The Belmont Stakes is the third and final race of the Triple Crown, which also includes the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.
The final leg of the Triple Crown – post time is 7:02 p.m. – anchors a Belmont Park card that includes six Grade 1 races.
So while there’s no Triple Crown hanging in the balance, one of the best days in U.S. racing is on tap, with a chance to add clarity several different divisions beyond the 3-year-olds.
Heading into the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes on Saturday, the racing has become almost an afterthought as the public has focused on a recent spike in deaths of horses at racetracks and air quality problems in the northeast caused by wildfires in Canada. And there is no Secretariat on the scene to make everyone forget the issues.
This is a tough horse to figure. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby after wins in the Arkansas Derby and the Risen Star at Fair Grounds. The connections have added blinkers although there is nothing to indicate that they would help his performance.
He’s Pennsylvania bred and if he wins he will be the first one since 1891 when Foxford won it. The distance and the layoff, five weeks between the Derby and Belmont, may not act as positives when you look at this horse. He’s got a shot, but not a very big one.
It’s an extra special edition of the race this year, with 2023 marking the 50th anniversary of Secretariat’s historic triumph in the race. That race saw ‘Big Red’ set a track record time of 2:24 – a world record on dirt which still stands to this day.
Unfortunately, there will be no Triple Crown winner in 2023 after Mage won the Kentucky Derby and National Treasure won the Preakness Stakes. However, National Treasure is running in the Belmont and has a chance to win two jewels in the Triple Crown. One of the biggest storylines is the return of Forte.
Forte, the early Kentucky Derby favorite until he was forced to withdraw, enters the Belmont with the best odds, while Tapit Trice and Angel of Empire are close behind.
National Treasure, meanwhile, is looking to come away with wins in two of the three Triple Crown races after winning the Preakness in May.
Nicknamed the Run for the Carnations, the Belmont Stakes is run by 3-year-old thoroughbreds at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The distance is 1.5 miles (2,400 meters). Secretariat, who won the race and the Triple Crown in 1973, still holds the track record of 2:24 minutes.
