learning on Wednesdays so returners can fit around their schedules of childcare, commuting and other commitments. There are also weekend workshops held by Tech Returners’ coaches and volunteer mentors.

The first course has 16 places and is priced £3,500 for the 15-week term. The team is already in talks with businesses in the region to offer sponsored scholarships for returners, as well as creche facilities on site.
