Nadal withdraws from Indian Wells due to injury

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from Indian Wells after admitting he “can’t lie to himself and the thousands of fans” that he is able to compete at his best level.

The Spaniard, a three-time winner of the desert event, is still battling the hip injury that prompted him to miss the season’s opening grand slam in Australia.

Nadal was due to face Milos Raonic, another player who has struggled with injuries in recent years, in round one but will instead take time away to work on his fitness.

He wrote on Instagram: “It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament.

“Everyone knows how much I love this place and how much I love to play here at Indian Wells. That’s also one of the reasons why I came very early to the desert to practice and try to get ready.

“I have been working hard and practicing and you all know I took a test this weekend but I don’t find myself ready to play at the highest level at such an important event.

“It is not an easy decision, it’s a tough one as a matter of fact but I can’t lie to myself and lie to the thousands of fans. I will miss you all and I am sure the tournament will be a great success.”

Nadal will now focus on the clay court season with the Monte Carlo Masters the next major event on his schedule. Assuming he comes through that okay, he will head to Roland Garros seeking a 15th French Open title.
