Birthday celebrations ahead as Manchester Central Library celebrates 90 years

Summer festivities are hotting up at Manchester Central Library as it celebrates its 90th birthday on July 17, 2024.
A special celebratory birthday event taking place that day is hoping to have 90-year-old Mancunians as guests of honour.

Library staff are asking for help in finding Mancunians born in the city, 90 years ago or earlier, or who are also celebrating their 90th birthdays in July and are able to attend this unique event, to get in touch with the library. Staff will then send a special invite to attend this anniversary event.

This milestone birthday is being celebrated with a series of fun-filled events, taking place throughout the summer season and beyond.

As well as the one-off birthday celebration, the library has already seen huge numbers of people getting involved in events as part of the 90 celebrations and anticipate many more in forthcoming events this summer season.

The celebrations launched in May with the brilliant Blue Peter Book Club Live event in Central Library which saw hundreds of families in attendance. And continues with the Blue Peter badge trail inviting families to take part in a badge hunt across the city for a special grand prize and to spread the joy of reading among children.

Councillor John Hacking said: “Manchester Central Library is now one of the most visited public libraries in the country and is loved by residents and visitors alike hosting a huge range of diverse and exciting events.

“And this summer is no different as we celebrate 90 wonderful years. We could not miss the opportunity to invite residents who are celebrating their 90th birthdays to help share this very special occasion. I would urge anyone with relatives who may be able to attend to please get in contact with the library.”
