Manchester United’s January transfer targets: Four reinforcements to revitalise their struggling season

As Manchester United navigates through a season marred by inconsistency and underwhelming performances, the January transfer window represents a crucial opportunity for manager Erik ten Hag to reinforce his squad.

The Red Devils have experienced setbacks on multiple fronts, exiting the Champions League in the group stage and bowing out of the League Cup in the round of 16.

With a current seventh-place standing in the English top flight, drastic measures are needed if Man United are to become a side favourable in the second half of the season with those seeking a bet on Premier League in 2023/24.

Here, we explore four potential signings that could inject vitality into the Manchester United squad.

Jean-Clair Todibo

Amid defensive frailties that have plagued Manchester United, the pursuit of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo seems a logical step.

The French international has been on the club’s radar since the summer, and his commanding presence in the centre-back position could provide the much-needed solidity at the back.

While Todibo might command a fee of around £40 million, Manchester United faces competition from Tottenham and Newcastle for his signature.

Securing Todibo’s services could be a transformative move for a team that has struggled to maintain defensive consistency.

Lois Openda

Despite the hefty summer investment in Rasmus Hojlund, Manchester United’s attacking prowess has been underwhelming.

Lois Openda, the RB Leipzig forward, presents a potential solution to bolster the frontline.

The 23-year-old Belgian has showcased goal-scoring prowess in the Bundesliga, with 11 goals in 16 appearances.

Given United’s struggles in the final third, Openda could provide the spark needed to reignite the attack.

While his price tag is expected to exceed £70 million, the investment could be worthwhile if he proves to be the missing piece in the offensive puzzle.

Raphinha

Barcelona’s Raphinha, formerly of Leeds United, emerges as a tantalising option to address Manchester United’s issues on the wings.

Signed for around £55 million in 2022, the Brazilian winger has faced challenges adapting to La Liga.

With Barcelona reportedly open to offers in January, Raphinha’s previous Premier League experience and his dynamic style of play could inject much-needed flair into the Red Devils’ attack.

United may capitalise on the situation, bringing in the 27-year-old to add a fresh dimension to their offensive strategy.

Guido Rodriguez

Amidst underwhelming performances from summer signing Mason Mount and loanee Sofyan Amrabat, coupled with the potential departure of Casemiro, Manchester United could revisit their interest in Guido Rodriguez.

The 29-year-old helped Argentine win the 2022 World Cup and has garnered acclaim as one of La Liga’s finest midfielders at Real Betis.

With Rodriguez’s contract expiring in the summer, United could negotiate a cut-price deal in January — providing a much-needed boost to the midfield and potentially addressing the defensive void left by Casemiro and Amrabat.

If Manchester United can come out of the busy festive period, that includes a trip Nottingham Forest — one of the favourites in the Premier League relegation odds — relatively unscathed, and Ten Hag can bring in some fresh faces in January, then there is perhaps still hope they can turn their season around.
