Why is vegetable Vodka so ap-pealing? We speak to its creator

There’s something very ap-pealing getting into the Christmas spirit…

The founder of Pod Pea Vodka – Manchester’s Becky Davies – has created the drink from 100% British peas, only grown in season AND the water, labels, glass (and even the sand to make the glass) are all UK-sourced.

In-keeping with the importance of locality, Pod’s peas are fermented, distilled and bottled all on the same site in Manchester, as the brand aims to minimise its environmental footprint while maximising taste.

Before founding Pod Pea Vodka, Becky had a background in hospitality and drinks, working as a bartender at Trio, Arc Inspirations, with a stint at Harvey Nics.

She said: “I opened Sandinista Manchester, then The Liars Club finishing my bartending career at MOJO. In 2013, I joined Mangrove Global and became a Sales Director by 2018.  During my time at Mangrove, I worked with a great portfolio of premium spirits and liqueurs which ignited a huge passion for the drinks industry.

“I founded Ten Locks in 2020, a spirits importer and distributor focusing on building premium, authentic spirit brands striving for positive change. Pod represents what our portfolio at Ten Locks aims to be and it has been hugely exciting!”

Why peas?

Bottle Peas Zoom Becky said: “Peas are amazing ‘nitrogen fixers’, which rejuvenate the soil, helping future crops thrive. Somerleyton Farm, where Pod’s peas are lovingly grown, take pride in its regenerative agriculture practices supplying the UK with ‘Planet Saving Food’.

“We also chose the humble pea for its ap-pealing flavour characteristics, its sustainable prowess and the fact that peas are quintessentially British, growing plentifully right here in the UK.”

Pod researched multiple crops, mainly legumes due to their nitrogen fixing qualities. However, Becky kept circling around the pea because they taste great. Her initial idea was to capture the flavours of a sugar snap pea – sweet, fresh, vegetal, and delicious.

Eat Well

Not only does Pod Pea Vodka taste fantastic, it’s also helping those in need this festive season.

Pod Pea Vodka values the three Ps; People, Purpose, Planet and for Christmas it is aiming to support a charity that it is passionate. Manchester charity, Eat Well, supports people sidelined by poverty across Greater Manchester, providing 1,000 meals every week.

Where to buy

Pod has plans in the pipeline to develop some new SKUs. So watch this space!

Pod is available to buy from Amazon, Master of Malt, Selfridges, Booths Food and more, with an RRP of £40 for a 70cl bottle.

The new spirit is also served at a number of bars and restaurants including Hawksmooor, Alchemist, The Ivy Manchester, Wolf at the Door and Tariff & Dale amongst others.

The bars have come up with some really innovative cocktails using Pod, for example Hawksmoor are serving one of Pod’s signature cocktails Peas & Q’s with Pod Pea Vodka with pear, elderflower, mint and soda water as an elegant spritz.
