Reuters rates University of Manchester for the high commercial impact of its patents

A list recently produced by Reuters ranks The University of Manchester as the seventh most innovative in Europe – jumping nine places from the 2017 report – and third in the UK.

The Reuters Top 100 Most Innovative Universities ranking is based on the number of academic papers, patents filed and citations by other academics and industry which introduces a quality rather than a volume measure.

The University’s world-class research base has an excellent track record of innovation spanning over 30 years. All of the ideas which are generated by the University’s researchers have the potential to save lives, improve health, increase efficiencies in industry and the environment, and otherwise enhance society and make positive contributions to our economy.

Clive Rowland, CEO of UMI3 Ltd, The University’s agent for IP commercialisation, comments: “The University continues to promote its long-standing commitment to improving society through innovation, whether such positive impacts are achieved by our social enterprises or for commercial gain through our spin-out company and technology licensing work.

“We recognise that to be an innovative organisation we need to look for quality as well as volume with our patenting –  our patents need to be both thorough and defensible.

“It’s pleasing to see that our results focussed approach and continuous improvement in our way of working, that we introduced some time ago, is having an effect as shown by our upward movement in this index.

“The difference between us and those towards the top of the table, in respect of the impact measure, is narrowing too.”

Since 2004, the University’s IP enterprises have generated over £115 million to the University through the sale of shares in spin-outs, licensing income and through IP grants and contracts activity. Furthermore, over £430m has been invested by 3rd party venture funders in the University’s spin-outs, a number of which have received national and regional enterprise awards.

Manchester is synonymous with Graphene following its isolation in 2010 by Nobel Prize winners Professors Geim and Novoselov. The University has one of the most extensive portfolios of IP rights relating to graphene and 2D materials with over 300 scientists engaged in 2D materials research here in.Graphene City ®.

IP encompasses technologies in areas including: the production of 2D materials, 2D inks, desalination and nano-filtration membranes, barrier coatings, polymer composites, thermoelectric composites, sensors, touch screen interfaces, printable electronics and wearable technologies to name a few.

Earlier this month the University with spin-out Nanoco Group PLC, which develops and manufactures quantum dots and nano-materials, launched Nanoco 2D Materials Ltd to develop a new generation of nano-materials. Potential commercial applications for these materials span across a wide range of sectors including novel catalysts, photo-detectors, photovoltaics, inverters and light emitting devices.

Spin-out and AIM listed SkinBioTherapeutics, a skin health specialist, raised £4.5m when it listed on the London stock market last year. The company recently announced that its cream formulation has passed effectiveness studies in models of skin and will now undergo further testing for stability.

Earlier this year, another spin-out MicroBioSensor – which is behind a medical device designed to detect life threatening infections – received a £1.4m investment boost.and has just successfully completed its first clinical trial.

Manchester Airport secures flights to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines improving connectivity for 400,000 people

0

Manchester Airport has secured a landmark route into the heart of Africa, underlining its pivotal role in connecting the North to the world’s most important markets.

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed it will operate a four-times-a-week service to Addis Ababa, the East African nation’s capital.

The route will unlock connections to more than 58 countries across the African continent.

Ethiopian, which flies to more destinations in Africa than any other carrier, will operate the ultramodern B-787 on the route with business and economy classes.

It will serve as a key trade route for Northern businesses, opening up fresh export opportunities and delivering cost and journey time savings to those already operating there.

The service will start on December 1, initially transiting via Brussels. It will leave Manchester at 19:00, arriving at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport at 06:00, providing significant onward connectivity options from the African hub. On the return it departs Addis Ababa at 00:45 and arrives in Manchester at 06:55.

Manchester Airport CEO Andrew Cowan said: “The introduction of this route underlines the critical role Manchester Airport plays in connecting the people and businesses of the North to the world’s most important markets.

“While we have served a number of African holiday destinations for many years, this service will provide vital connectivity to one of the continent’s most important hub airports.

“That will unlock dozens more destinations across Africa through Ethiopian Airlines’ unrivalled network, meaning the North will be better connected to this part of the world than ever before.”

Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde Gebremariam said: “We are elated to start services to Manchester, our second destination in the UK next to London Heathrow which we have been serving since 1973. As the leading African carrier with the widest network in the continent, passengers from Manchester will enjoy convenient and seamless connectivity options to 58 African destinations operated with cutting-edge fleet  like the B-787 and A350 which offer our  passengers unparalleled comfort on-board our flights, along with our African flavoured Ethiopian hospitality.”

“The socio-economic implication of the new flight is immense. With vast investment and trade potentials between Africa and the UK, the upcoming flight holds the promise of boosting trade, investment and tourism with ample business opportunities for investors and business people from both regions.”

Alex Marshall, Group Marketing and Compliance Director, Clarke Energy (Liverpool) & Northern Powerhouse Export Champion, said: “With our extensive operations across Africa, we are pleased to learn about this new flight to Addis Ababa from Manchester Airport, giving us extensive new route options across the continent.

“The route has the potential to be a massive benefit to our business through journey time savings and the excellent onward connectivity Ethiopian Airlines will provide.”

Sheona Southern, Managing Director of Marketing Manchester, said: “The new route connecting Manchester with Addis Ababa is a great success for Greater Manchester and for the wider North of England. This opens up Greater Manchester to visitors, businesses investors and students from a new continent.

“Greater Manchester’s growth strategy has internationalisation at its heart, and Manchester has set a clear target to become a top global city by 2035. If we’re to achieve this aim, it’s vital that we continue to increase our connections with major international hubs, increasing the opportunities for global networks to choose Manchester as a place to visit, meet, invest and study in.

“In this respect, this new route with Ethiopian Airlines is a huge step forward.”

Ethiopia is Africa’s second largest country by population, with its hub airport perfectly placed to provide onward connectivity, particularly to sub-Saharan countries.

The new route is set to benefit 400,000 people in Manchester Airport’s extensive catchment area, who currently travel to Addis Ababa and other key cities across Africa via other means. The new service has therefore been heralded by Northern businesses and organisations, with the route saving travel time and unlocking vital economic, trade and investment opportunities.

Ethiopian Airlines was founded in 1945 and from its hub in Addis Ababa has connections to 58 cities across Africa, and a further 67 international routes across Europe, Asia and the Americas. The multi award-winning airline offers passengers an excellent on-board service including meals, beverage and inflight entertainment.

Business class passengers are served a variety of dishes including Ethiopian cuisine along with a selection of appetizers and beverages. A rich inflight entertainment which comprises of wide ranging audio and video contents as well as games is also available for passengers to enjoy while flying. In economy, passengers are treated to different meals and beverages along with inflight entertainment package.

The new route is testament to Manchester Airport’s position as the second hub in the UK, the global gateway for the North. It has introduced a wealth of key long-haul routes in recent years including – Beijing, Houston, San Francisco, Singapore, Muscat, Boston and Los Angeles.

Ethiopian is a multi-award winning airline. On November 8, 2017, SKYTRAX, the most prestigious international air transport standards and quality rating organization, has certified Ethiopian as Four Star Airline. SKYTRAX has also awarded Ethiopian as SKYTRAX World Airline Award for Best Airline Staff in Africa, two times, and earlier in 2017 Ethiopian has received SKYTRAX World Airline Award for Best Airline in Africa. The Airline was recently awarded “The Best Business Class in Africa and Indian Ocean” title by TripAdvisor, one of the largest and most reputed global travel sites.

Return economy fares start from £499 with business class at £1,999.

JW Lees and Northern Monk exciting new summer pale ale to mark Manchester beer Week 2018

0

Manchester’s JW Lees brewery, which has been brewing real ales since 1828, has put cross-Pennine rivalry to one side in order to join forces with highly-rated Leeds craft brewery Northern Monk on an exciting, one-off brew.

Two of the north’s most celebrated beer cities have formed an alliance for the official beer of this year’s Manchester Beer Week. It will appear on draught at venues across Greater Manchester during the festival – which runs from June 29 to July 8 2018 – with bottles also available exclusively from the Co-op, partner of Manchester Beer Week, as part of the community retailer’s commitment to celebrating and showcasing local food and drink.

The beer will aim to reflect the combination of JW Lees’ rich heritage and Northern Monk’s bold, cutting-edge approach, and billed as Summer Pale Ale.

Manchester Beer Week has once again teamed-up with the Co-op – with the official beer to be stocked in over 50 of the community retailer’s stores across the region.

“Some people might question why a brewery from Leeds is helping to brew the official beer of Manchester Beer Week but we saw this as a great opportunity to foster collaboration between two great beer cities, as well as the old and new worlds,” said Manchester Beer Week organiser Connor Murphy.

“This year we are looking to highlight the great things happening throughout the UK’s independent brewing industry – particularly through initiatives such as the Manchester Beer Week City Clash – and Northern Monk are currently one of the shining lights in the North. We were excited to see what happened when we paired them up with Manchester’s oldest family-owned brewery.”

Simon Dryell, Head of Local Sourcing at the Co-op, said: “We are delighted to partner with Manchester Beer Week. Locally brewed ale is an exciting category, where we can see continued sustainable growth as craft ale followers look for something that tastes different, while retaining the passion, history and tradition that goes into brewing quality ales. As a community retailer, the Co-op is committed to investing in its local communities, providing what our members and customers want, when and where they need it, and exploring new ways to showcase, celebrate and support great quality locally produced food and drink.”

JW Lees previously brewed the official beer for Manchester Beer Week in 2016, an equally eye-catching collaboration with prominent Mancunian craft brewery Cloudwater.

Meanwhile, Northern Monk is one of the best-respected breweries in the UK’s booming craft beer scene and is set for rapid expansion after smashing the £500,000 target it set during a recent crowdfunding campaign. The Leeds brewery eventually raised an impressive £1,500,000.

Michael Lees-Jones, Head Brewer at JW Lees said: “Manchester Beer Week is unique, it’s an event that makes really interesting beer things happen for all kinds of breweries. We’ve developed a great recipe with Northern Monk that’ll show off what we’re both about, it’s something that drinkers will definitely enjoy.

“In a few weeks we’re launching a microbrewery to showcase the art, skill and fun of brewing. Collaborating with breweries like Northern Monk, Marble and Beer Nouveau gives you a flavour of what it’s all about.”

Hand-held ‘robot’ puts Manchester hospital into euro top ten

0

Spire Manchester Hospital has become the first hospital in the North of England – and one of only ten in the whole of Europe – to carry out a total knee replacement operation using the new Navio robot-assisted system.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Winston Kim carried out the joint replacement procedure using the hand-held NAVIO ‘robot’ which is in use at only three private hospitals in the UK.

Designed and developed by internationally renowned technology experts Smith and Nephew, the system allows surgeons to minimise the amount of bone removed from a damaged knee before positioning the new implant in exactly the right place to achieve optimum joint stability.

Unlike other robotic-assisted tools, NAVIO takes away the need for a CT scan before an operation. Instead a probe feeds a 3D ‘roadmap’ of the knee into a computer, providing the surgeon with all the information needed to create a specific surgical plan for each individual patient.

The computer then feeds back information about the knee, allowing the surgeon to accurately remove damaged bone to make way for the implant. If the tool is passed over a part of the knee that doesn’t need removing then the cutters automatically stop…not starting again until it reaches parts mapped out for removal.

Mr Kim explained: “It allows for a more precise and accurate knee replacement implant placement, tailored to the patient’s anatomy and alignment. This increases the likelihood of a more natural-feeling knee after surgery. I believe this will have the potential to reduce the requirement for revision surgery and increase the lifespan of the knee replacement.

“The first operation went very well and I am confident of an excellent outcome. This really is the cutting-edge of joint-replacement technology and I am sure it will prove a great success for surgeons and patients alike.”

Hospital Director, Andrew Eadsforth added: “Medical technology is developing at a very fast rate and at Spire Manchester Hospital we invest in technology to ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation.

“The NAVIO is in use at only three private hospitals in the UK and I am proud to say we are one of those. This shows our determination to ensure our leading consultants have the best equipment available and that our patients continue to benefit from our commitment to first class healthcare.”
