High Sheriff appoints first Ambassador

0

Greater Manchester’s new High Sheriff has appointed her first ambassador as she begins her term in the ceremonial office.

Entrepreneur and UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones MBE joins Dr Robina Shah’s ‘Team High Sheriff’ initiative to drive lasting impactful change for young people in her year-long term.

Jones becomes the first of three ambassadors to take ownership of areas of Team High Sheriff, including Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Health and Social Care, and the Football Community.

He said: “I am delighted to be the first ambassadorial appointment to Dr Shah’s team. The role of High Sheriff is one steeped in tradition and is synonymous with creating a lasting impact.

“Dr Shah’s vision to use her time as custodian of the role to drive change in Greater Manchester is one that I fully support and I’m excited to help her push it forward.”

Jones’ technology firm UKFast is providing free hosting and web design services for Dr Shah’s term as the High Sheriff. This includes the build and launch of a new website created by UKFast apprentices.

Dr Shah said: “It’s incredibly exciting to begin this role with such momentum. To have the support of one of Manchester’s most well-known brands is fantastic. Combining the passion and drive that Team High Sheriff has with Lawrence’s years of expertise and business acumen is a true recipe for success.

“I am looking forward to appointing and announcing five more ambassadors to lead Team High Sheriff in due course.”

UKFast was last year recognised with a High Sheriff Award by outgoing High Sheriff Gerry Yeung OBE for ‘great and valuable services to the community’.

The High Sheriff role is an appointment made by the Queen to actively lend support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and to the voluntary sector.

High Sheriffs also assist Community Foundations and local charities working with vulnerable and other people both in endorsing and helping to raise the profile of their valuable work.

Infamous rogue trader Nick Leeson and TV star Alexis Conran light up Equilibrium’s inaugural wealth conference

0

More than 200 people attended Equilibrium Asset Management’s first ever wealth conference Equinox Live – with a raft of headline speakers including Alexis Conran and Nick Leeson entertaining the crowd.

Held at Alderley Park The Real Hustle’s Conran and infamous Rogue Trader Leeson – who single-handedly brought down England’s oldest bank, Barings, in 1995 and subsequently spent four years in prison – each spoke about their compelling life stories.

Other speakers on the day included global market strategist Michael J. Bell, behavioural economist Greg Davies and fund manager Gervais Williams.

A handful of Greater Manchester-based 10 to 14 year olds from international educational charity Debate Mate also wowed the crowd during a live debate on whether the rich should pay more tax.

Kicking off the conference, Equilibrium founder Colin Lawson – whose Wilmslow-based company manages over £800 million of assets for over 1,000 families – told the crowd that Equinox Live had been designed to ‘inform, educate and entertain’.

Keynote speaker Leeson, who was played by Hollywood star Ewan McGregor in 1999 British biographical drama film Rogue Trader, described his life as “a cautionary tale of what can go wrong if you don’t manage things correctly”.

“When it comes to my story there’s so much to be learned,” said Leeson, whose talk also touched on his personal insights into the economy.

“But it always comes back to recruiting the right people and having the right controls and processes in place.

“From Equilibrium’s perspective it’s clear how transparent they are. You can see how close Colin still is to the business. And I’m sure the senior board are as well, which has to be the case.”

Conran, born in Paris and raised in Greece, told the packed auditorium his ‘five pillars to a scam’ – misdirection, time pressure, opportunity, social compliance and social proof.

In between showing clips of scams on his BBC show The Real Hustle, Conran added: “It’s natural instinct that we all behave similar to what others are doing around us, a herd mentality.”

Michael Bell, Global Market Strategist, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, later shared his views during an intriguing 40-minute ‘insight into the global economy and the forces shaping it’ presentation.

He said: “An economist who can’t predict a recession is a little bit like a nature guide who knows a lot about the plants and trees but hasn’t spotted the fact that there is a bear stood behind you.

“I think where economists are going wrong generally, apart from the fact that a lot of theory they teach at university and school is wrong, is trying to forecast further out than is possible.

“I think trying to predict recessions is a lot more like trying to predict a volcanic eruption than it is trying to predict an earthquake.

“The focus should be on what historically has done a good job of warning you that you are getting to that turning point where the economy is about to go into recession and with it you are going to have a bear market.”

The penultimate speaker at Alderley Park’s Equinox Live was behavioural economist Greg Davies, who focussed on ‘action bias’ when it comes to investing, and the temptation, particularly under moments of stress, to be seen to be doing something rather than doing nothing.

“It turns out, for instance,” said Greg, “that goalkeepers in professional football dive to the left or right about 90 per cent of the time, yet about 40 per cent of the time the ball goes down the middle.

“On a pure statistical basis, goalkeepers could probably save penalties more if they did less.

“The problem with this, is it’s one thing to fail to save a goal while diving spectacularly in the wrong direction. It’s quite another not to save a goal when you’ve stood in the middle like an idiot doing nothing.”

Milton Group Senior Executive Director & Fund Manager Gervais Williams gave the final speech which focussed on highly correlated assets and the diversification risk that this presents.

Equinox Live comes after Equilibrium recently landed £80m of net asset wins in six months – surpassing its half year target by £30m.

The company, which now employs 78 staff and turned over more than £7 million at the end of its last fiscal year in 2017, was also named in the top 10 best small companies to work for in the UK by The Sunday Times for the second consecutive year.

Speaking after Equinox Live, Equilibrium founder Colin Lawson said he was delighted to have brought the event to life.

“Our general ethos is to constantly evolve and adapt whilst allowing us to deliver the best and most efficient service to our clients.

“We feel the creation of Equinox Live very much fitted with the ethos.”

He added: “I’m very thankful to all the Equilibrium staff, our headline speakers, Debate Mate and those who attended for making Equinox Live such a huge success.

“We wanted to provide a unique opportunity for those eager to learn more about making the most of their assets and feel that has very much been achieved.

“The aim is to now grow this conference and to run it annually.”

Local insurance broker raises thousands for the Alex Hulme Foundation

0

Employees at Manchester-based insurance broker Gallagher have raised over £12,000 in the space of one year for the Alex Hulme Foundation, with every penny helping to fund a clinical research project that will ultimately result in improved cancer treatment for children over the years to come. This month’s donation of £12,396 forms part of an ongoing fundraising programme, which will see the broker continue its support throughout 2018.

The foundation is dedicated to the life of Alex Hulme, from Trafford, who sadly lost his battle with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2011. The foundation was set up in 2011 by Alex’s parents, Dave and Nicola Hulme, with the aim to fund and support the research and treatment of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in children.

As well as raising £12,000, through a series of fundraising activities, including running the Greater Manchester Marathon, and in-branch activity, such as ‘Dress-Down Fridays’,  Gallagher has been able to provide more hands-on support to the charity. Team members have applied their administrative expertise and manpower to help co-ordinate and run events, notably the Annual Star Ball in 2017. Gallagher was also able to secure significant sponsorships for the ball, which has helped to raise the profile of the charity amongst local businesses and organisations in Manchester.

In addition, the Gallagher team in Manchester successfully secured extra funding for the Foundation by nominating it for Gallagher’s annual ‘Making a Difference’ awards programme. The nationwide initiative was launched to provide financial assistance to smaller, local charities, with Gallagher inviting its 50-plus offices across the UK to put forward nominations. The Alex Hulme Foundation was chosen as a finalist and was awarded £5,000, which went towards the £12,000 total.

Every penny raised by Gallagher will go directly into funding the clinical research project to investigate B-Cell NHL run by Dr Suzanne Turner. Donations and fundraising have been able to cover the costs of vital lab equipment, a lab assistant and a PhD student, all of which will ultimately result in significantly improved treatment of cancer in children for years to come.

Simon Carlon, Account Executive for Gallagher in Manchester, based on New Bailey Street, said: “As a community broker, Gallagher is extremely passionate about providing support to local charities. For us, it’s not just about raising vital funds; we want to go the extra mile by offering our practical help through volunteering and lending our expertise to the Foundation, and I’m extremely proud of the team here in Manchester for their work to date.

“We hope that our support can allow Dave and Nicola to continue with their incredible work, and the money raised will make a real difference in their quest to understand and treat Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.”

Thanking the team for their efforts, Dave Hulme, Chair of Trustees at the Alex Hulme Foundation, commented: “We want to say a huge thank you to Gallagher for its ongoing support. We have been overwhelmed with the efforts and generosity in raising funds for the foundation and we look forward to strengthening our relationship throughout 2018.”

JMR Solicitors help boxer win record-breaking legal battle

0

Manchester-based JMR Solicitors, toasted victory after a battle which helped British Boxer, Mohammed Ali Zahid, from Rochdale, obtain his professional boxing licence, despite being diagnosed with type one diabetes. The Rochdale boxer initially planned to turn professional back in 2015, but BBBofC’s rules at the time meant boxers with type one diabetes were unable to get a license.   It was ruled that Ali could keep his licence, in this record-breaking case.

JMR Solicitors went to Cardiff last week, to represent Muhammad Ali and watched on as they saw Ali make history after becoming the first boxer in the country with type one diabetes to be granted a professional licence. The British Boxing Board of Control has its own rules and regulations to become a professional boxer at present. One of which is that individuals with type one diabetes cannot become professional boxers. This has been overturned in JMR client’s case and the BBBofC’s are in the process of reviewing their regulations.

Ali has become the first boxer in the UK with type one diabetes to be granted a professional licence by the British Boxing Board of Control. The 25-year-old is delighted that things are now finally back on track, and he is thankful to those around him who have helped him get to this point.

The fact that JMR Solicitors represented the boxer has meant that individuals  with Diabetes in the UK will now be able to apply for their professional boxing licence.  They have changed UK regulations which are controlled and governed by the BBBofC.

Marium Razzaq, Solicitor and owner of JMR solicitors, says:

“I chose to represent the client as I thought it was discriminatory and unfair for the Board to prejudice individuals with conditions such as diabetes. By having this regulation changed it truly has made history in the world of British Boxing as individuals with diabetes who wish to become professional boxers will now be able to do so.

I feel honoured to be a part of the change in UK Boxing regulations as this really is revolutionary as it is the first time in history that a professional boxing licence has been given to an individual with diabetes.”

After almost three years of perseverance from Ali’s side, he was finally granted his license during a meeting with the board on Wednesday 9th May, as the case provided crucial documentation proving that his state would not disturb his ability to box.

Ali told Manchester Evening News:

“We were able to put together a protocol and show the British Boxing Board of Control why I should get my license.

“To get the approval at the meeting on Wednesday was amazing, and I’m already excited thinking about my professional career.”

Manchester Central named ‘Best City Centre Venue Space’

Manchester Central fought off competition from a number of UK venues to be crowned ‘Best City Centre Venue Space’ at the hotly contested National Venue Awards. It was a double success for the venue, who also received silver for ‘Best Event Venue over 1000 attendees’.

In their inaugural year, the National Venue Awards give a badge of excellence for venues
