T20 World Cup: India reach Super 8s after surviving USA scare

USA fell agonisingly short of another incredible upset at the T20 World Cup as India battled to a seven-wicket victory to reach the Super 8s.

The World Cup hosts, who claimed the scalp of Pakistan in their last game, batted first but made a disastrous start, falling to 302 in the first over.

But they recovered to post a respectable 100-8, with Indian left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh posting impressive figures of 4-9 in New York.

Hopes of another giant-killing were boosted early on though as India captain Virat Kohli fell for a golden duck on the second ball of the game to Saurabh Netravalkar.

Rohit Sharma followed at just 10-2 before Rishabh Pant went next as India were rocked on 39-3 after 7.3 overs.

The underdogs continued to make it tighter than many had expected, though a pivotal moment came in the 13th over with India at 59-3.

Netravalkar spilled a high catch at short third that would have dismissed Suryakumar Yadav oin 22.

Suryakumar flexed his muscles from that moment on as he and Shivan Dube closed out the victory.

The beaten hosts will also qualify for the Super 8s if they avoid defeat in their final Group A match against Ireland on Friday.
