Membership Bespoke and Apprentago have joined forces to introduce Sector Futures, a partnership initiative aimed at helping trade associations deliver greater value to their members while creating a potential new income stream. The initiative connects member businesses with apprenticeship recruitment, funding guidance and specialist training, giving associations a practical way to address workforce challenges without having to develop and operate their own apprenticeship service.
For trade associations, the partnership provides an opportunity to generate revenue as member businesses access apprenticeship services. Potential returns will depend on the size of the association, member participation and the commercial terms agreed. An online calculator enables associations to explore an illustrative estimate based on their own circumstances.
The launch comes as apprenticeship starts in England reached 308,770 between August 2025 and April 2026, an 8.7% increase compared with the same period a year earlier, according to Department for Education figures. More than half of all starts involved people aged 25 or over.
Changes to apprenticeship funding in England mean eligible employers can receive government support covering up to 100% of training and assessment costs in certain circumstances. Additional hiring payments may also be available where the relevant eligibility criteria are satisfied.
The scale of the opportunity is considerable. The Trade Association Forum (TAF) identifies close to 1,000 active trade associations across the UK. Its own membership includes more than 180 associations collectively representing 200,000 businesses. Across sectors including manufacturing, construction, transport and professional services, these organisations have established relationships that can help employers respond to skills shortages and build their future workforce.
Despite their influence, many associations lack the capacity or specialist knowledge required to manage apprenticeship recruitment, funding and training arrangements for members.
Sector Futures addresses this challenge by giving associations a route to apprenticeship support without requiring them to establish a dedicated service internally.
Through the partnership, member businesses can access apprentice attraction and recruitment, advice on funding eligibility, sector-specific training options and guidance throughout the process, from initial enquiry to the apprentice starting their programme.
The model also gives participating associations the potential to earn additional commercial income when their members take up the services.
Bringing association insight and apprenticeship expertise together
Sector Futures brings together Membership Bespoke’s more than 15 years of experience supporting trade associations and Apprentago’s nationwide apprenticeship platform, candidate attraction expertise and network of specialist training providers. The partnership is designed to simplify access to apprenticeships for employers while helping associations enhance their member offering and explore new revenue opportunities.
Dennis Howes, Co-Founder of Membership Bespoke, said: “Having worked closely with trade associations for more than 15 years, particularly around recruitment and talent, we hear first-hand about the skills and workforce challenges facing both associations and the industries they represent.
“Trade associations are in a unique position because they know their industries, understand where skills gaps are emerging and already have trusted relationships with the organisations trying to solve them.
“Sector Futures gives them a practical way to use that position to help their members find apprentices, understand and access available funding and navigate the process without the association having to build an apprenticeship service itself.
“Importantly, it can also create an additional source of revenue for the association at the same time as delivering something of genuine value to its members.”
Carlo Weaver, Founder & CEO of Apprentago, added: “SMEs are the lifeblood of the British economy, yet many businesses that could benefit from taking on an apprentice simply do not know where to start, how to access funding or who can support them with training.
“At Apprentago, we believe every young person should know which employers in their local area are offering apprenticeships, and every employer should have a straightforward way to find and develop the next generation of talent.
“Through Sector Futures, we’re bringing those two worlds together by working with trade associations that already have trusted relationships with thousands of businesses across the UK.
“It makes sense socially and commercially. We are helping people access opportunities, supporting employers to grow through apprenticeships and enabling trade associations to be financially rewarded for helping to make that happen.”
Apprenticeships offer opportunities at every career stage
Sector Futures supports apprenticeship pathways across a range of industries through a network of training providers, including specialists in particular occupations and sectors.
Department for Education figures record 161,670 apprenticeship starts among people aged 25 and over between August 2025 and April 2026. This represents 52.4% of all starts and a 17.5% increase on the previous year.
Apprenticeships can provide opportunities for career changers and experienced employees as well as younger people entering employment, depending on the programme and applicable funding rules.
Understanding apprenticeship funding
The funding available for an apprenticeship depends on the employer, the apprentice and the programme selected. Eligibility requirements apply.
In England, eligible non-levy-paying employers can receive full government funding for training and assessment for apprentices aged 16 to 24, up to the relevant funding band maximum. For apprentices aged 25 and over, the standard government contribution is 95%.[2]
Other support may include £1,000 payments for certain eligible apprentices and foundation apprenticeship incentives. Under the October 2026 policy, a £2,000 hiring payment is available for qualifying starts.
Exploring the commercial potential
Sector Futures offers associations a way to explore additional income linked to the uptake of apprenticeship services among their members.
There is no single revenue forecast for every association. The online calculator allows organisations to model illustrative outcomes using their membership figures and anticipated participation. Actual returns will depend on member take-up and the commercial arrangements agreed.
Membership Bespoke is inviting trade associations to discuss how the partnership could work for their sector, including the benefits for members and the potential commercial return.
