0

CMS has appointed Nigel Lewis as a partner in its Infrastructure, Construction and Energy (ICE) Disputes team to lead the practice in Manchester. The CMS ICE Disputes team consists of over 50 specialist lawyers based in offices in Aberdeen, Dubai, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Sheffield and Singapore. Nigel joins the firm from Gowling WLG.

Nigel is a Construction & Engineering dispute resolution specialist with over 18 years’ experience advising on projects in the construction, infrastructure and energy sectors. He has acted for many of the UK’s largest developers and contractors in some of the largest ‘big ticket’ disputes, and more recently has expanded his practice to focus on the real estate market, acting for some of the largest developers and financial institutions in the UK. Nigel’s reported cases include a number of landmark decisions and he has provided project advisory services on some of the most significant and complex developments in the UK.

Chris Hallam, Head of the Energy, Project and Construction team in Manchester comments: “Nigel is a great addition to our Manchester team and brings added firepower to the ICE disputes practice across the North of England. The ongoing regeneration of Manchester, combined with the devolution deal, the embryonic Northern Powerhouse initiative and the recently published plans of UK’s first sub-national transport body – Transport for the North –  means the region is expected to see significant growth in construction, infrastructure and energy projects in the coming years. Having Nigel on the ground will ensure that we can meet the needs of our clients, both in the UK and internationally, who are looking to invest in this thriving region.”

Commenting on his appointment, Nigel said: “I am delighted to join CMS at a time of real growth for the firm, following the merger with Nabarro and Olswang. The range and quality of real estate work being done by the team out of Manchester is impressive, and I hope to build on this existing platform to strengthen our offering across Infrastructure, Construction and Energy.”

CMS’ Manchester office has been going from strength to strength as the firm continues to support its clients’ growth targets across the North. Over the last six months, the team has acted on a number of high profile projects including its advice to Hong Kong-based developer Far East Consortium International on one of Manchester’s most ambitious housing-led regeneration projects – the Northern Gateway – which is expected to generate more than £1bn of investment over the next decade.

Manchester Airport launches biggest ever trade incentive with five Minis to be won

0

Manchester Airport is set to launch its biggest ever trade incentive to mark its forthcoming 80th birthday.

The UK’s global gateway in the North is offering travel agents who book flights and holidays from Manchester the chance to win one of five Minis and 250 bottles of champagne.

Agents will be divided into five areas – Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Birmingham and above, and below Birmingham, with one Mini up for grabs in each location.  One booking from Manchester Airport will equal one entry into the incentive.

Patrick Alexander, Head of Marketing at Manchester Airport, said: “To mark our 80th birthday we wanted to do something very special which is why we’re launching our biggest ever trade incentive to mark the occasion.

“Travel agents are hugely important to the airport and we appreciate every booking they make for travel through the airport.

“What better way to celebrate our eightieth birthday and to reward all of the hardworking agents that sell Manchester Airport.”

Manchester Airport is the UK’s third largest, and on Saturday June 25th 1938, it was officially opened by an air display from the Royal Air Force by the command of Sir Kingsley Wood, his Majesty’s Secretary of State for Air. Operations began two days later and in the first 12 months, the airport handled 7,600 passengers, fast forward to now and it handles more than 27 million a year.

Growth in flexible working space in Manchester driven by demand from thriving media and tech sectors

0

Rising demand from businesses for flexible working space has sparked a boom in the provision of serviced offices in Manchester in 2017, according to the latest office market snapshot by real estate advisors Colliers International.

The report showed serviced office providers addressed the need for flexible working from small and growing operators by taking in excess of 100,000 sq ft of space in Manchester in the first three quarters of 2017.

Major developments included global co-working specialist WeWork following the opening of its first office outside London at No 1 Spinningfields by adding another 44,000 sq ft at One St Peter’s Square and property developer Allied London launching its own co-working brand All Work & Social to operate alongside WeWork at Spinningfields.

Media and technology businesses drove much of the demand for flexible working space with 48 deals in the first nine months of 2017, representing about 22 per cent of all office requirement transactions in Manchester as firms spread into the central business district from the Northern Quarter, Salford Quays and MediaCity UK.

Major new office schemes including the XYZ Building at Spinningfields and Neo by Bruntwood are attracting media and tech operators with rents of up to £30 per sq ft being achieved, according to the report.

Peter Gallagher (pictured), director, national offices at the Manchester office of Colliers International, said: “Greater Manchester’s booming media and tech sector, making the region increasingly the Silicon Valley of the North, has a strengthening requirement for office space tailor-made to meet its needs so it’s no surprise to see it play a major role in the take-up of modern and flexible office space throughout 2017.”

Colliers’ Manchester office market snapshot for the third quarter of 2017 also reported ongoing buoyant demand for office space in general with 447,809 sq ft transacted in 79 deals, including nine deals of more than 10,000 sq ft.

Take-up of space in the period surpassed that of the same quarter in 2016 by 68 per cent and when added to the first two quarters, total take-up for 2017 so far totalled 938,645 sq ft – putting the city office market on track to equal the 2016 total of 1.3m sq ft transacted.

The largest letting in 2017 remains the 77,449 sq ft let to the Department for Work and Pensions at Two St Peter’s Square, followed by law firm Clyde & Co taking 69,000 sq ft at Royal Exchange.

Large transactions in the pipeline include law firm Eversheds Sutherland seeking some 45,000 sq ft and Amazon’s requirement for 70,000 sq ft of office space for its first UK headquarters of a portfolio of warehouses.

Peter Gallagher cautioned that an ongoing lack of new and available Grade A office stock before 2019 would mean some potential occupiers having to consider good quality refurbished space, with the only speculative schemes starting on site in 2017 being Hanover NOMA, Landmark (Odeon), 11 York Street and 125 Deansgate (Lincoln House).

Pioneering group that brings music to deprived parts of Manchester wins national award

0

A group of Manchester musicians have won a national award for their pioneering work to bring singing and music to those who cannot otherwise afford it including refugees, migrants and schoolchildren.

The Olympias Music Foundation runs lessons, workshops and choirs in Longsight and Rusholme, wards within some of the highest levels of urban deprivation in the UK.

They won the Grassroots category of the Community Integration Awards for their work which they say promotes confidence and integration amongst vulnerable participants who also include victims of modern slavery and domestic violence.

The classes are run students from the Royal Northern College of Music. Their sessions give participants routine and a goal to work towards, as well as a chance to meet with other individuals in a similar situation.

Jo Yee Cheung, Olympias Music Foundation Director, said: “Winning the Grassroots Champion Award has been a tremendous experience – from the day spent making the film in Manchester, all of the expert help we’ve received to develop and expand our organisation, and of course the fantastic awards ceremony in London.

“The process has been so encouraging for both the team and the groups we work with. We are very grateful to the Community Integration Awards for this wonderful opportunity and excited about what the future has in store for the Foundation.

“Music is a powerful tool for social good – it transcends language and culture, raises people up and brings people together. However, much work is still needed to democratise music and to make it something that is not only the prestige of the privileged but something that everyone can access, regardless of how much money you have or where you live. We’ve seen children and adults transform as into happier, more confident and emboldened versions of themselves a result of musical engagement. We hope that our work will continue to help many others, and inspire those we help to share their talents with the rest of the community.”

Jo and her team collected their award at a ceremony in London, presented by the Mexican human rights activist Laura Alvarez and the Chair of the MigrationWork Trust Rachel Marangozov.

Rachel Marangozov said: “We’re thrilled to have received so many incredible entries to this year’s award and want to congratulate our winner and runners up for their outstanding work.

“At a time when there is a distinct lack of central guidance or funding for integration work in the UK, it is often left to organisations such as these to plug the gaps in support and advance positive integration outcomes for their local communities. It is absolutely vital that we recognise and celebrate the hard work that they do; this is what the Community Integration Awards are all about.”

Manchester Arena heroes return to venue for key 103 concert

0

Heroes from the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital helped to celebrate the launch of their new charity partnership with Stagecoach Manchester.

100 nurses, who were all involved in treating children injured in the arena attack were gifted tickets by Key 103 to the Key Live 2017 concert (held on 9 November) while Stagecoach Manchester, who sponsored the concert,  invited Lily Harrison, her friends and family as VIP guests.

Lily, who was looked after at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital following the blast, was treated to performances by Rita Ora, Louis Tomlinson and Zara Larson alongside a packed house at the arena.

The tickets for Lily and her family were a gift from the bus operator as it kicked off a two- year partnership with Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity.

The charity partnership announcement comes on the back of Stagecoach Manchester announcing its staff and passengers raised over £21,900 for Prevent Breast Cancer.

Elisabeth Tasker, Stagecoach Manchester managing director, said: “The victims and emergency services showed tremendous bravery both on the night of the tragic incident and in the months following and a number of our staff and buses were also involved on the night of the attack in helping to get people to hospital. This led our staff to throw their weight behind the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity by selecting them as our charity partner for the coming two years.

“I’ve heard Lily had a fabulous time at the concert along with the nurses from the hospital, and we’ll now get our heads down at Stagecoach Manchester to think as creatively as possible to raise much needed funds.”

Joel Oxberry, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity comments: “We’re thrilled that Stagecoach has chosen to support our Children’s Hospital over the next two years. Support like this from local businesses is absolutely invaluable to the charity, and helps to make a real and lasting difference to the poorly children treated at the hospital. We’re looking forward to working together on fundraising ideas and can’t wait to get started!”

Lauren Harrison, Lily’s mother said: “As a devoted pop princess this was a real treat for Lily, we all had such a fantastic time at the concert. Ever since the attack we have been fundraising in any way that we can to give back to the hospital and want to say another massive thank you for all that they have done for our family.”

MAG secures £300m bond in capital markets

0

MAG, the UK’s leading airport group, has priced a £300m, 22-year bond, with an annual coupon of 2.875% and order book that was over three times oversubscribed at around £1bn.

MAG will use the proceeds of the bond to fund the transformational capital investment programmes that the Group is undertaking at both Manchester and London Stansted Airports.

Work has already begun on delivering the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (MANTP), a £1 billion programme of work which will allow the airport to serve more passengers in its terminals and make fuller use of its current runway capacity. London Stansted Airport will commence the first stage of its works to transform the current terminal building into a dedicated departures building in 2018, in advance of a new arrivals building being built next door. The initial work will involve the creation of new check-in space and seating areas in the terminal.

Neil Thompson, Chief Financial Officer for MAG, said: “The success of the bond is a testament to the strong financial performance of the Group over the past 3 years, which has delivered over 40% earnings growth, and demonstrates the confidence of a wide number of UK and international blue-chip investors in MAG’s future growth strategy.

“Manchester and London Stansted airports both provide vital international connectivity for the UK with the Group operating routes to over 280 destinations. Our plans for significant investment at Manchester and Stansted will not only improve the experience for passengers and airlines using our airports but also provide the foundations to unlock their significant future growth potential.”

MAG mandated NatWest Markets as Arranger and Bookrunner on the transaction, alongside Barclays and BNP Paribas who also acted as Bookrunners. Co-Managers were CIBC, Handelsbanken, MUFG and NAB.
