Haaland and Doku absent from Manchester City training ahead of Red Star trip

Manchester City duo Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku were both absent from Tuesday’s training session as the UEFA Champions League holders prepare for Wednesday’s trip to Red Star Belgrade.

City are looking to maintain their perfect record in Group G on the final matchday, having wrapped up top spot last time out with a 3-2 comeback win against RB Leipzig.

A foot injury kept Haaland out as City came from behind to beat Luton Town 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday, with boss Pep Guardiola saying the club will take his recovery “week by week, day by day”.

The Norwegian was not expected to feature in Serbia, and he did not participate as City were put through their paces on Tuesday before making the trip.

Winger Doku was also absent, having missed games against Aston Villa and Luton due to a muscle injury which Guardiola said would likely sideline him for a week or two.

While both players face a battle to be fit for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, City are hopeful they will be available when they take part at the FIFA Club World Cup next week.

City will face Mexican side Leon or Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds – winners of the 2022 AFC Champions League – in Tuesday’s semi-final, with the final taking place three days later.
