Demand for tribute bands jumps 140% as concert costs push fans towards cheaper live music

The number of enquiries for tribute performers has more than doubled in 12 months as audiences seek affordable alternatives to expensive stadium and arena concerts.

Fans looking for a more affordable live music experience are increasingly turning to tribute acts, with enquiries to Champions Music and Entertainment rising by 140 per cent over the past year.

The UK-leading tribute acts and music artists agency received 1,200 enquiries for tribute performers in the last 12 months, compared with 500 during the previous year.

Taylor Swift impersonators and tribute acts proved the most popular choice, followed by Oasis and One Direction.

The remainder of the top ten most requested acts were Bruno Mars, Coldplay, Robbie Williams, Dolly Parton, Amy Winehouse, Elton John and ABBA.

Joe Burton, Senior Music and Entertainment Agent at Champions Music and Entertainment, said: “People haven’t fallen out of love with live music. They’re just looking for a way to enjoy it that doesn’t break the bank.

“At the same time, tribute acts are better than ever. The best performers today are seriously talented musicians who invest heavily in sound, costume and staging, and audiences know they’re getting a brilliant night out. For a fraction of the price, you get the hits, the atmosphere and the singalong.

“That’s why we’re seeing demand sky rocket from fans, venues and businesses alike, and we don’t expect it to slow down.”

The growing popularity of tribute performances extends beyond individual music fans, with businesses and event organisers also booking acts for corporate celebrations, awards ceremonies, festivals and private functions. For organisers, they offer an opportunity to provide a headline-style musical experience without the cost of booking major recording artists.

The increase in enquiries comes as new research reveals that approximately one in five UK adults has attended a tribute performance in the past 12 months.

Research by the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) also found that almost a third of respondents expect to attend more tribute events over the next year, with affordable ticket prices identified as the main attraction. More than two-thirds of this group said that watching major artists perform live had become too expensive.

Music venues are also responding to the changing appetite for live entertainment. Propaganda Venues, the operator behind XOYO and Barfly in London, Tramshed in Cardiff and The Warehouse in Leeds, is increasing its programme of tribute performances as demand grows. Tickets for these events generally cost between £20 and £30.

The trend comes against a challenging backdrop for the wider night-time economy. Figures from the NTIA and NielsenIQ show that almost 29 per cent of Britain’s late-night economy has disappeared since March 2020, while the number of nightclubs has fallen by more than a third.

Venue operators say tribute nights are helping to attract customers, with audiences also tending to spend more money at the bar.
