England vs Australia: Fifth ODI decided by DLS as visitors win series 3-2 after rain

Australia hit 165 from the first 20.4 overs of their innings to win by 49 runs through DLS in the fifth ODI at Bristol on Sunday.

Rain stopped play with Australia two wickets down and chasing 310 after England collapsed from 202-2.

The hosts lost their next seven wickets for 74 runs, with Adil Rashid’s 36 offering a much-needed measure of relief.

England vs Australia score

England’s promising situation earlier in the day had been helped by a century off 86 balls for Ben Duckett, who was caught for 107.

Harry Brook hit 72 off 52 deliveries and Phil Salt registered 45 off 27 but Travis Head’s four wickets for 28 off 6.2 overs did much of the damage.

Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Hardie and Adam Zampa took two wickets each before Matt Short hit 58 off 30 balls for Australia, including seven fours and four sixes, and Head was caught by Salt for 31.

Steve Smith was on 36 not out and Josh Inglis on 28 when the covers went on, with further rain appearing to scupper any hopes of resuming.

Ben Duckett ‘looks right’

“It is a slightly disappointing end, given that they were 205-2 at the halfway mark,” former England captain Michael Atherton told Sky Sports.

“They have done well to come back from 2-0 down [in the series], given the side they are playing against, who are almost at full strength.

“Ben Duckett looks just about right at the top of the order and it will be very interesting to see who opens with him.”

England injuries

Brook was made England captain for the series in the absence of Jos Buttler because of a calf problem and towering seamer Josh Hull withdrew with a quad injury.

Joe Root is being rested and Ben Stokes tore a hamstring while playing in The Hundred in August.
