Chorley Container company dedicates 2023 to raising £30k for cancer research

A waste container refurbishment company based in Chorley has committed to raising £30,000 for cancer research next year, in support of a staff member who has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

Fairport Containers Ltd, which is a leading provider of refurbishment, remodelling, resale and hire solutions for steel waste containers, is planning a series of fundraising events.

The company has decided to support Assistant Manager Mel throughout his journey by raising funds for regional charity North West Cancer Research, choosing a fundraising target that coincides with its 30-year anniversary which takes place in 2023.

Staff across the company will take part in a number of gruelling challenges including a three peaks challenge, skydive, Liverpool to Leeds bike ride and more throughout the year. Additionally, Fairport will be hosting a Charity Gala Dinner & Auction Evening in May to be held at Cunliffe Hall, Chorley.

Fairport have already received support and donations from friends, family, suppliers and customers. Recently a North West based metal recycler Maxilead have generously donated £1,000 to the cause.

59-year-old Mel, who is from Adlington, was diagnosed with cancer around Christmas 2021 and is receiving treatment at Blackpool Hospital. Following a recent transplant procedure and stay in hospital, Mel is now back at work following his positive results and recovery.

After 25 years of service at Fairport Containers, Mel has adapted his role to be office based with lighter duties throughout his illness. The company has supported him through his diagnosis and treatment, helping to organise events and arrange funding whilst helping him adjust to a new routine.

Steve Collinson, Managing Director at Fairport Group Ltd said: “Mel is an extremely valued member of our team and clubbing together to raise vital funds for such an important cause that will benefit people in our region is the least we can do to support him. We would like to thank everyone so far for their support. We’re excited to get out there and tackle our challenges.”

Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research added: “We’re so grateful for Fairport Container’s fundraising efforts to support our vital work and wish Mel and the team all the very best for their challenges in the coming year.”

“All the funds raised will support life-saving research across the region to help achieve a cancer-free future for the North West.”

North West Cancer Research is an independent charity dedicated to putting the region’s cancer needs first by funding life-saving research and education to tackle the cause, improve the care and find the cure for cancer.
