Cricket World Cup: Morgan hits out at ‘sinking ship’ England

Former England captain Eoin Morgan has slammed the current set-up, describing it as a “sinking ship” after fielding coach Carl Hopkinson was sent out to face the media prior to the World Cup clash with the Netherlands.

England’s defence of the trophy they won in 2019 has been nothing short of woeful, and they went into today’s game having won just one of their seven games in India.

The pre-match news conference is normally attended by a senior coach or player, so Hopkinson’s appearance raised eyebrows and didn’t sit well with Morgan.

He told Sky Sports: “I was very surprised and a little bit shocked by it. When things are going wrong, you need absolute clarity and direction.

“You have to front up and in certain instances, you can look at it and say ‘are they shirking responsibility?’

“At the moment it’s a sinking ship and you need people to take responsibility. Take responsibility for your actions, that is just part and parcel of the job.

“It very much surprised me seeing Carl Hopkinson being rolled out yesterday. If it was Ben Stokes or Joe Root, a senior voice in the changing room, you would say ‘right, this is the message in the changing room, this is how it’s going to work’.

“But you very rarely would send out an assistant coach to give a strong message when the team needs it.”

Morgan last week described suggestions he was keen to take over from current white-ball coach Matthew Mott as “far-fetched”.

Bespoke lightbox canopy unveiled at beauty brand store in Paris

Two North West companies are celebrating after their colour-changing canopy of 182 LED light boxes, displayed at a flagship beauty store in Paris, was hailed a triumph.

The ‘jewel in the crown’ was developed and manufactured by Middleton-based Unibox, and Intecho, based in Knutsford, for the re-opening of Sephora’s prestigious store on the Champs-Elysees, following a multi-million Euro renovation project.

It was the culmination of an 15-month collaboration between the beauty brand and Unibox, the UK’s biggest manufacturer of aluminium and LED-based solutions for retail spaces, exhibitions and commercial interiors, and Intecho, a leading provider of  SMART building technology solutions.

Sephora had asked if the firms could make the vision of a thematic canopy a reality after seeing a bespoke Unibox design manufactured for a development in London.

While Unibox adopted and developed the concept for manufacturing, Intecho’s brief was to devise and implement a comprehensive arrangement of lighting controls, featuring its DALI DIMMING system for precise and dynamic lighting management, for both the canopy and the lighting throughout the rest of the store.

The 82m canopy is capable of multiple thematic animations, such as mesmerising black and white Sephora stripes that chime with its brand image, as well as a rainbow LGBT Pride and red, white and blue Bastille Day-themed displays among others.

New animations can be designed remotely and uploaded to the Paris store from the UK.

Stunning result

Paul Murphy, Intecho director said: “The end result is stunning. The first thing everybody did when they walked into the store was to look up at the canopy. It breathes life into the space, creating a perfect ambiance for everyone who enters.

“We were thrilled to collaborate with Unibox and Sephora, leaving an indelible mark on their flagship store. The vision for this project was to elevate the visitor experience through innovative technology solutions. This project has set a new global standard for luxury shopping.”

Unibox director Nick Wraith added: “From the initial enquiry until the store opening, it took an immense amount of ingenuity and innovation to make the idea into a working reality.

“We had to create solutions to some complex and specific requests, such as lux level and efficacy, the need to make the lightboxes RGBW, include access hatches for maintenance and take the store’s air extraction and fire suppression systems into account in the design. There was also a glass firewall we had to meet and then continue the canopy on the other side. These were all problems that we were able to solve.”

Future plans

With Sephora planning to open more stores in the UK in 2024, the Unibox sales team is now in talks with the beauty brand’s parent company to supply more bespoke lighting solutions.

The Northern businesses are now plotting a smaller scale working replica of the canopy when they exhibit at the LiGHT23 trade show in London later this month.

Astonishing Discovery: Whisky Enthusiast Purchases one of 10 Rare Boxes for a Fraction of its Worth on eBay

In a remarkable stroke of luck, a whisky enthusiast named Fraser stumbled upon a treasure on eBay—an ultra-rare Macallan 1926 60 Year Old Valerio Adami display case worth £138,600, all for the unbelievable price of under £200. Fraser, a 58-year-old aficionado of fine whisky, immediately recognised the item as the display case that once housed a bottle of Macallan 1926 60 Year Old whisky, featuring a label designed by renowned Italian artist Valerio Adami. The whisky in this legendary bottle originated from cask #263. Remarkably, the contents of the cask filled a total of 40 bottles. However, only 12 of these bottles featured labels designed by Valerio Adami, celebrated for his abstract paintings. Tragically, records indicate that at least two of these rare bottles have been lost or destroyed—one was opened and consumed many years ago, and another met its fate during a 2011 earthquake in Japan. Consequently, it’s believed that only 10 bottles bearing Adami’s label remain in existence. In 2020, a Valerio Adami version of the 1926 60 Year Old whisky sold for an astonishing £924,000 in Perth. Fraser’s journey into whisky collecting began when his wife gifted him a Macallan Private Eye, a moment that sparked his passion for this cherished spirit. He recalled, “My then dram of choice was a Macallan 10 year old. The perfect gift but one I thought far too special to break the seal of.” Over time, Fraser transitioned from collecting whisky to accumulating Macallan-related merchandise and memorabilia, from beer mats to bridge cards and even an exploration of Albanian shopping malls. He confessed, “There has been much discussion between my wife and I as to what constitutes an obsession, her words, or what is a passion. Let’s just say that I am always on the lookout for something to add to the collection.” One fateful day, Fraser decided to search for Macallan items on eBay, and that’s when he stumbled upon the exceptionally rare Macallan 1926 case. He recalled the moment: “When checking eBay one day, I could not believe my own eyes. The first image was a close up of a tiny plaque, inscribed with four numerals: 1926. I knew immediately where the plaque belonged and when I opened the set of images, there it was, attached to ‘The Million Dollar Macallan Box’. The 1926 Adami case was missing the plinth, had a hole bored in the bottom but it was undoubtedly the original home for one of the fabled 1926 Macallan bottles. The invitation to open the bidding was set at £199.” Fraser emerged victorious in the eBay auction, acquiring the priceless case for a mere £199. A decade later, when he decided to part with some of his collection, he reached out to broker Mark Littler for a valuation. To his astonishment, Mark Littler, a seasoned industry expert with over ten years of experience, appraised the case at a staggering £138,600. Mark explained, ” This is an incredibly difficult item to value. However, bottles of rare single malt whisky missing their box regularly sell for between 15-30% less than those with their original box at auction. The £138,600 figure is based on 15% of the last bottle of 1926 Valerio Adami that sold (£924,000). He continued, “I understand that the valuation of the case might raise eyebrows, and it’s important to highlight the distinct nature of rare whisky collecting. The £138,600 price tag, though an undeniably divisive price for a case, reflects the rarity and desirability of the Macallan 1926 60 year old. For the individual who possesses the corresponding Macallan bottle, missing its original case, this box is not just packaging—it’s a vital piece of the whisky’s legacy, rendering it priceless. In this unique market, such elements are key in preserving both the monetary and sentimental value of these rare treasures.” Mark Littler Ltd, established in 2016 and incorporated in 2018, has become one of the largest independent consultants and whisky brokers in the UK. They have facilitated millions of pounds worth of sales, ranging from Rolex watches to Micromosaic art and bottles of whisky to entire casks of whisky. Mark Littler raised an intriguing question about the missing bottle that belongs to Fraser’s case: “This is the box for the most expensive whisky in the world – it is not the type of bottle you would open and drink so where is the missing bottle that belongs to the case? The eBay seller that Fraser purchased the case from was located in the south coast of England – perhaps it is there? Maybe someone has the bottle by inheritance and is completely unaware of its value. My advice would be to check the labels on any Macallan – you could have a fortune sitting on your shelf.” The Macallan 1926 60 Year Old Valerio Adami Display Case is now available for purchase online, offering a unique opportunity for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Expressing his gratitude to his support network, he added, “I’m immensely thankful to those who believed in me—Margaretanne, Heather, Marie, Maryanne, Alan, Jo, Steve, and many others—for pushing me to pursue my dreams and goals.” Fran’s journey with Tiktok’s Got Talent began when she entered a competition earlier this year. She is now the first of many artists who have emerged from TGT Records to release a single. Fran expressed her passion for music, saying, “I’ve enjoyed singing since I was around three years old. I always knew it was something I wanted to pursue. It’s my passion, music is my soul! I find writing difficult, but I give it a good try! “When I entered TGT2023’s competition, hosted By Daddy Goo I never in a million years thought that I was ever good enough to win I just did it for my Mental Health as music is my therapy. I was just extremely grateful for the opportunity and must thank Goo and his team for absolutely everything as they really helped me evolve and find my voice while building confidence and belief within myself. Fran’s heartfelt creation, “Solitary Rain,” was her final task in the competition and represents a dream come true for her. “Solitary Rain” is available for pre-order now and is slated for release on December 1st this year.

Komoder expects a significant surge in sales this Black Friday, thanks to their reputation for quality products and efforts in communicating the arrival of new models.

“As for the percentage increase in sales during this period compared to a regular time of the year, it is difficult to determine, as sales can vary greatly,” commented Adrian. “They may increase by 200% or even by 300%. Addressing Recycling Concerns in the UK: What’s the Reality?

Recent research conducted by Enviro Skip Hire, a specialist in Skip Hire Central London, suggests that more than half of the UK’s population misses opportunities to recycle at home.

In a 2020 European research study, it was revealed that the UK ranked third in waste production, generating 282.4 tonnes of waste in a calendar year. Germany held the top spot, producing over 400 tonnes of waste, closely followed by France with 310.4 tonnes of waste generated.

What does the data for 2023 indicate?

  • Northern Ireland was the only region in the UK where the recycling rate did not increase.
  • The UK’s disposal of biodegradable waste in landfills increased by 0.7 million tonnes in 2020.

James Rubin, the Managing Director, commented, “New data also shows that recycling is in fact becoming a normalised behaviour across the UK. With over 85% of the population consciously recycling, it’s clear to see that the trend is moving in the right direction. The more the population recycles, the less the population will require landfill and other costly waste disposal methods. Clothing and electricals are just some examples of what recycling plastic alone can be turned into.”

What does the future of recycling hold? It is likely that governments, councils, and organisations will explore more innovative methods of managing waste. The UK may even take inspiration from the USA’s efforts and set a goal of increasing the national recycling rate by 50% by 2023.

King’s Speech: Which policies made it?

0

King Charles III has made his first King’s Speech, in which he announced the government’s key objectives for the upcoming year.

It is likely to be the last speech before the next general election and so was the last chance to announce new bills to be introduced in this parliamentary session.

The address mentioned 21 proposed laws.

His Royal Highness said: “My government’s priority is to make decisions to make the difficult but necessary long term decision to change this country for the better. My minister’s focus is in increasing economic growth and safeguarding the health and security of the British people for generations to come.

“My government will continue to take action to bring down inflation, to ease the cost of living for families and help businesses fund new jobs and investment.”

The 21 proposed laws

Media bill – To scrap a never-enacted rule forcing media companies to pay the legal bills of people who sue them, even if they win.

Offshore petroleum licensing bill – To award licences for oil and gas projects in the North Sea annually.

Pedicabs bill – A law to regulate and license the three-wheel vehicles.

Renters reform bill – To enable landlords more powers to evict antisocial tenants and an end to pet bans.

Sentencing bill – To hand down whole life orders to “horrific murderers” and more time in jail for rapists.

Terrorism bill – Martyn’s law (named after Manchester Arena bomb victim Martyn Hett) will make venues be better prepared in the event of a terrorist attack.

Tobacco and vapes bill – Legislation to phase out cigarettes being sold in England.

Trade bill – To seal a new trade deal with a range of Pacific and Asian nations.

Victims and prisoners bill – Jade’s law – a suspension of parental responsibility while any mother or father is serving time for killing the person with whom they shared that responsibility – to be introduced.

“More sticking plasters”

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, has described the King’s Speech – which was written by the government – as a “plan for more of the same.”

He told the House of Commons: “Today’s address shows just how ridiculous that posturing is because what we have before us is a plan for more of the same, more sticking plasters, more division, more party first, country second gimmicks and no repudiation of the utterly discredited idea that economic growth is something the few hand down to the many.

“In fact today we reach something of a new low because they are not even pretending to govern anymore. They have given up on any sense of service. They see our country’s problems as something to be exploited, not solved.”

Rashford back in Manchester United squad for Champions League clash

Marcus Rashford was today included in the Manchester United squad for the Champions League game against FC Copenhagen.

Rashford missed the weekend win at Fulham – Bruno Fernandes scoring a last-gasp winner – with the official reason being a leg injury.

However, the England international was also in the bad books of boss Erik ten Hag after going out clubbing in the immediate aftermath of United’s 3-0 hammering by Manchester City on October 29, a misdemeanour for which he has since apologised.

Rashford has scored one goal in 14 United appearances this season, and has struggled to impact games in the way he has done previously.

But he will be available at the Parken Stadium for the Group A clash tomorrow night as United go in search of the win that would enhance their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Ten Hag’s men currently sit third in the pool, a point behind second-placed Galatasaray.
