Rochdale fly-tipper fined after being caught on camera

A Rochdale man has been fined after a security camera recorded him and two others dumping household waste from the back of a van.

Zeeshan Ali, 23, of Ashley Close, appeared at Manchester & Salford Magistrates’ Court on November 17, where he pleaded guilty to depositing waste illegally.

Mr Ali admitted his involvement at an interview with the council but refused to identify the other two individuals who participated in the fly-tipping.

The recording played in court showed Mr Ali driving his vehicle to Riverside Drive, Rochdale, in March, before multiple bags of waste were taken from it and discarded.

He was ordered to pay a total of £1,365.20 in fines, costs, and a victim surcharge.

Councillor Liam O’Rourke said: “Incidents like this drive me and most of our law-abiding residents up the wall and dumping waste wherever you feel is not acceptable. We will continue to enforce fines and penalties on those who do not take the duty of care when disposing of waste and thank those who report incidents like this to us.

“Waste must be disposed of responsibly either at the local recycling centre, through a licensed carrier, or book a free bulky waste collection if you have large items, there’s just no excuse.”

The council offers two free bulky waste collections of three items per household per year. Any additional items are charged at just £2.50 each.
