Weathering steel offers lasting architectural appeal, but correct installation is essential

From contemporary housing developments to landscaped outdoor spaces, Corten steel is helping designers achieve a distinctive architectural finish without the need for regular painting or refinishing. Its naturally developing protective surface makes it an attractive option for projects where durability and reduced maintenance are priorities. But the material needs to be specified and installed correctly to deliver the expected performance. Buy Metal Online, a leading UK sheet metal supplier, has outlined the key points project teams should understand before incorporating weathering steel into their designs.

The guidance comes as the architectural sector considers the importance of resilient residential development following World Architecture Day on 5th October. The 2026 theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build It.”, has placed renewed attention on the materials and design choices that can support buildings over the long term.

One of the first decisions when specifying Corten is whether to use raw or pre-weathered steel. Buy Metal Online supplies both options, with raw material initially appearing much like standard dark mild steel. Its characteristic finish develops over time as the steel reacts naturally with its environment. This weathering process typically takes between six and twelve months, with the surface moving through shades of vibrant orange before settling into a darker, earthy brown. The protective patina forms through alternating wet and dry conditions, creating a dense oxide layer, as explained in SSAB’s COR-TEN® A design guidance.

Designers also need to account for the movement of rainwater across the material. While the patina is forming, water can wash loose rust particles from the surface. If this reaches porous materials such as pale concrete, natural stone or untreated timber, it can leave lasting stains. Drainage channels and sacrificial gravel borders can be incorporated to manage the run-off and protect surrounding finishes.

Water management must be considered alongside ventilation. Corten needs sufficient airflow to weather properly. Where moisture is allowed to collect or remain stagnant, the protective patina may fail to stabilise, potentially contributing to premature corrosion.

Material thickness is another important factor. For substantial planters and façade applications, Buy Metal Online recommends sheet thicknesses of 2.0mm to 3.0mm. This allows for surface oxidation while preserving the strength of the steel beneath. Its bespoke cutting service also enables customers to receive sheets prepared to their required dimensions, helping simplify on-site assembly.

For applications where Corten forms part of a load-bearing structure or a complex façade system, material selection and cutting are only part of the process. Qualified structural engineers or architects should be consulted to check that the design meets the necessary structural and long-term safety requirements.

Sara Halman Thompson, Managing Director at Buy Metal Online, comments: “Corten brings a beautifully dynamic, organic texture to architectural projects. Whether supplying raw or pre-weathered sheets, our role is to provide premium metal precisely cut to specification. By understanding how the metal weathers, bleeds, and interacts with its environment, project teams can design structures that look spectacular and stand the test of time”.
