Adidas and B&M Waste collaborate for World Earth Day

0

As part of their commitment to keeping Manchester clean and their World Earth Day commitment, B&M Waste and a team of volunteers from Adidas and volunteer group, the Sale Wombles took part in a litter pick along the towpath of Bridgewater Canal on Trafford Park in Manchester.

This area of outstanding beauty is used by the public, which when littered with rubbish takes away from the natural beauty of the area, while also damaging the wildlife living there.

The wonderful team of volunteers gave up a few hours of their working day to clear bottles, crisp packets, cans, plastic bags and other rubbish from the area into bin bags.

The waste was then taken to B&M’s Trafford Park Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) processing facility. Materials such as cardboard, wood and metals are then recycled, while all non-recyclable waste is compacted into bales, then wrapped and transported to a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) site.

The thermal energy is then recovered to produce electricity and steam is generated for a local district heating system. This ensures as much waste as possible is diverted from landfill, and is therefore less damaging to the environment.

This has improved the area, and the journeys for all who use it making the area ssafer and more appealing.

Richard Hall, Maintenance Specialist at Adidas said: “What a great morning we had! Before and after photos show what we achieved.  Thanks to everyone that took part, it’s really made a visible difference!”

Graham Curtis, Director at B&M Waste Services commented “It is great to work with customers to tidy up the local public environment. Adidas and the Sale Wombles are a great team of people and it is a great project for us to be a part of. With the law now imposing a fine of up to £150 when caught littering, we hope the area will remain as clean and clear as it now is today.”

Surveyors get on their bikes for epic highland challenge

0

Two colleagues from property consultancy, Cushman & Wakefield’s Manchester office are set to undertake a gruelling bike ride which will see them cycle around the Scottish Highlands non-stop.

Matthew Wackett and Rob Prescott, both based in Manchester, are hoping to raise £10,000 for The Seashell Trust, a Manchester-based charity which supports children and young adults with complex and severe learning disabilities.

The ride will start on 14 July and follows the North Coast 500 route, a 518-mile route which skirts around the rugged coastline of the Scottish Highlands. It is expected that Matthew and Rob will be riding for around 35 – 40 hours in total with only minimal stops to re-supply food and water.

They will begin their challenge at Inverness Castle and will take in the villages and towns of Ullapool, Durness, John O’Groats and Dornoch, following a route that adventure cyclist Mark Beaumont and ex-professional cyclist James McCullum have both taken to complete the challenge.

Matthew Wackett said: “As daunting and physically and mentally demanding as this challenge is likely to be, the prospect of seeing those children at The Seashell Trust benefit from the money raised will make it all worthwhile.”

Rob Prescott added: “I’ve never contemplated doing anything like this before and I’m still trying to get my head around the distance, but that’s part of the attraction of this challenge!”

Apartments and retail plan to transform redundant Chorlton office building

0

North West builder Construction Partnership UK (CPUK) has negotiated a £2.3 million contract to transform redundant council offices in Chorlton, near Manchester.

Manchester developer, Newpark Group & Retail Property Investments are bringing the 1960s building at 102 Manchester Road back to life with a mixed use scheme that will enhance the neighbourhood.

CPUK has begun work on site to create three new retail units at street level with 22 one and two bedroom apartments on the upper floors.

Steve Burke, managing director of CPUK, said: “The existing building is on the main road and is bounded on both sides by busy retail businesses and a car park.

“Due to this and the restrictive nature of the site, close liaison with the surrounding businesses is essential.

“The project is to form new retail units on the ground floor, including a new fully glazed curtain walled shop front to Manchester Road, with café seating behind a glazed balustrade to the front apron.

“The existing roof will be removed and we are building an additional new fourth storey which will be light weight construction and clad externally with zinc.

“The existing building will be fully refurbished to provide apartments, all existing façades will be enhanced including the replacement of all windows. The apartments will be serviced by a newly refurbished service core which includes a new lift accessing all upper floors.

“The building has secure parking and services to the ground floor retail units.”

Newpark Group & Retail Property Investments bought the former council office building in August 2016 and, with work now begun on site, expects the project to complete by the end of 2018.

Manchester Road in Chorlton is a bustling street with a range of retail businesses including Barbakan Delicatessen and Bakery and the Unicorn Grocery Workers’ Co-operative.

CPUK is currently on site with a £2.98 million apartment scheme in one of the last remaining vacant plots in Chapel Street, Salford, building the Albert Vaults, an eight storey building with 25 apartments and a commercial unit on the site of the former Albert Vaults pub, close to Salford Central Station and just a short walk into Manchester city centre.

CPUK Group is one of the North West’s leading independent building and civil engineering companies with an annual turnover of £50 million.

Founded in March 2000, the business operates from purpose-built headquarters at White Moss Business Park in Skelmersdale.

It enjoys an exceptional reputation in the fields of Traditional and Design and Build construction schemes with more than 80% of contracts undertaken on a repeat business basis with blue chip clients.

CPUK Group also includes a Civils & Remediation division, which means the company is now offering a full in-house construction and development service to clients – from demolition and site remediation to building work – all based at CPUK’s headquarters in Skelmersdale.

CPUK Group has achieved Investors in People Status and is Constructionline and CHAS accredited for major schemes in excess of £5 million.

New early-warning device to detect infection in dialysis patients completes successful clinical pilot in Manchester

0

An innovative solution designed to identify infection in dialysis patients has completed a successful pilot clinical investigation following a funding award from Health Innovation Manchester.

Manchester-based medical device company Microbiosensor, secured £50,000 from the Energise Innovation Fund in 2016 to pilot their PD Safe device in Manchester.

The PD Safe is aimed at those on peritoneal dialysis therapy (PD) and acts as an early warning system for peritonitis, an infection that can prove fatal if left untreated.

PD is the lowest cost and least lifestyle compromising form of renal dialysis available in the UK, however less than 10 per cent of patients on renal replacement therapy are on PD, with an average therapy duration of only five years.

Recurrent infections are a major cause of technique failure of PD and current best practice relies on patient’s self-reporting possible symptoms of infection — abdominal pain, fever and visually checking a clear plastic waste bag for signs of cloudiness in their PD waste.

However, as the symptoms are not specific and not detectable until an infection has become well-established, patients can find making a judgement stressful and difficult – leading to a delay in time to diagnosis and treatment.

The PD Safe aims to overcome this issue by plugging into existing PD waste fluid tubing and flagging an emerging infection at a pre-symptomatic stage via a simple colour change in a readout window.

The device uses a small dialysis waste sample from the patient to fill a series of reaction chambers containing chemicals which can detect bacteria and provide a rapid, clear colour change to alert the user to the infection.

Following the funding award, Microbiosensor have completed a successful pilot clinical investigation of the PD Safe device at the Manchester Royal Infirmary renal centre, working with Consultant Nephrologist Dr Anand Vardhan at the PD clinic.

The device successfully acted as an early warning system for infection, detecting bacteria within samples from patients, including one who was admitted to A&E within a few days as they went on to develop peritonitis.

Ben Bridgewater, CEO of Health Innovation Manchester, said: “The PD-Safe device is an excellent example of the solutions Health Innovation Manchester aims to support in their journey to market.

“The successful pilot clinical investigation in Greater Manchester marks a great leap forward in the project which has the potential to meet the needs of local people and patients.

“It is vital that products like the PD-Safe are given support in order to transform health and social care and Health Innovation Manchester is uniquely placed to champion these innovations and connect researches, academics, business and the NHS in Greater Manchester.”

Gordon Barker, CEO of Microbiosensor, said: “The Energise funding from Health Innovation Manchester helped Microbiosensor improve its understanding of clinical trial management at a major NHS Trust and strengthen the design of a subsequent larger study at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

“It has made a significant contribution to Microbiosensor efforts to bring its novel medical device technology to market.”

Microbiosensor has also secured a £1.4million Series-A co-investment from the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (managed by Maven Capital Partners) and the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Fund (managed by Catapult Ventures) to support the company through it final product development stages.
