Senior appointments revealed at Manchester’s dual-branded Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites

Experienced hoteliers Andrea Baron and Samantha Byrne have joined the first dual-branded hotel under one roof in the north of England.

Boasting 328-rooms the dual-branded Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites – known as a ‘double pack’ concept – will open to the public early next year.

Andrea has become Sales Manager of the first Staybridge Suites to open in Manchester – after joining from The Lowry Hotel.

And Samantha has landed the Crowne Plaza Sales Manager role after leaving the Holiday Inn near Piccadilly train station.

The 19-storey building sits on Manchester’s bustling Oxford Road Corridor – with Crowne Plaza guests set to occupy the first 11-storeys and longer term Staybridge customers the upper eight floors.

Andrew Fletcher, General Manager of the dual-branded hotel, described Andrea and Samantha as crucial hires.

“Samantha was heavily involved in the opening of Holiday Inn and has worked at The Malmaison, Hilton Manchester Deansgate and the National Football Museum, while Andrea boasts experience in serviced apartments too, having been part of the SACO Piccadilly ApartHotel team,” said Andrew.

“We feel they are the perfect fit for each brand and are delighted that they have come on board during what is a truly exciting period as we continue to near our opening date.”

The dual-branded double pack concept isn’t something that has been offered to people staying in Manchester before.

While the Crowne Plaza will contain 212-rooms, a 120-cover upscale restaurant, seven meeting rooms catering for over 200 delegates and a gym. Staybridge will have 116-rooms directly above it and offer a warm, social and home-like environment through a mix of studio and one-bedroom suites.

The dual-branded hotel is located on The Oxford Road Corridor, an innovation district running south from Manchester city centre that is home to 70,000 students and a workforce of 60,000 people.

It sits opposite The Royal Northern College of Music hotel and forms part of the University of Manchester’s Campus Masterplan, which includes the wider redevelopment of Alliance Manchester Business School.

Both brands are part of the IHG portfolio.

Staybridge Suites Sales Manager Andrea said: “The double pack concept is truly unique to Manchester and I’m already enjoying being part of a growing team.

“I have worked in sales for 16 years, have both hotel and extended stay experience which is quite unusual and have previously worked with my now Director of Sales and Marketing Melanie Thompson.”

She added: “There is so much opportunity to do new business on The Oxford Road Corridor and I believe we can carve a niche for ourselves and capitalise on the growth of the city and the Corridor.”

Samantha, Sales Manager Crowne Plaza, said: “Having opened the Holiday Inn in Manchester city centre not too long ago, another brand that is part of the IHG portfolio, I know just how brilliant it is to be heavily involved at this stage of the process.

“Crowne Plaza is my primary focus, but I’m also excited to work alongside Andrea and learn about the extended stay offering, market and industry.

“The next few months are going to be hard work but also enjoyable, ahead of opening early next year.”

COMPLACENCY THE KILLER FACTOR IN WORKING AT HEIGHT, WARNS GTR. MANCHESTER SPECIALIST

Lack of awareness and complacency are the main causes of serious accidents and fatalities for employees working at height, a Greater Manchester training specialist has warned.

Bolton-based Develop Training Limited (DTL) made the comments after supermarket Iceland was fined £2.5 million for an incident when a contractor fell to his death.

The victim was replacing air conditioning filters in the warehouse of a Rotherham store when he plunged three metres from a platform through a suspended ceiling. Investigators found there were no barriers, restricted working space and several tripping hazards including cabling, and that there had been no risk assessment.

Steve Braund, marketing manager at DTL, said: “This is the latest in an all-too-frequent series of cases where people have been killed or injured because of inadequate precautions.”

DTL has identified lack of awareness and complacency as major contributing factors in many of the cases.

“Common themes crop up time and time again, fragile roofs and skylights in particular, and employers using contractors without effectively checking the contractor will themselves use safe systems of work,” said Mr Braund. “Almost every week there is a report of a death or serious injury of people working at height. Poor assessment of risk, and inadequate control measures, continue to lead to hundreds of shattered lives.”

DTL has produced a handy pocket guide to raise awareness of the factors managers, employees and contractors should consider before commencing working at height.

Brownlee Brothers visit Soreen’s bakery

Olympic triathletes, the Brownlee Brothers, take a tour of Soreen’s Manchester-based bakery to learn more about the secret ingredient that makes malt loaves so squidgy.

The brothers are firm fans of Soreen’s squidgy energy, and the product’s role in fuelling exercise and active adventure by providing healthier, tasty snacks for people on the move.

Over the last few years, Soreen has supported the Brownlee Brothers’ Foundation, which aims to get children active in local communities, by providing delicious products to their children’s triathlon events.

Soreen has now launched Malt Loaf Bars to meet the demand for high energy snacks for adults on the move. At 124 kcals per bar, the malt loaf bar is a great source of tasty energy and low in fat, perfect for training and endurance sports. Available in individually wrapped bars, the new malt loaf bar is a convenient, healthier alternative to refuel without relying on sugary chocolate bars.

Alistair Brownlee explained: “What you eat whilst training is really important and eating the right things isn’t rocket science. It is important to know what to eat and when. Soreen has high carbohydrates and low simple sugars which makes it the perfect snack for a burst of energy and lasts throughout the time you are training.”

Using Soreen’s beloved original malt loaf recipe, the new format makes it available as a ‘snack bar’ to enjoy on the go. The new Malt Loaf Bar is  moist and squidgy just as it is – no need for butter, and can be found in ASDA, Co-op , Sainsbury’s, WHSmith and Booths stores across the UK at the RRP of 75p.

New centre set to help prevent homelessness

Plans have been announced to transform an empty former residential care home in Manchester into a 38-bed homelessness prevention centre.

Manchester City Council will shortly submit a planning application for the Longford Centre in Chorlton which would provide emergency temporary accommodation to prevent people becoming homeless and help them move forwards in their lives.

The centre, subject to approval, will be one of around 50 different housing and accommodation offers for homeless people in Manchester, with each providing support to different groups of homeless people and meeting different needs.

Subject to planning approval, the centre will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and created to help single people and childless couples who are new to homelessness by providing a safe and welcoming environment in which they can receive intensive support.

Services at the centre are being co-designed by the Council with voluntary sector and public sector organisations who work with homeless people and with people who have experienced homelessness themselves.

The centre will provide accommodation (including food) and support services under one roof plus planned activities to help people who have recently become homeless to rebuild their confidence and move on into independent accommodation, and employment, training or other opportunities.

There are many reasons why people become homeless and this support will be flexible and tailored to the individual. For some it might be mediation with their family to help get them back home. For others it might be help sorting out health or debt problems.

Other organisations will be asked to help at the centre to provide appropriate activities for residents during the day, for example gardening, cooking or art.

The centre will be available for people who are new to homelessness and have low to medium – rather than the highest – support needs. It is intended to supplement the range of existing accommodation and support services and people who need it will be referred to the centre by Council homelessness services and other organisations working with homeless people.

Councillor Bernard Priest, deputy leader of Manchester City Council, said: “This new centre will be just one part of Manchester’s ongoing response to the challenge of homelessness but it is another important ingredient and it’s a key component of the Greater Manchester framework being championed by Mayor Andy Burnham.

“By bringing a range of services together under one roof and giving people a safe and welcoming environment in which to receive support and move forward in their lives, we aim to help prevent people ending up on the streets.

“This is not a substitute for helping rough sleepers and other homeless people, which we and our partner organisations will continue to do, but is intended to provide early help to those on the very edge of homelessness. It’s something we’re keen to have in place for when colder weather sets in which is why we are about to bring forward a planning application.

“There will also be opportunities for local people, many of whom we know are concerned about the issue of homelessness, to volunteer if they would like to do something practical to support and work with homeless people themselves.”

Stephanie Moore of Chorlton-based Reach Out To The Community, which works with homeless people in South Manchester, said: “If somebody is at risk of becoming homeless their problems are only going to get worse unless they can be nipped in the bud. Prevention is an important part of dealing with this difficult issue and stopping people ending up on a downward spiral. We are totally behind this centre.”

A consultation on the proposals has been opened with Chorlton residents. One drop-in session has already taken place and people in the area are also invited to attend another between 6pm and 8pm on Thursday 5 October at The Longford Centre to give their views and find out more about how the centre will be managed. There will be further opportunities for Chorlton residents to input as part of the planning process once the application has been submitted.
