Drivers warned over hazardous conditions as storm sets in

Motorists are being cautioned about potentially dangerous conditions as Storm Gerrit sweeps across the country tomorrow.

Anticipated to have widespread impact in the UK, various yellow wind and rain warnings are currently in effect.

The AA has issued a warning, advising individuals to prepare for extended travel durations due to the challenging weather conditions.

Storm Gerrit is projected to make its entry from the west early on Wednesday, progressing through the country throughout the day.

Yellow wind warnings are active along the southern coast of England, in north-west England, Wales, most of Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Windy

The Met Office has indicated that wind-prone areas may experience gusts ranging from 50-60mph, escalating to 70mph on elevated terrain and exposed coastlines. The central section of the UK remains the only region without a wind warning.

Heavy rainfall is also anticipated, with an estimated 60mm expected in parts of Northern Ireland and up to 90mm on higher ground in Wales.

Wintry conditions are on the horizon, with a yellow snow warning covering a significant portion of Scotland. Storm Gerrit marks the seventh named storm in the ongoing UK storm season, which commenced in September and extends until August next year. Notably, this storm holds the earliest “G” designation since the storm-naming system was introduced in 2015.

This weather event follows closely on the heels of Storm Pia, which, coinciding with strike action, caused disruptions for holiday travelers. The aftermath included overturned lorries, trees colliding with houses, and power line damage affecting rail services across the country. Storm Pia, named by the Danish Met Office, created significant challenges in Denmark.

With a focus on safety, the AA encourages Wednesday travellers to maintain a greater distance from the vehicle in front due to wet conditions that may prolong braking distances.

Additionally, drivers are cautioned about the sudden impact of high winds in exposed areas.
