Manchester to welcome the European Hernia Society in 2022

The European Hernia Society have announced that their 2022 annual congress will be held in Manchester.

Taking place at Manchester Central, the congress will attract over 1000 visitors from 24 different countries and is the first time that the event will be held in England in over 20 years.

The society is a non-profit making international scientific forum that devotes itself to improving patient care in the field of hernia surgery. Mr Aali Sheen, a Consultant Surgeon and Honoury Professor of Surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary, has worked alongside ‘Team Manchester’ on the hard-fought bid.
Mr Sheen said: “I am very excited about bringing this event to Manchester and looking forward to showing our visitors what a great city this is – thank you to the teams at Manchester Central and Marketing Manchester who have made this possible.”

The winning bid was in part due to the continued collaborative approach between Manchester Central and Marketing Manchester and is another great example of their successful partnership, as well as the strong local academic community here in Manchester.

Sheona Southern, Managing Director at Marketing Manchester, said: “We are pleased our partnership with Manchester Central has resulted in a successful bid to host the European Hernia Society, and we look forward to welcoming esteemed delegates from around the world in 2022.

“Manchester’s proud history of healthcare innovation, combined with world-class facilities and a fantastic tourism and culture offer allows us to attract the world’s leading scientific minds to meet in our city and discuss advancements in their field.”

The decision to bring the event to Manchester Central sees the venue further cement itself as the venue of choice for international medical associations. In coming years, the venue will also play host to congresses such as the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group, in collaboration with The Christie, and the European Resuscitation Council in October 2020.

Shaun Hinds, CEO of Manchester Central, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the European Hernia Society to our venue. Manchester has a rich history in medical research which, combined with our reputation for delivering outstanding events, makes us the perfect choice to host the event. We’re looking forward to showcasing our venue, and indeed our city, to our international visitors”.
