UK Space Agency Accelerator Announces Opening of LEO and GEO Accelerator Program Applications

The UK Space Agency Accelerator, in partnership with Entrepreneurial Spark and Exotopic, is excited to announce the launch of its prestigious LEO and GEO accelerator programs, welcoming applications from aspiring space startups. Building upon the successes of previous cohorts, these programs aim to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship within the space sector, offering exceptional support and resources to the next generation of space industry pioneers.

The highly anticipated LEO and GEO accelerator programs are set to be the most dynamic and diverse yet. The LEO program is tailored for entrepreneurs with existing business traction or those utilising space technology. It provides entrepreneurs with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the space industry and navigate their businesses through transformative changes. The GEO program, on the other hand, supports ambitious entrepreneurs on their journey to becoming resilient leaders and encourages them to focus on areas that will have a high impact on their businesses. It is designed for entrepreneurs with space sector businesses that have either secured £500,000+ in funding or generated £500,000 in annualised revenue.

Craig Brown, Director of Investment at UK Space Agency, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The UK’s space sector is flourishing, and the LEO and GEO programmes offer an exceptional opportunity for our most innovative space businesses and entrepreneurs, from all walks of life, a chance to fulfil their potential. It is vital that we continue to support the most ambitious talent creating space-based solutions to global problems, who also catalyse investment into the sector, and work to keep the UK at the forefront of this thriving industry. We look forward to following the progress of these programmes come to life.”

The UK Space Agency Accelerator is offering 20 fully funded positions for the LEO program and 5 for the GEO program. Carefully selected participants are expected to disrupt the industry and leave a lasting impact. Previous LEO and GEO program graduates include notable companies such as D-Orbit, Quantum-Dice, and Lumi Space. The accelerator is now inviting the next cohort of visionary space entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds to join its mission of promoting innovation, economic growth, and diversity in the UK space sector.

In a concerted effort to increase diversity within the space sector, the UK Space Agency Accelerator aims to attract more female entrepreneurs to the program. Although the space sector has made progress in attracting women, as highlighted in the 2020 Space Census conducted by Space Skills Alliance, there is still room for growth in the number of female entrepreneurs in the sector. The accelerator is open not only to applicants from the space sector but also to entrepreneurs from adjacent industries such as marketing, finance, design, IT, or architecture who are interested in transitioning into the space industry. As the space sector continues to grow, with 80% of its income derived from commercial activities, opportunities abound for entrepreneurs to bridge the diversity gap in the industry.

Portia Bircher, Local Growth Manager at the UK Space Agency Accelerator, emphasized the program’s inclusive approach: “The UK Space Agency Accelerator is all about supporting great people to build great businesses and, as part of our mission to grow the UK space sector, we are keen to engage with start-ups from diverse backgrounds, including those developed by female entrepreneurs. There has been a lot of good work done in recent years to attract more women into the space sector, but we still receive fewer applications from female founders. We are committed to taking an inclusive approach by reaching out to entrepreneurs with space-applicable technologies across all sorts of business areas, to explore the space sector as a potential market.”

With a robust support network designed to accelerate entrepreneurial journeys, program participants will benefit from guidance from seasoned industry experts through the accelerator’s extensive partner network, including Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Alden Legal, Know. Space, and Satellite Finance Network. What sets these programs apart is their focus on nurturing entrepreneurial mindsets and fostering growth-oriented attitudes, essential elements for achieving business success. The programs also emphasise personal development, equipping entrepreneurs with versatile skills to become resilient business leaders and instilling confidence and unwavering determination to succeed in the space industry.

Applications for the accelerator programs are now open, and the UK Space Agency Accelerator welcomes entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds to apply.
