Altrincham man named South’s Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer

A young civil engineer originally from Altrincham has received a top industry award in recognition of his outstanding success in the early stages of his career.

Jack Raftery, who works for VolkerFitzpatrick, one of the UK’s leading engineering and construction companies, based in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, received the Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer award at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (Southern) training awards in London. He was among four young people recognised forexceptional performance and dedication.

Jack won the award for his achievements as a trainee site engineer, working on projects such as the £74m Doncaster Carr Train Care depot scheme in Doncaster and the £40m Meridian Water Station project in North London. He was also recognised for his commitment in other areas, including volunteering for a major community construction project in Costa Rica, mentoring other graduates and undergraduate trainee engineers in VolkerFitzpatrick and promoting the industry to other young people and in prisons as a CITB Ambassador.

David Allen, CECA (Southern) Executive Director, said that the success of Jack and the other winners highlighted the importance of encouraging more young people into civil engineering, because their drive and innovation will help to unlock some of the challenges faced by the industry.

Said David: “It is inspirational to see our next generation of civil engineers making such a difference, even in the early stages of their careers.

“Jack has made a fantastic start to his working life and I hope his success will encourage others of his generation to find out more about the wide range of professional and vocational careers on offer. We are working hard to welcome more men and women from diverse backgrounds and other industries into our profession – it’s an exciting and rewarding sector with lots of opportunities for progression.”
