Frankie Dettori abandons retirement plans

Three-time champion jockey Frankie Dettori has reversed his decision to retire at the end of this season, saying, “I’ve still got the fire inside me”.

The Italian-born jockey has ridden over 3,300 winners in a career in Britain spanning over 37 years. After announcing in December 2022 that this season would be his last, the 52-year-old has had a great season and opted to continue his career in the United States.

He told BBC Breakfast: “I’ve still got the fire inside me that I want to do it a little bit more.

“I don’t feel ready to let go yet. I’m going to spend some time in the USA and take it from there.”

This season, Dettori has won the 2,000 Guineas, the Oaks and the Ebor, all contributing to a rethink and reversal of his initial decision.

He still plans to say his farewells to British racing at the British Champions Day at Ascot in October.

Dettori has not confirmed how long he expects to continue out in the States.

“I could be there three months or three years, I don’t know,” he added.

“It was a long, hard decision for myself and my wife. It’s a big decision to move to another country.”
