He told Portuguese newspaper A Bola: “It [being a leader] is natural, I don’t think about it that much.

“There are some players that like it and others that don’t. But for us, on the field, it is difficult to convey messages the way we are talking here. It’s practically impossible.

“Usually we have to use our arms more, to gesture. We are too far away from each other to be able to understand the messages we want to convey to each other.

Simona Halep has hit back at Caroline Wozniacki after the Dane suggested she should not have been awarded entry to the Miami Open following her doping ban, insisting she did not cheat.

Halep was beaten by Paula Badosa in the first round in Miami on Tuesday, having seen a four-year doping ban reduced to nine months following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS].

Despite CAS ruling that Halep unintentionally took banned substance Roxadustat due to a contaminated product, the decision to grant her a wildcard for the Miami Open was not universally welcomed.

Asked about Halep’s presence at the tournament, Wozniacki said players returning from doping bans “should work their way from the bottom”.

“I have always wanted a clean sport, fair for everybody,” the 2018 Australian Open champion said.

“This is not directly at Simona, but if someone purposely cheats, if someone has tested positive for doping, I don’t think people should be awarded wildcards afterwards.”

Those comments were put to Halep in a press conference after her 1-6 6-4 6-3 defeat to Badosa, prompting an bemused response from the two-time grand slam winner.

“Why has she said that? I didn’t do anything wrong. I didn’t cheat, I didn’t dope,” Halep said.

“It’s better if we read the ruling from CAS that it was a contaminated supplement, it was not doping and I never had anything to do with doping. I’m not a cheater.

“Thank you to the tournament for giving me the wildcard and the opportunity to play, it was great to be back and just one person being negative about me is not important.

“I have hundreds of people giving me love, so I’ll take that. To see the crowd supporting me was so nice, it gave me a lot of energy, and the level of tennis was pretty good, unexpectedly I think.”

Ferrari did not provide a timeframe for Sainz’s recovery, but on Wednesday the team included him on their official media schedule ahead of the Melbourne event.

Two men arrested following cross-border police chase

Two men have been arrested following a cross-border police chase in Oldham.

Police received a call about a home burglary in Blackley on Monday night, where three vehicles were reported stolen.

Officers successfully used ANPR to identify a black BMW 1 series which they believed was stolen. In just 12 hours, the car had been fitted with false plates and was back on the roads, and flagged between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire.

GMP’s TVIU officers lay in wait, prepared to snare the vehicle as it travelled past them on Ripponden Road near the county border. Officers engaged in a short chase reaching speeds of 100mph, as the occupants attempt to evade capture.

A stinger was deployed, which successfully deflated all four tyres. The two occupants  abandoned the car and attempted to make off on foot across the moors but were arrested after a pursuit.

Two men (22 and 19) have been arrested on suspicion of burglary, dangerous driving, possession of controlled drugs failing to stop for police.

A large quantity of cash and drugs were recovered from within the vehicle.

Both occupants are believed to be prolific burglars who have been wanted by police for a spate of burglaries across Greater Manchester.

Sergeant Paul Lockett said: “Our unit patrol the roads of Greater Manchester in marked and unmarked cars day and night, working with other teams across GMP to target those suspected of being involved in a wide range of crime with particular focus on burglary, robbery and vehicle crime.

“Across Greater Manchester, and beyond, officers proactively seek criminals and also act on intelligence from members of the public to drive down crime.

“We remain committed to doing everything in our power to crackdown on those who bring misery to our communities, helping to make Greater Manchester hostile for those intent on committing crime on our roads.”

Six years in prison for man who attempted rape

A man has been jailed for six years for attempting to rape a woman in Salford.

Sediq Ali (34), of Waldrons Moor, Birmingham, was found guilty of attempted rape at Minshull Street Crown Court, on Monday.

Police were called to reports of an incident in Salford on October 30, 2020. Ali had threatened the woman before subjecting her to an attempted rape.

Following an investigation, Ali was arrested and charged with the offence.

Now he must sign the sex offenders register and is subject to a restraining order.

Detective constable Warren Robinson said: “Ali subjected a woman to a degrading, humiliating experience and I am glad that he is behind bars where he belongs.
