Major hazmat incident ongoing at Trafford Park premises

Residents and businesses have been advised to close all doors and windows this morning while a major hazmat incident at Trafford Park.

At around 9am today, police received reports of the incident at the Lanxess manufacturing premises on Tenax Road.

Officers are still at the scene along with 15 fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, as well as staff from North West Ambulance Service.

No one has been reported injured and everyone at the business premises has been accounted for.

A 300m cordon is currently in place with residents and business being advised on health grounds to close all doors and windows, with a number of surrounding roads closed as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Lanxess said: “During the unloading of a supplier’s tanker truck, a chemical leak occurred on the factory premises in Trafford Park at around 9am. Meanwhile, the leakage has been stopped.”

The leaked substance is understood to be phosphorus oxychloride, which is toxic and corrosive and can affect people who breathe it in.
